There comes a time when you have to make a decision about youth if they've made it or not, you can't keep people on the books forever regardlessparticularly in league 1, at the same time its worrying how few do actually make it big, and the fact that we don't have a competitve reserve team that might have helped them transition
Grant hasn't actually signed for anyone at all yet. He's still a free agent and unattached.
In the 2 friendlies so far played, Basey played as much as anyone else, including skippering the side for a period.
If he wasn't rated by Parky at all, he wouldn't have got game time, let alone the captain's armband.
Anyway, if Basey's grandpappy was right, £800k was all that was offered.
But that's still £41,600 basic ....for any 21 year old, that's fantastic money!
And for a young unproven footballer at a League One club, it keeps him in the frame - and for an adaptable player like Grant, the opportunity is always going to be there when the inevitable injuries and suspensions kick in.
BTW that £41,600 p.a. is before any appearance money, bonuses, etc kick in.
Still very decent for the level we're at.
Grant himself said on Choice's excellent video interview recently that he'd had 6 different offers.
Doesn't an ambitious 21 year old eager to establish himself in the game, owe it to himself to go and explore those opportunities?
I know if I were in his shoes, I'd do the same.
Even if he does comes back and signs a new contract here, he'll know he at least had a look around for himself.
Agree I can't blame him for considering other opportunities. Can potentially get better money, a longer contract and in Scotland maybe even European football. He's already had 3 years as a pro but there are still better players ahead of him in every position. He could stay here, start as a squad player and hope he become a regular, while Aberdeen are at least one club that needs a player in the positions he plays.
I would be surprised if Aberdeen sign him as he is our 3rd choice left back. Good luck to him if he goes. The +£42k deal is interesting because I think it is where all the clubs will be going. We will have to play considerably more to sign a quality Bosman, like Bauzy but the riff raff will be lucky to get £50k. Football is waking up. Wonder what Macca got?
Just been on Aberdeen's site and Grant played in the second half of a 3-1 defeat to Fraserborough .They have another game tomorrow at Peterhead and all the trialists will also play at Dunfermline on Wednesday. The other Left back on trial Robbie Williams is described as 'catching the eye'.
[cite]Posted By: Danny Addick[/cite]He earns getting on for double what I do as a teacher to sit on the bench? Sounds good to me.
[cite]Posted By: Oggy Red[/cite]Even "average" Leage One and Two players on around £50k (no doubt bonuses to be added), is around double the national average wage.
And what does your average 21 year old earn in the real world ......?
Not many on £50k a year, I bet.
Agreed on both counts BUT he may only have a career lasting a dozen years. That window of opportunity then closes and he has to find something else. Some do not and the gulf between the likes of say Rooney (who will never have to work again) and Basey is massive. And that assumes that Basey is able to stay in football 'til normal retirement age and as we know many don't and have nothing to fall back on.
In fact, a 21 year old graduate with a first class degree can, in his first year in the City as a trainee Fund Manager earn more than that and has a longer career (and vastly more) than a lower League footballer. Let's also not forget that Basey would have been serving his apprenticeship for anything up to 12 years. He would have had as many lows as highs getting there too.
As comparisons we are talking about 21 year olds here, rather than say a 27 year old in his footballing prime.
Anyway a player like Basey may eventually find a 'best' position, focus on that and establish a regular place in a side ....... straightaway, once his worth to his club is proven, he becomes more valuable - this could earn him a much improved contract at his existing club........ or sold to another club, with a good signing on fee and decent contract.
Bottom line, in a couple of seasons as say a 23 year old, he could be earning very well - and by the time he is 27, could be skippering a championship team and being paid what that club consider he is worth.
Hopefully steering clear of serious injury, the rest is down to the player's performances.
There's been a handful of footballers with a degree - but it's not common, and obviously young pro footballers are focused on making it in the game. I can't imagine many would have wanted to go to uni had they not chosen football .....and not many of even those would have been awarded a 1st class degree at 21, more likely a 2-1, or 2-2 pro-rata across all graduates.
[cite]Posted By: Addick Addict[/cite]Agreed on both counts BUT he may only have a career lasting a dozen years. That window of opportunity then closes and he has to find something else.
Easy to forget that. And there's always the possibility of an injury that ruins their career at any time.
To be fair if RW is Basey's competition, I don't think he'll be getting a contract up there, I'm afraid Williams is just a cut above and a lot more experienced
I really felt Basey was a nervous player who struggled last year. Always outpaced and slipping over when he cleared the ball... Bring back Borrowdale please... much more agile and versatile. Basey would be better suited to rugby...

I take it Basey doesn't figure in your fantastic 11 ......?
i like basey as a player and still hope he signs if we can afford him. If the smaller contract story is true then thats the reality of club right now. Other good people got made redundent.
I spoke to his dad on the former players golf day, he said Inverness were interested in him but he wouldnt move up there, because he is a bit of a mummys boy and would miss home too much, I know he wants to stay at Charlton but I suppose its down to the club weather we want him or not.
We currently only have 3 centre-backs and I doubt Fortune is likely to sign (it would mean Dailly on the bench) so why isn't Basey being signed as cover here? He has no less pace than the existing three and has the addition of "potential". I think he would be a big loss and will go on to have a decent career.
Well it sounds like he did get an offer (the rumour of £800 a week), just not a very good one. We probably can't afford much on a 4th choice centre back and 2nd or even 3rd choice left back.

to be fair, i would say that about right for a young back-up player for a league one side; over £40k a year, plus there would probably be bonuses as well - which would probably take it up to at least 50k.

Has anybody told him that Aberdeen is just as far !

But of course, Jackson now falls into that category.

An example of someone who combined both would be David Campbell footballer/businessman
There aren't many David Campbell's around though.

Anyway, interesting debate AA.
He wouldn't be a first choice in any position.
Like a lot of players in the squad, I'm not sure his fitness was good enough to last a whole game.
If he can find a club, good luck to him.
I take it Basey doesn't figure in your fantastic 11 ......?
If he doesnt sign then wish him good luck.
GRANT Basey is spending a week on trial at Aberdeen after he grew tired of waiting for a contract offer from Charlton.
The Addicks do not want to renew the 21-year-old’s deal on its existing terms, as they look to slash their budget.
However, they might be prepared to extend his stay at The Valley, but it would mean the defender taking a significant pay cut.
