  • we cant play any worse, only one goal to get back even and then who can tell.
  • Not an awful result. Don't know how they missed that sitter at the end, but we had a fair few sitters in the second half (Burton missing the header springs to mind). Needed Reid in that second half, and Akpo should've come on earlier. Although I usually rate Mooney he didn't show up today really, him and Burton didn't seem to have an impact for much of the game. We bossed the large part of the second half though, and we should do well at the Valley. Just gutted about their second - how we only had one player back was ridiculous! Top finish from Ward though.
  • Second goal was inexcusible. 2 on 1 from our set play with 120mins left in the tie. Shameful defending.

I agree. Whatever defender was standing in front of him just let him have as much space as he wanted as he lined it up. As soon as he got the ball the defender should've been coming out because the only danger was the player gettnig a shot in. Ward had enough time to pick his spot, have a cup of tea, and then come back and hit it. Was terrible defending.

Still think we can do it at the Valley. This team has let us down enough times this season. They owe us big.
  • I would have been much happier with a draw - can we score two goals??

Mooney had a very poor game today and I agree that Sodje should have come on earlier. Also thought Sam was pretty disappointing. Some great saves by Randolph and a great block by Sodje and a little bit of luck have kept us in the tie. We had a lot of the ball but didn't create much. Worringly, we were conceding a lot of space in the defensive areas.

I didn't think Swindon looked great but we allowed them way too much room and I'm now 50/50 about whether we'll go to the finals. Need to hold the ball much better, close down better and please, do somethign with our set pieces! We had about 12 corners I think - none of which seemed to create anything of note and this has been a theme for most of the season

Agreed. Thought Racon should have just chopped Austin down before he broke away from our half. Would have been worth a yellow.
  • I really don't know what to make of Monday. Sometimes I think it's not a terrible result so far, but then I think it's an uphill battle.

In truth, my head tells me another year in League 1 is upon us.
  • Watching from the Valley lounge,I thought that we had the best of the game except that we made some awful mistakes, the first goal not closing down the winger on the left, allowing him to cross and Borrowdale did not even get off the ground, then the 2nd goal we should have hacked the player down and taken the booking. Apart from hitting the woodwork, i thought Bailey was poor, where as most of the rest of the team were just average. Special mention for Randolph my man of the match and who made some brilliant saves.

Its not impossible to get to Wembley but the have to play like they did at the Valley before Sodje and Burton got sent off and of course score at least two goals
  • I have said for a while, go into the 2nd leg losing i would prefer, had we been winning we would of been inviting the pressure, we need to come out all guns blazing on monday, early goal and we will be fine, although i am expecting a high scoring game, just don't start bloody Mooney!!!!!
  • Just noticed you have a post match thread!

So what did you guys think of the game? Any of our lads impress?

  • Can you imagine a situation where you brought in a full back on loan and he was given responsibility for taking free kicks outside the area and that the full back had a free kick at the end of a vital 1st leg of a semi final play off game and he had never scored a senior goal. What would you expect to happen, a goal? a saved shot or as happened tonight at Swindon and the ball went both well high and well wide.

Why does Borrowdale have the opportunity to take free kicks in a goal scoring position, when he has no record of scoring?

  • Juts can't play on tele.

Swindon's counter attack is dangerous but apart from that we were comfortable 2nd half. Didn't want more than a 1 goal defeat, will just about take that.
  • League One play-off semis 4th vs 5th 2006-2008

2008 - Leeds lost first leg but won second leg to go on to Wembley

No, not really, it just goes to prove that if you give anybody time and space they'll ring your nuts for you.

BTW, what is the prob with Paynter?
What are your views on the game?
  • Nah STFC_Bloke....Ward was quality!Hes much bigger than i thought he was and quite strong. Apart from that i dont think you look all that dangerous, our problem is, we dont either. Although, two of your lot said while walking back to the car that they were very pleased with 2-1 and said that was the best away performance they had seen at the CG.
  • Can I just add, what a shitty little away end that was, although we sold out there were loads of free seats near where we were and it was so difficult to generate an atmosphere, your lot made some noise and it would have been good banter if you had been able to hear us singing back at ya.Those stupid clappers were doing my nut though.
  • Ive heard that Painter is definately out for monday but if we defend like we did tonight Harold Pinter could score against us on Monday.
I thought Racon and Mooney were appalling and i hope that we drop both , puting Bailey back where he belongs in center midfield and puting Ried on the left wing. Forster in for Mooney also.
We HAVE to go for broke from the start and play two proper wingers but i suspect that Parkinson will continue with Bailey on the flanks which will result in another season in league one.
    ALTOGETHER - ATTACK , ATTACK , ATTACK.

Just wrote same exact thing on me blog.

And Borrowdale taking free-kicks.. really? who decides this sort of thing.

cafc_se7: There looked a lot of empty seats both behind the goal and at side!
  • Well for the people that didnt get a ticket, you didnt miss alot. Was a terrible atmo in that roofless away end. Swindon wont know whats hit them monday night, we will lift the roof off!

  • There was a lot of empty seats because a lot were standing in the central walkway.
  • good to meet you AFKA mate, great atmo in the pub
  • Would like to see Forster start on Monday, we need goals in the first 60 minutes not the last 30. Have to sort out the defending at the back, they owned us aerially & if it wasn't for Randolph they could have had 4 or 5, mind you we missed a few gilt edged chances ourselves.

I woudl also like to see Reid on the left at some stage. Bailey played well there this evening but having to continually cut back onto his right kills pretty much any advantage we have over there.

Very optimistic - early goal & we'll slaughter them :-)

(hope someone has reunited all the 97/98 heroes for a pre-match morale booster)
  • I thought it was a quaint little ground, like going back in time. Enjoyed the atmosphere.
There could have been a number of results. We finished the 1st half strongly and were much better in the 2nd and really dominated play while they were scoring their goals strangely. Funny ending too with them pushing for another goal and us with our backs to the wall, it was like us were hanging onto a 1 goal lead and they were looking for a late equaliser, it should have been the other way round!
All is not lost and I see no reason why won't go through, apart from the lack of goals we score! It'll probably be a real thriller on Monday, 3-2 on the night, 4-4 AET and then Pens.......
Tough journey there. Left Eltham at 3.30 and got there at 6.30, loads of traffic and roadworks. Parking was easy in Multi and only £1.80 Hardly any traffic going back, was at Chelsea embankment by 11.15 having left Swindon at 10pm. Took nearly as long to do the last 10 miles or so as usual.
  • gotta say, i come out the ground thinkin we got away with blue murder, but now im thinkin how the hell are we going to score two goals.Where they comin from ? We just dont have any cutting edge.

    Yep.
  • firstly how the fuk are we still in this tie

2ndly how the fuk are we stil in this tie

and lastly Please for gods sake parky start with Forster, putr bailey in the middle put Kyle Reid out Left kick Sam in the arse and tell him to get some rest he is a professional footballer who is running on empty after 20mins doin eff all, sort the defence out tell your midfielders to never let a player run that far without a challenge and do not ever ever ever sign pericard

i was well pissed off at 2 nil we come back into it we could have lost 5 -1 or won 3-2 we can not play that shite again, Swindons ground is a shite hole and there is no room at charlton for 1970's racist shite
  • growl
  • also apologies to the lady who wanted 4 guiness and nathan got her 4 fosters if you are on here!

Weve got a good chance monday, Mooney just cant play again, he was terrible as per usual
  • mooney fell over more often than kim grant saying that though he was not as bad as some made out his movement is good but his control and decision making physical strengh is very very poor at times and i can see why he frustrates, but in the 1st leg of a playoff semi is not the time to boo him
