Swindon fan here...

edited May 2010 in General Charlton
Hi there, Swindon fan here in peace.

I've been reading this forum for a few days now and see alot of you keep asking if Swindon have a forum. Well we do, it's called http://thetownend.com

Also, I see Rockin_Robin said that you'd be ok to drink in The Merlin as long as you don't wear colours. Ignore this, The Merlin is a friendly pub and always has away fans in (apart from when we play Bristol Rovers!)

  • STFC - what's the name of a pretty big boozer with a large beer garden on the corner of a road, about 10 min walk the ground, had to cut through a park or something. Drank there last game of the season the other year, doing my head in trying to remember what is is! The Merlin rings a bell, but I'm sure that wasn't it!
  • Sparrows Lane Lion, could be The Bulldog??

If you could explain which way you went?

    Cheers North London Addick!

Ignore him STFC, he's Millwall ;-)

Lol, you could be right with the "Iron" bit, maybe he gets on the Pink Lions site as well.
  • It was certainly a culture shock visiting The Den on saturday!

The boozers down Old Kent Road and Ilderton Road leading to the ground look pretty fearsome! lol

posts like that and you will be ok here
  • Yeah - the broadband connectivity in those pubs is pretty rough. They struggle to get onto Charlton Life in there !
  • Oi, leave it out you two little robins.

STFC - can't recall where we came from, we landed very early, walked around for ages, was the first ones in this pub, just remember had a very large area out the back, was on the corner of a minor road meeting a larger one, come out turn left and that's the direction of the ground. Been looking at google maps and can't place it.

It doesn't matter, just doing my head in!

Was you on a coach brought in that way then? From Blackheath or straight from Swindon?
  • Sparrow

    whats your feelings then

who will it be playing who at wembleyhonestly

i reckon that it will be the winner of us vs the winner of your game.

    only joking

charlton vs huddersfield final i reckon

or swindon vs millwall i cant see us meeting at all
  • Not as much as you are doing my head in
  • Yep I was on 1 of those 13 coaches!

We came up the A2 (Rochester Way) and the Old Bill stopped all our coaches just off Shooters Hill Road and then escorted us in.

lol they did the same to charlton coaches ...intended as an escort ... and then the escort proceeded to lose touch with the coaches at each of the traffic lights ... coaches all arrived separately
  • How far is it from The Valley to The Den? 6 miles?

not sure what you are getting at but some fans have no choice but to go by coach
  • NLA - I'd rather it was us v Swindon in the final....as much as I'd love to beat you lot in the final, the embarrassment of losing to you lot would be too much. Next door neighbours would give me too much stick. Can't have that!

I really can't call who is going through, 2 very evenly balanced games I think, I've said elsewhere that you've got the edge in your game and that us & Hudds are very finely balanced, I think we can afford to lose by one goal away at Hudds, but I don't think you can afford to lose this Friday, but I think you'll get the draw.

STFC - they didn't take you to any boozers beforehand? The OKR has died on it's arse long before my time. Still plenty of pubs but yes, probably not the most cosy or comfortable of boozers!

I wasn't getting at anything! Just interested how far it is! I wouldn't drive to The Den thats for bloody sure!

Sparrows Lane Lion, no the OB didn't take us to any pubs. Straight to the ground where we had dry, cold burgers and Carlsberg priced at £3.50 a bottle! (suspose thats London prices though) lol

Rockin Robin, it's not like going to other grounds. Would you drive to The Den?! Charlton are local rivals too and I can imagine it's quite a hostile game.

Coach is probably the safest way to travel for most fans with kids etc.

Spot on. I got the train and I can only comment on the carriage I was in but was pretty intimidating and hostile. Especially when four lads got on in their Charlton shirts ha. Not that I would get it, but the coach is most certainly the safest way.

Plus if you live in Kent, coach was probably cheaper than the trains and dropped you straight at the stadium and back to your doorstep. Easy.
  • Doubt if any set off from The Valley & I doubt if we had more coaches than usual for a home game travelling from Kent etc - we got the train from London Bridge to South Bermondsey.
  • True, saw your coaches go past after, think about 6-10 in total, so I'd assume all from Kent way etc.

Craig what happened to the 4 lads in their Charlton shirts? Anything?
  • Wish I'd gone by coach.
I live within a mile of the Valley and trained it via London Bridge.
Unfortunately, stopping for a few beers meant we arrived halfway through the first half.
So, the nearest possible away game and we got there late.

Nah, they were singing "Bermondsey is full of s***" - didn't go down too well! ha. I think they were saved by the short journey, but a couple of guys at the end of the carriage didnt look too happy about it all. Tbh on the trains, as long as you're sensible you'll be fine, thought they were toeing the line a bit there though!
  • Was pleasantly surprised to make the short trip down to the ground bouncing around a full carriage of Charlton causing a racket... I think that covers all of the good bits of that day quite succinctly!
  • So it shouldn't have been too hostile or intimidating...my point is people weren't torn limb from limb like a lot of people seem to assume happens.

That's the point, as long as you ain't walking around being lairy or mouthy then you're highly unlikely to encounter any trouble. (surprised they didn't get a cheeky slap though from some other shirters!!)

Some people wearing colours may get some abuse, but I've seen some of our fans get that at away games too, trick is to be sensible or just not wear colours and 9 times out of 10 you'll be absolutely fine. Which is why I don't get STFC bloke saying he wouldn't drive to Millwall, wouldn't be a big deal.

Bet they quietened down when they stepped off the train though.... ;-)
  • Got the train to south bermondsey full of em it was. Bit of banter with a woman in a charlton shirt and a drunk old man got on and started singing a couple of charlton songs but nothing that everybody didnt laugh at.
  • I went by train and I didn't kill any Millwall fans, so I reckon it is safe!
