The best hope for us and Leeds might be to meet each other in the play-off finals - I reckon the fear of failure at Wembley could be too much for either team when playing against a team unencumbered by such worries.
I think Leeds are the only team we could beat on current form, so we're unlikely to get to the final unless we play them in the semi.
Still, we've got to finish 6th yet and with 3 tricky away fixture out of the next 4 games, it's looking increasingly unlikely. As someone else said, we could be 7th after the next 2 games with Southampton, Leeds, Colchester and Norwich still to play in our last 7 games.
[cite]Posted By: floydandharvey[/cite] Having said that, the table of performances against top half teams Sky showed before the game last night was hardly enouraging towards our play-off chances: We were 9th
Our away form against other top half sides is shocking. Draws at Norwich, Leeds, Swindon and Walsall and lost at Millwall, Colchester, Carlisle and Bristol rovers. 4 points from 24 available!

Looking at your team, with the likes of Burton, Dailly etc, you'd almost be better off clearing the dead wood, the prima donnas, the players who ain't pulling their weight,
Scoham - from what I've seen of Dailly (which is less than you have) he looks shot. I thought he was finished years ago when he was at west ham to be honest! He didn't look like much of a leader either, and if you're going to have a wise old head at the back, a battling, heart on their sleave, tough tackling and inspiring centre back is needed. OR, a young player coming through who has Charlton in his blood and gives it his all.
You usually have a great youth system, put faith in them next season to form the spine of a team, players fighting to prove themselves, showing effort, something for you lot to relate to, let the team spirit build from there and the rest follows.
Dailly has been poor for a while but at the start of the season he was very reliable. He doesn't look good in the air or particularly strong, perhaps teams have realised that. And of course he's not quick either. I'd worry if we played Sodje and Llera together, though maybe that wouldn't be any worse than a struggling Dailly alongside one of them considering our performances. Dailly certainly isn't a tough tackling defender, he has a decent football brain but probably not enough to deal with powerful strikers who know how to play against him.
The youth players will play their part, there's some decent players there, but no one I'm convinced is good enough to be a regular in a side going for promotion unfortunately. We'll be in trouble if we have to throw 3/4 of them in, I guess it would be a bit similar to Southampton last season, they just wouldn't be quite good enough. Just effort and team spirit isn't enough, we have players trying at the moment but we're lacking certain types of players in a few positions.
Dailly is 36, he probably wasn't meant to be playing every single game but due to the lack of defensive cover, the unreliabilty of Llera and the recklessness of Sodje, he's had to play almost every game. It's no surprise he looks knackered.

Why are you worried about coming down SMS? All Charlton have to do is stop us from giving the ball to Puncheon, this will stop us playing our football and we will resort to hoof ball instead. Sticking a big man on Lambert might be a good idea aswell.

Like most teams we've played this year Saints fan, you will be surprised how inept we are at the simplest of tasks.

I think inept is a good word, AshTray. We are in an inept division. Leeds were pretty inept last night and have been for some time, according to many of their fans.
Swindon were inept when they were playing at the Valley against nine men. MK Dons were hopelessly inept against us.
Huddersfield were good at the Valley but are clearly inconsistent.
Colchester demolished us at their place but have been demolished themselves a few times.
And all of the top teams have at times struggled against the division's stragglers.
It's an utterly inept division, full of inept teams playing inept football.
So maybe we're all just looking at it through the wrong end of the telescope. Instead of booing the lack of great football, we should be satisfied that sometimes we're less inept than the opposition.
Even when we've won this season, we've often been disgruntled because the footall is inept.
But I remember something Curbs said when we were a mid-table premiership side and the fans were getting restless because we weren't ''pushing on''.
He pointed out that thanks to Sky, fans were watching Barcelona v Inter in the champions league every other week - then they'd turned up at the Valley on a Sat afternoon for Charlton v Bolton or Fulham , and get pissed off because they didn't see the same quality.
Multiply that gulf in quality a hundred-fold, and you begin to understand how - even though ''we're still fourth'' - there is so much disaffection around our performances this season...
