Not a 'latest film,' quite the opposite actually, but not sure it merits a thread to itself.
Last night 'Talking Pictures' showed 'Poor Cow' which was Ken (or Kenneth as he was credited in that film) Loach's first film to reach real public exposure.
It stars the late Carol White (arguably best known for Cathy Comes Home) and, despite having seen the film before albeit a long time ago, I had forgotten just how good and photogenic an actress she was.
A very underrated performer, probably because she suffered from her own demons and made so few films, who was both 'eye candy,' as was de rigueur in the sixties, and very talented.
Remember her in Dulcima....a comely scheming wench playing opposite John Mills....good performances. Youtube attached for the younger amongst us.
I'm off to Toronto for work for the Film Festival.
The remake of my favourite movie of all time, Papillon is premiering.
I'm preparing myself to be appalled...
I didnt know they we're remaking Papillon. It's one of my favourites of all time too - Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman are fantastic in it. I must have seen it a dozen times .
* just looked it up on IMDB and saw that it is Charlie Hunnam starring in it. My heart sank .
Oh my god I tried watching Pacific Rim again yesterday... the man is an absolute personality vacuum. He's like the lovechild of Jai Courtney and Sam Worthington.
Also, super-jealous of your trip, @supaclive. Hope it goes well!
Saw A Ghost Story last week. I loved it and found it intriguing, unusual and very moving. The person I went with thought it was boring, pretentious rubbish.
The Dark Tower - Oh sweet lord. There was such a fuss about turning this into an HBO series or a movie, it took years and years, multiple people attached to the project... and in the end someone has churned out a generic action movie with about 10% of the novel's plot points.
I don't really like comparing films to books, they are different mediums. But in terms of how they adapted an incredibly interesting and brilliantly fleshed-out world, the makers of TDT done fucked up bad. It's a mildly distracting fantasy thing with decent effects and good cast, but not remotely close to the wonder and magic of the story told in the book.
2/5
American Made - Thoroughly enjoyed it, but it is quite flawed in terms of pacing and characterisation (not sure anyone has a character arc in this thing). I love watching Cruise movies, and he delivers. It zips along mostly, has a sag in the middle. If you like NARCOS you will appreciate seeing some of the story from another character's perspective, although you'd need to see NARCOS to understand exactly what Barry Seal was involved with. Has some great set-pieces and is charming enough to see it through. The funny thing is, there's absolutey zero tension, which is some feat considering how every other coke-smuggling movie or TV show I have ever seen was the opposite.
I went to see Dunkirk last Saturday, finally... Actually it was the second day of the release here in China. After reading some of the posts on this thread I lowered my expectations a bit and quite enjoyed the film. It is definitely not your usual war film. Not one German soldier appears. Not many dialogues. Tensions and fear are shown through facial expressions of the English soldiers and officers. I like the structure ie three stories told on different time scales. I think it has become a trademark of Nolan's works, giving the audience a sort of messed up sense of the time. Inception and Following are still my top two favourites Nolan films but this one is probably my third favourite now, before Memento.
Since there were a few (funny) arguments on Harry Styles... I must say he did an okay job - before seeing the film I only knew there was a member of One Direction in the cast. I couldn't tell which one was him, neither did I care because each of the young actors gave a fine performance.

I think Dark Tower would be much more suited to a long tv series as opposed to a film. There was 7 books for gawd sakes and ill be honest I felt the story was to rushed so to fit it all into a film (I know its technically a sequel). ive not seen it yet so still live in hope

It was ripe for an HBO series, and frankly still is considering the movie doesn't spoil the book at all. I don't know why so many producers found adapting the books daunting, but whatever the reason is, it's holding the story back.
Again, not new, but I have in the last week caught The Fisher King, The Big Lebowski and a bit further back Hell or High Water. All three brilliant films, but I find myself also impressed by Jeff Bridges. When I was much younger, he seemed like the sort of actor basically stuck in to keep a Young female audience in the cinema, but man he is a seriously good actor.

Those are three excellent roles for him. Although in his later years he's done the gruff Texan/ cowboy thing a few times! Crazy Heart, Hell Or High Water, RIPD, True Grit, Seventh Son...

Last I read they were going to do a series with Idris Elba narrating featuring Rolands adventures as a young gun slinger. Anyway im off to see another Stephen King adapation this week, ive read nothing but good things so lets see
So here's some recent films and my marks out of ten.
Hacksaw Ridge 7.5/10 Arrival 7/10 Hell or High Water 8/10 Come and find me 7.5/10 Sully 7.5/10 Jack Reacher 5/10 A Monster Calls 5/10 The Book of Love 4/10 Fantastic Beasts 7/10 The Accountant 7.5/10 Deepwater Horizon 8/10 Captain Fantastic 7.5/10 Disappointments Room 5/10 Magnificent Seven 6/10 Inferno 5/10 Snowden 7.5/10 Mechanic Resurrection 7/10 Free State of Jones 8.5/10 War Dogs 7.5/10 Miss Peregrines home for Peculiar Children 7/10 That's all I can think of for now...too many stinkers to list.
IT was great, one of my favourites as a teenager, however, one of the worst endings for such a great film IMO. Hope the new one thinks of a better ending.

Read the other day that Tim Curry was very unhappy regarding the end of his film. I agree with you though.

English grandmother turns up and the legal battle for who/what is best for the girl takes place, then the fallout afterwards.
Some funny moments and some sad/dramatic ones too but a really good watch.

Not new, but enjoyable if a little sad of an ending.
7.5 out of 10.
Looking forward to IT too. Loved the series even though as a coulrophobic it also horrifed me.
Are you a projectionist by any chance ? Planning to see it next Weds & really looking forward to it.
Couldn't face The Dark Tower knowing it 'd be a total nightmeire after reading the fantastic books a few years ago.
Just currently reading the Novel and its fair to say the Tim Curry version was watered down in comparison.
Critical reviews are good as well so looking forward to it even more now!
Hope the new one thinks of a better ending.
