Just watched it, slow paced but absorbing.
The 2 leads Malik and Crowe are at the top of their game.

Me too. Absorbing is a good description. Very much enjoyed it.
Not his fault, but I find Rami Malek a bit irritating. Not sure why.

Just watched the new film "Eternity" ( had free preview tickets).

Didn't think it would be my thing, but my Wife (who is my film polar opposite) and I both thought it was a lovely film. Worth a watch.

    I've seen a few recently:

Bugonia - 5/10: a good cast and mildly entertaining in places, but I found it all a bit silly.

Palestine 36 - 7/10: a historical drama based on events leading up to the Arab Revolt of 1936 against British colonial rule in Palestine, at a time when land was being increasingly passed to, or seized by, Jewish settlers. The film utilises a mix of dramatised fictional characters and real archival footage. A solid and interesting film, although the portrayal of the British felt a little cartoonish at times.

Die My Love - 4/10: I really could not get on with this film. A good cast but I found it totally one-dimensional and could not see the point of it.
  • Really enjoyed the Running Man even though I find Glenn Powell a little irritating for some reason.

Always felt the original was ready made for a remake. I actually think the remake is better and worth a watch if you can handle the whole 'Hunger Games/Battle Royale' genre that seems to still have legs.

The latest ‘Knives Out’ on Netflix is decent. Best of the three.
  • Avatar Fire & Ash. Still an incredible technical achievement as the effects are flawless but if you've see Way of Water then you've pretty much seen this latest one. It's 95% the same film.

Worth watching but I thought it was the weakest.

I'd put it above the 2nd but below the 1st, though I like all 3. Opinions, hey!

Thought the second was shocking. First one wasn’t bad.
  • Just watched The Ballad of Wallis Island - a nice story / gentle film.
  • Avatar III was interminable. It's a rehash of II and this time I just desperately wanted it to end,,,,it just wouldn't though. Felt like torture staying to the end. The final set piece alone seemed to have about 50 twists and turns but each one became less interesting and fraught than the last one. I'm done with the franchise now (and I enjoyed the first two installments).

I think that's my favourite film of the year.

Really enjoyed Knives Out 3, although I thought Benoit Blanc was a little in the dark a bit too much. Literally at times!

Nuremburg is heavy handed popcorn fare with some maddeningly lazy storytelling and blindingly obvious plot beats that asks literally nothing of the audience. Which makes it entirely watchable, but really disappointing to me.

Crowe does a good job but it would be far more compelling to watch unknowns in the roles. The psychiatrist's character arc really irritated me (possibly inevitably given that Rami Malek was involved). I don't think hanging the story on him was the best way in, even if the book and his real life role (which I gather was nothing like the movie )sounds good in theory.

As for the courtroom stuff, I'd love to cross-reference it with the real thing because the climax was so one dimensional and derivative I can only assume that's how it happened, because it was too hammy to write it that way.

The most important thing about it - and this was a heavy handed as the rest - is the reminder that this stuff will never go away and must be confronted. The script should, in my opinion, have focussed on that far more and spent less time establishing that the shrink was an idiot (I think unintentionally), and an utterly unrealistic blank slate designed entirely to give the audience a way in. I don't think we needed to be treated like idiots. If the writer/ director trusted the audience more this might have been the film that the true story deserves.

Yes think so but it wasn’t much - about £3?

Amazon is a subscription service with a certain number of movies and TV shows available to them.

If they don’t own the subscription rights to a film or show they can only sell or rent it. It’s the same with Sky, but not Netflix or Disney because they don’t bother selling stuff that they don’t have on subscription.
  • Marty Supreme is well a Supremely good film, its flawed so not quite 5* as most  reviews have it, but a most enjoyable film indeed great story and brilliant acted, Paltrow is VG & TC gives a nailed on Oscar performance. Went on NYE to Ritzy Brixton perfect way to end 2025 & look fwd to 2026 seeing a VG film in an iconic cinema on the big screen
This year cinema will continue to be challenged by streamers, for all obvious reasons the sheer variety one can access at home is great, but nothing beats being in the dark for a couple of hrs and losing oneself in the magic of cinema.

No wonder Tyreece looks knackered at times if he’s moonlighting like this.

Couple of friends have seen the preview of 28 Years Later, the Bone Temple, and says it’s utterly insane, Fiennes and O’Connell are just brilliant. Tickets booked for a couple of weeks time

Went to the cinema last night to see Marty Supreme but it was sold out (this is almost unheard of at the independent cinema we go to in Peckham!). Instead we went to see Sad Song Blue because it happened to be starting at the same time. Knew nothing about it in advance but it was enjoyable. Hugh Jackman & Kate Hudson are a Neil Diamond tribute act in working class Wisconsin who are so good they become local celebrities with trials a tribulations along the way. Pretty easy to watch and entertaining (with some tough moments thrown in).

When we got home we watched Train Dreams. Absolutely spectacular film about the life of an ordinary man, but it broke my heart into a thousand pieces.

I’m guessing it’s Peckham Plex you went to ? My daughter went to Ritzy Brixton last night screen 1 260+capacity was sold out ! Marty Supreme has got momentum & word of mouth positive vibe as it’s a cracking story & TC is great as is Paltrow, Oscars are being polished for this film. Well worth seeing it on big screen feels almost old school film, not perfecto but good 4*****
  • Saw Marty Supreme yesterday. Absolutely madcap, maybe plot is just a touch too wild but it makes for a fun watch. Agree that Chalamet (as always) and Paltrow are on top form.

Watched the Housemaid too. You'll lose brain cells watching this one. We know why Sydney Sweeney is cast in films, useless, two trick actress, both of which sit below her neckline.

Yeah the Peckhamplex. It’s old school and doesn’t have the mod-cons that you get elsewhere but at £6 a ticket with all the latest releases you can’t knock it.

I live the Ritzy though, a trip there with some Jamaican food after is a great night out!
  • Loved Marty Supreme - great film. Love the storyline and TC is brilliant in the main role.

Peckhamplex how they manage to keep prices so low is amazing it wasn’t long ago that it was £4.99 admission

Impressive how TC put in years of training to get to the level of ping pong playing required to play 1950’s leading world class table tennis player.

    https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-features/timothee-chalamet-marty-supreme-ping-pong-training-1236454197/

This role and playing Bob Dylan where he sang etc show remarkable dedication by TC, I think the academy will recognise this at the Oscars & TC will get Best Actor.

TC also raised the game for marketing Marty he comes over really well as a level headed young man, he invested some of his own money and it’s clearly paying off … I’m not surprised that Marty Supreme is filling out cinemas it’s perfect film to kick start off the year
