  • Jesus......were you lot never 17?

Come on give him a break.....he will settle down...

You could tell he was up for it before the game with the way he responded to the crowd.....top lad and Im sure Uncle and the rest of the family are justly proud, I know I would be.
  • Jonjo in that first half last night, reminded me of a certain young Charlton player of a similar age in the mid 90's.

Millwall away dec 95, ring any bells?

The only thing the ref got right was last night, was having a strong word with him after that rash challenge in the first minute. I'm sure he will learn from this.

Yeah imagine what Bowyer could have achieved if he wasn't a complete pikey off the pitch. This is why JonJo has much more chance of doing what Bowyer didn't do, it seems he's got the potential on the pitch but off the pitch it seems he's well grounded and up to now made good decisions.
  • Wouldn't worry Unc.People on here just like to moan for the sake of moaning.Think the majority on here will agree with you.Shelvey is at least showing some bollox and taking the game to the opposition, something we have not seen since Scotty Parkers days and a big reason for our excellent start.
Let's face it,pussy footing around is not going to get us out of this league and i think Jonjo is showing great maturity in realising that point.
  • Reminds me of when Rooney first came into the game at pretty much the same age. A fantastic talent that will hopefully flourish and mature as he gets older. I took one of my other sons (who is a gooner, but likes to watch us as well) his coment on Jonjo was ''good player but very greedy''!
  • jeez calm down uncle, people just don't want him gettin sent off in games where we're gonna need him. think it's as simple as that really.
  • Tbh Uncle I wouldn't listen to the few on here going on about now he needs to clam down...

I think the way he was the one player that was sung for more than once yesterday shows how much we all think of him and his attitude...

Unc, I think the overiding factor should be the number of people chanting his name, applauding his tackles and commitment throughout the game - not a few anonymous messages on a message board.

I think you'll find similar posts about Mr. Rooney on MUFC forums and comparing Jonjo to him is one of the best compliments the lad can get.

A player of his quality is always going to get the extreme views, whether completely glowing or picking up on little mistakes and getting slated for it. I'm afraid it is something that Jonjo and his family (you included!) are going to have to deal with. He is going to become star, of that i'm sure, and with that becomes greater scrutiny of all aspects of his play.

Personally, I don't want him changing other than pacing himself throughout a game so he is effective in the 85th minute as he is in the 5th.

  • Wouldn't worry what people say Uncle, think all players will get criticised at times by fans during their career and will take it with a pinch of salt, I think it's a compliment really, everyone seems to forget how early he is in his career, we already rely on him and expect him to have the head of a more senior pro. He was brilliant and showed an intensity that more senior players took longer to get to.
  • Great goal and great potential. As someone pointed out i would rather see that kind of comitment even if it results in the odd red card rather than players just there to pick up their wages and coast along in games.

He was up for it and thats what i want to see in every player in a charlton shirt.

Also we should be grateful that he has hung around and is comitted to us when he could quite easily have gone to a prem or at least a champ club and got regular football.
  • i did question the way he flies into challenges after the wycombe game.
on that occasion i gave hime the benefit of the doubt that it was frustration on his own performance that day, but did say that if he carried on, then an unwanted reputation with oppo players and officials could happen.

last night you couldn't put it down to his frustrations as it was so early in the game.
imo, would have had no complaints if either challenge was a straight red.
i would've been calling for that if an orient player had done that to him.

He's at least 2 years ahead of Parker who didn't have much impact until after his Norwich loan. Shelvey needs to keep putting his foot in which may well result in a red card or two, but that's how he'll best learn his timing. Just no silly or petulant bookings/sendings off - that's all I ask for.
  • shouldn't ave commented as i dont really care enough, i'll leave it to the regulars. we won, not bothered bout much else.

  • Just as an aside to the spazz saying he's shit and to sub him - if you are on here please stay quiet for a long time. Jonjo is the future of this club and I suspect will be representing his country in a few years so you really are clueless

Unc - I wasn't at the game so can't say but I have seen instances where Jonjo has displayed an "edge" to his game and I think it would take too much away from his game if he lost it. The comparisons with Rooney are spot on. Young, strong, aggressive and occasionally rash but the talent is more than evident! Tell him to carry on doing what he's doing as there is not a single Charlton fan who wants him playing anywhere else - unfortunately every club has dickhead fans and it seems one or two were in attendance last night
  • [cite]Posted By: uncle[/cite]Dont get me wrong i'm not angry i just wont let people write what they want and not be able to respond. I do know how much he is liked and so does he but that dont give people the right to write what they want with no reply... Lets face it how many of you read that and thought i wouldn't say anything ... Come on you know me better than that :-)

Uncle, did his dad sit in the away stand then? Blimey I thought they'd get comps in the main stand. Always going to be tough listening to some of the crap fans spout out about your son or family, I know from previous experience.

  • Like I said I think he'll be fine, it's not like he's a dirty player, far more about him being enthusiastic and wanting to get involved, which is what everyone wants to see. I don't think it's a criticism of him, just no one wants to see him sent off (can say a challenge isn't a red or a yellow, but a referee doesn't always agree) and banned for a few matches. We all want him to play and carry on improving as he has done.

  • I wasn't there so can't express a view one way or the other on either challenge.

However the games are recorded and they watch them in training. If either challenge was excessive then i'm sure Parky or Kinsella will have a quiet word with Jonjo.

The boy is 17 and learning his trade yet at the same time is an integral player in a team lacking depth in the squad. I think the realisation of how much we would miss him if he picked up a 3 match suspension for a straight red is influencing some of the opinions expressed on this thread.
  • Uncle , hold there fella. If he plays shit ill say so ( aint seen it yet mind), if people think thats bullshit they will say so ----------- its a fans forum.

Jonjo is the star of this team, if people cant see his ability then they have had to much beer pre match or been watching some 2bob out fit from poplar way ! The main thing for me was not him geting stuck in ( we have been far to soft for to long) but that tackle could have got a red and the elbow later maybe should have a got a red. Thank f**k for CAFC he didnt get a red card. If we lost Jon Jo last night we would probably have lost, if we lose him for 3 games we have a huge bent in the team. He needs to relax a tad (not in the Jerome Thomas, Marcus f**kin Bent way and hide) but not think he HAS to do everything. There are "water carriers" in every team , and Jon Jo dosnt have to do that job , plus defend, be our play maker, score goals, cut the oranges etc etc etc if he is being asked to do that then thats BS ------if he plays to his main strengths then the worlds his lobster ! and as for CAFC if we dont get up this year or the take over(yawn) dosnt happen then JonJo may well be the saviour of this football team in another way.

You have to realise that in every ground you will hear some strange and weird shit shouted ! like last year when the twonk behind me shouted out at Norwich fans "f**k off you welsh c***s !!

i cant wait till someone slags of Rob Elliot if front of his Dad. Now that will be a very short conversation indeed.

i saw the tackle and if you think that is a straight red then i know nothing about football.
Parkinson - "In the first half he was charging round and could have got sent off"

    Oops

That problem is of the boards own making.Shelvey is just playing his own game and in my opinion should not be restrained just because the board won't dip their toe in the transfer market for whatever reason.
  • yes i did see both challenges and imo i wouldn't have been surprised if either were interpreted by the ref as reds. not wanting to argue but that has nothing to do with your knowledge of football it's just a different opinion.

in relation to JBLOCKS observations regarding leaving it to the pros.

i didn't hear peacock, paddy or steve browns comments, but if their comments are as described earlier in the thread, then they are, albeit ex pro's that are more qualified to comment on it than me and 99% of all others on this forum.

  • Uncle...............I really rate Jonjo just like thousands of other Charlton fans but players do get sent off week in week out for the type of challenges Jonjo made last night. I don`t want him to change his game but I think in the second half when he was aware of an issue with the ref if he made another hard challenge he was a far better player for it. He came into his own and was very impressive.
  • agree totally uncle, if all the players in charlton shirts had the same level of commitment and work ethic as jonjo over these last few years, maybe we wouldnt be in this league.
  • I find it embarassing that Jonjo might read this thread, but then everyones entitled to thier opinions I guess.

IMO jonjo is an awesome player and i'm glad that happend to him last night as it made him let the football do the talking and must have matured him as a player.
