  • That is the issue Ali.... they did NOT score
  • [cite]Posted By: SaySomething[/cite]What if the likes of shelvey/racon/sam had played last night and picked up injuries making them doubtful for say, the next 2/3 league games? Having your strongest side available for the league is more important this season imo.
[cite]Posted By: Oggy Red[/cite]Shelvey and Sam were injured anyway.

So was Richardson, LLLLera and Dailly.

    Dicko was on international duty.

8 players came in to start. 2 players played in a different postion to where they play now.

I would expect the side that beat Wycombe to start on Saturday, if injuries permit.
You're right, Sam (knee or, technically put, patella) and Shelvey (heel), plus all the changes were mainly enforced and not by choice. Hopefully, these are just precautionary measures.
  • Cannot believe some of the reaction to this result.

Didn't go, but father-in-law, who is possibly the most critical fan ever to watch Charlton, did and his summary was pretty blunt.

Shite game, we were ok in the first half, not very good in the 2nd and the kids (understandably) ran out of legs in extra time.

This was a Charlton XI. Add that to our record in this competition and it doesn't take a genius to work out the end result.

A few have commented that this was a Hereford side that wasn't good enough to stay in the same division that we are in now, delve a little deeper and I think you'll find that 2-3 players remain from last season, new manager etc etc.

If we had gone there and played the same team as Saturday and all five of the injured players had broken down, Parkinson would have been hung-drawn & quartered. If he'd have played Racon & Bailey from the start and one of them had picked up an injury the same would have happened......"why are we playing our best players in meaningless competition etc etc".

All I know is, I'd much rather be out of this micky mouse cup and have a good chance of putting out the same side as last Saturday, than be "anticipating" the second round draw whilst thinking "bollocks, Stavros, Spring, Wagstaff etc etc are going to have to play at Hartlepool".
  • Well said Clem
  • For what it's worth these are my thoughts on the game:

Crap game and a very limp performance. We probably had marginally the better of it against a poor side but failed to take our chances

Solly, Basey and Stavrinou all had decent games. Stav is a steady holding mid, but he's no playmaker - looks decent cover for Semedo though. Solly got caught for pace a bit, but Basey seems to have got a bit leaner and quicker and swung in 2 or 3 peachey crosses.

Wagstaff tried very hard but produced very little.

Mcleod was lively but doesn't seem to have a clue what to do with the ball, crowd were getting on his back a bit before he went off.

Small started brightly but faded in the second half - looks a poor mans Jerome Thomas, lots of dribbling and direct running, no end product - Sam's a much better player on tonight's showing.

Gray was better than his sub appearance on Saturday but still not greatly involved and missed the pen and another couple of good headed chances.

The makeshift centre backs both made a couple of mistakes and Semedo got outpaced a couple of times, but they generally did okay (don't want to be relying on either for the League though).

Elliot MOM, good decision making, caught all his crosses and made 2 stunning saves.

    Spring was absolutely bleedin' awful.

Subs couldn't really change it but all did better than the people they replaced. Fleets was better than Mcleod but still nowhere near good enough imo.

Very young and makeshift side so not reading too much into the quality of the performance. Most worrying is that there wasn't more urgency about trying to get the equaliser and that it was the youngsters who had the best games - none of the more senior players really tried to drive us forward. The movement up front was also non existent.

Interesting and good to see Parky laying into them at the end of normal time and before extra time - not that it made much difference.

    Elliot - 9
    Solly - 7
    Semedo - 5.5
    Youga - 6
    Basey - 7
Wagstaff - 6 (for effort, would be 5 for quality of contribution)
    Stavrinou - 7
    Spring - 4.5
    Small - 5.5
    Gray - 6
Mcleod - 6 (for effort, would be 4 for quality of contribution)

    Bailey - 6
    Fleets - 6
    Burton - 6
  • F5 + me = Sorry.
  • I went last night and feel this proves how threadbare our squad is.

I think we may have the best team of 11 players in the Division , but the squad needs improving.

We can now concentrate on the Johnstones Paint Trophy

Agree with the other posters in the main. However, thought Spring was average like most of them and had a better game than Stav (but when you consider experience etc was more pleased with Stav).

Thought Bailey did well when he came on which hasn't been mentioned.

I know Gray's not 100% fit and I have defended him for ages, but he was still not jumping.

The only player guaranteed to start on Saturday in same position barring injuries is Elliot.IMO

Can't see following starting :- Solly, Basey, Small, Wagstaff, Stavrinou, Spring, Gray, McLeod.

Expect Semedo to start in midfield and Youga or Basey at left back.

So whilst disappointing, it was basically the reserves.

NB Hereford is a nice town, but I doubt I will be returning.
  • If we'd beaten Hereford, and then Portsmouth, we'd be away to Carlise.
But we didn't, so we won't.
