so it DOES NOT MATTER ? how many many times have i herd that BS in the last 7/8 seasons ? "its about the league"---" we need to stay in the prem" " go up" etc etc etc
so how about we find out what its like to thrash the f**k out of someone in a Cup ??? how would that do for the players who play that games confidence ? and the fans that rocked up and payed to watch ?
If we aint going to put our strongest team in it shouldnt be called Charlton Athletic FC but " a Charlton 11"---------------same with Curbs, Parbollox and Parky.
I guess Millsmall will be gutted that they stuffed Bournemouth , that they are in the next round and their players scored a few.

was hardly a surprise going out in first round of the cup, so nothing new there. its going to be a long season with a small squad so its vital to make sure they arent worn out byfebruary. a lot of the team are young, inexperienced or carrying injuries, etc. a big club we may be in this division, but in reality our squad is unsettled and the teams around us have far lower expectations and they may have squads settled over a longer period. settled or fresh faces. which is better?
[cite]Posted By: Oggy Red[/cite]Pardew went first 2 games undeafeated in his first 2 games at Charlton - should have won the first v Fulham, and won the second v Villa.
I think we are kidding ourselves to say it doesnt matter.....of course it does, every game should be approached as winnable.....despite several youngsters, there was enough so called quality in that side to beat a Division 4 team. £2.7 Millions worth of strikers showed yet again that they couldnt hit a barn door, so maybe its best to let Gray and McLeod go sooner rather than later. I sense a spark of wanting it to happen from Fleetwood.....maybe we should give the lad a proper try....alongside Burton who (and I never thought Id hear myself say this) looks a very good bet in this division. Its apparent that the club want to offload McLeod (salary and inability to score) Gray (more salary and much the same in the scoring department) Fleetwood (probably nothing to do with salary, but they have no faith) and Dixon (who knows what they think, but he himself has looked too casual from what Ive seen of him)...so that would leave us with Deon Burton....makes me wonder what the bigger picture is.....time is running out with just over 2 weeks left in the transfer window and no money to spend unless the illusive take over takes place....and even then, who knows if they will give the manager anything to actually spend? We cant rely on 4-4-1-1 forever, that makes us one dimensional (as we saw when we attempted 4-4-2 on Sat) and predictable.
So if you had been manager faced with this match, prioritising promotion, a thin squad carrying injury and afraid to risk certain key players, what would you have done .... ?
Parky had 3 first choice defenders carrying injuries who were either unfit or he dare not risk them breaking down - injured players need recovery time.
He needs them to start on Saturday. And the only defensive cover was an untried centre half on the bench who's never played a competitive game. So he patched the team using inexperienced youngsters and players out of position.
By all accounts those players performed reasonably well and didn't let themselves down.
It's important young players get competitive match experience. They have a certain amount of ability but usually it's lack of experience that shows them up - so they need a chance to play.
No manager picks a team to lose a game. But sometimes there are other benefits - last night he played his 4-4-2 strikers, one who was very much in need of playing time, and the other he needed a goal at all costs. The chances were created, but not taken.
If Gray's penalty had not been saved, we may very well have won the match.
This result just goes to prove how fecked we are.We hung on for dear life against Wycombe in a terrible second half performance. The result though would hopefully get some confidence pumping round our veins.Well that confidence was flushed straight down the jonny,Charlton style, after last nights debacle.Expect Hartlepool to beat us soundly and a very rough ride down the league one road.
I think perhaps I was a bit kind on them, but hey Im a glass half full kind of bloke. Agree with Large, Stav did the work of two in the midfield, Spring was a real disappointment, I had high hopes for him when he arrived, but his attitude seems and workrate is poor.
Was really impressed with Solly, worked tirelessly against a quick winger and despite his small stature proved he can do a job in the first team.
so Millwall have a bigger squad ? even when we were a "big" team we have been shit in this cup. Looks very good that 5 of our first team got injured after one game ! so we need a squad of about 200 if we are going to TRY to win games.
Dont enter the f**kin thing if we are going to put a B team out.
Oggy...good points but I think most people, me included, are dissapointed with the so called experienced players....Solly and Stav proved their worth...Waggy at the moment isnt quite ready for the step up...the rest, Spring, Bailey, Semedo, Youga, Gray, McLeod, are hardly inexperienced...I expected us to lose, but I didnt know the team when I predicted that loss....from players who played last night.....I expect more.
I can see both sides of the argument but I don't think Parky had the luxury of actually being able to make a choice - he had to play that side last night because of all the injuries to key players (maybe Racon and Bailey aside).

Bang on, Heathy.
If only the moaners put themselves in Parky's shoes last night.
Faced with the injury situation and a match that came round far too quickly for a squad with little experienced cover for key players, really what would they have done differently from Parky yesterday....?
It's a match we should have won, even with that rag bag side. Parky knows that too.
But it was good experience for young players, valuable match fitness for squad players, and Parky could see if the likes of Semedo and Youga are in fact reliable options at centre back, lol
He even opted to play 4-4-2.
We had very good chances to win, and we didn't take them. That's why we lost to an extra time goal.
I have no wish to be in Parky shoes Oggy!....... In fact I do not think that Parky should be in the managers shoes, perhaps that is the first issue I have.
Having said that, which is hardly new the view I have held for some considerable time, why is it that the fringe players especially the forwards do not take there chance when they have an opportunity like last night.
I admit that I have a high expectation of Charlton , probably unrealistic, not based on the real facts!. If we have injuries then please do play the kids, I think the issue here is the balance of the team/squad, especially the strikers who should be able to compete at this level, injuries aside.
Ken not sure if McLeod and Gray can be considered as fringe players, may not be 1st 11 - yet, which is why i am dissapointed about the result. Gray can at least be excused for getting back to fitness, having had precious few minutes on the pitch since January, due to injury.
The sparseness of the squad and the team that parkie had to put out yesterday cannot really be blamed on the manager, but on the takeover and the controls on bringing players in.
yeah so we are out of a cup we couldnt give a fluff about.... were hardly gonna win it... old dowie did the best weve ever done an unfortunately hes gone ; )
its all about the weekend.... if we get done over we are in trouble with the amazingly fragile confidence thing...
and a win and we are title challengers....
red pete your commets scare me..... they are very true in my mind....
So I am going to grab on to hope until it is cruely snatched away from me by reality.... ( i could put reality on paper but i would rather not
I`ll do Parkys job Oggy no worries. Hide for two seasons in the kit cupboard. Do the caretakers job (couldnt possibly do worse), get us religated., and then hide in kit cupboard again . Rack up the wages for doing not very much -----------------yep ill have a go at that.
As for last night ------------ fed up with the excuses for lsoing in cups ----------------fed up with geting turned over by teams that are in lower leagues. Still on that one we might have to worry to much about teams being "lower" than us shortly.
[cite]Posted By: Heath Hero[/cite]I can see both sides of the argument but I don't think Parky had the luxury of actually being able to make a choice - he had to play that side last night because of all the injuries to key players (maybe Racon and Bailey aside).
Wasn't there but I have to agree with that. I think some people are forgetting we had five injuries to our first choice 11 (plus Dickson with the Ghana squad). If he had played Racon and Bailey in the middle and then they got injured, we'd all be moaning why didn't he play Spring and Stavrinou to give them a game and see what they can do.
Pleased to hear Solly did well, thought he would do. Good to know Stavrinou had a decent game as well, wasn't sure how he'd do, sounds like he was clearly better than Spring. Not surprised Wagstaff struggled, he's never really looked good enough for the first team unfortunately.
As I said on the other thread a virtual reserve team held a team relegated from the division we are now in for more than 90 minutes and could have won had Gray taken his chance or converted the penalty.
the league has to be the priority and Parky selected a squad to reflect that. Hopefully Sam, Racon, Bailey, Shelvey, Richardson, Llera, Dailly and Burton all start against Hartlepool.
Count the names 8 players (that's 8!) of Saturday's starting 11 didn't start last night and only 2 of those came on as subs towards the end of normal time.
Yes it's disappointing to lose any match but please look at the bigger picture!
I don't think we should worry too much about the Cup. What would you rather have at the end of the season? Quarter finals of the cup and 12th place or 1st round of the cup and promotion? We're no going to win the cup so it doesn't matter.
Right, first of all, I can say I was there so my comments are based on first hand knowledge. I live in the midlands so tend to restrict seeing charlton to away games. In my view, away games gives you the chance to see the real character of a team - and it is away performances that will decide whether or not we go up. The added adavntage of being at Hereford yesterday was I got to stand and we were right near the touchline. From that close up point of view it was obvious to me that there is no teamwork and no fight among the players. These are effectively reserve players who should be working their b****cks off to get in the first team - I didn't see any of that - team spirit was non existent. To me it all points in one direction - PARKY!!.. He has no respect from the players, none from the fans - the performance was a disgrace. If we'd scored from the pen it would simply have papered over the shambles, much as saturday's scoreline did I imagine. The man must go - simple as - and for all those who say we can't afford to let him go - how can we afford to keep him? As it is, I predict that we will be in the bottom half of the table after 10 games at which point he will go - hopefully on 1st October, which would be a great birthday present for me.

I only followed the match on the wireless so my opinion is not really very valid, thanks to you, and everybody else who was there for your reports which add up to the same old same old it seems to me.

Spot on
Agree 100% GH.
See Pardew's new boys won last Night!
So he's on course.
Fingers crossed!

Let's just hope Dailly, Llera and Richardson are fit for Saturday and we can bounce back with a win.
Exactly, we'll see a very different team on Saturday, similar to the one that beat Wycombe.
