I really don't but in to this ex-Palace thing. Would the same people saying this really have turned down Ian Wright in his prime for that very reason? It didn't stop him doing a brilliant job for the Reading fans did it?
Steve Coppell is THE best English Manager around and on that basis is probably too good for us. Would be worth asking him the question though.

Players is one thing, managers another. We've signed good (Powell) bad (Butterfield) and indifferent (Bright) ex Palarse players. But the track record of former Glaziers as manager of Charlton is dire... Dowie, Pardoo...
The reasons I wouldn't want Coppell as manager are 1 we can't afford him and 2 he's flaky - THREE spells working for Jordan, a nightmare at Man City.
3 spells working for Palace - only one under Jordan and it lasted a few weeks. One of the most decent men in football and Jordan fell out with him very quickly (remember Jordan also doesn't get on with Dario Gradi - I see a patterm of decent people not liking SJ)
Coppell is probably on a par with Alan C as one of the best English managers in the last 20 years. Suggestion is he plans to retire or have a long break from football
His success rate is patchy.....blows hot and cold as far as I can see he builds a team up but seems unable to sustain them once he gets a bit of success with them....strange that.
I don't buy into the general Coppell love-in. He's managed teams in more than 1,000 games but has he picked up many trophies?
He won promotion with Palarse in 89 and the ZDS Cup, but took them down again and walked out.
He went back there and, after failing to get promoted, walked out again.
In 96 he managed Man City for a month, before... walking out again.
He then went back to Palarse and took them up, then down again before being sacked when they looked like going down again.
At Brentford he failed to get promotion, then ... walked out.
At Brighton, he took them down. Then, the following season as they were closing in on promotion ... he walked out on them.
At Reading in his second season, they bottled it and threw away a promotion chance. The following season he got them promoted. Two seasons later he took them down, but promised fans he was committing his future to Reading. One un-successful season later, he's walked out again.
25 years, the ZDS trophy, 3 promotions, 4 relegations.
[cite]Posted By: Dazzler21[/cite]Did like his honesty though "I have had the fire power and the play makers and the defence to get promoted and i've failed"
Not "We've failed" but "I've Failed!"
Let's hope Charlton's Board took note of that quote and reflect on what a disaster he would be with no fire power and no defence.
[cite]Posted By: Henry Irving[/cite]And Mark Bright "indifferent" Vital part of the play -off team more like.
But you wouldn't single him out as the reason we won that final.
Wouldn't single anyone out as the reason we won that final, including Mendonca, but Bright set up the first goal and scored and created a lot of goals in the run up.
7 league goals in 13 starts plus 3 sub appearances. Just under a goal every other game. Hardly "indifferent"

No, but he scored some vital goals in the run-in, particularly in all those 1-0 wins.

Anyway, back to Coppell. I'm not that fussed about the Palace connection from our point of view, but it would give the Palace fans even more ammunition to throw at us if it didn't work out. You don't have to win shedloads of trophies to be a good manager - it depends how you manage under the circumstances you are in. By this reasoning, you'd probably argue Dario Gradi wasn't a good manager.
[cite]Posted By: Dazzler21[/cite]Jesus if missing out on promotion by the skin of your teeth is unsuccesful what just happened to us is baffling!
Did like his honesty though "I have had the fire power and the play makers and the defence to get promoted and i've failed"

Like Dazzler, I'm amazed at the people who don't rate Coppell.
Certainly at Championship level, he's got to be among the best managers in the game, especially with his wealth of experience and relative success.
The bloke's a dour Northerner and as down to earth as you can get, calls a spade a spade, doesn't take any truck from primadonna players or domineering interfering ego-fuelled chairman.
Palace history .... ? that's a long time ago - and pre- Slimy Jordan.
More like, he'll get job offers in the Championship, and won't need to dip his toe in the tepid waters of the Third Division, so I shouldn't worry about him being offered anything at Charlton.
One other thing, you don't remain a manager for 20 years - if you can't manage.

Not "We've failed" but "I've Failed!"
Imagine Pardew, - "the fans put too much pressure on the players, the players just did not do enough and the board interfered with me too much, otherwise I would have got this team promotion against the odds."
[cite]Posted By: Henry Irving[/cite]but Bright set up the first goal and scored and created a lot of goals in the run up.
And blocked the keeper for Rufus's goal. May have been in the twighlight of his career but was a vital part of the team over two seasons.

Good manager, but not that good.

Maybe not but might interest Curbs

Class player.
Also I can see alot of players now leaving Reading. Can't only see them going downhill from here.

I don't get it!What credentials? On average, he walks away from a managerial role with the club in a slightly worse position than when he took over.
I don't think he can be blamed too harshly for Reading being relegated from the Premiership. He didn't get much financial backing from his Chairman.
