[cite]Posted By: J BLOCK joe[/cite]this story has been circulating around addickted for a long time now, and you always get some one saying that your friends mum's nan's cat works for the club and a takeover is close. However a regular poster on addickted reckons ( and i quote) "I was speaking to my uncle a minute ago and he's a good mate of the club doctor (as i've stated before), and the rumours regarding Peter Varney's attempts to lead a consortium to buy the club are 100% true (whether or not there is any success in this attempt we don't know) and if successful his main objective will be to literally crawl on all fours and beg Curbs to come back."
Unlikely perhaps but watch this space i guess...
I'm sorry, I love Curbs as much as the next man but I think people need to put their reality caps on at the moment.
When Curbs became co-manager in 1991 we were potless and had to beg, borrow and steal players to compete in Tier Two (or whatever the feck it was called back then).
That was when he was 33 or 34, does he really want to go back to doing that as a 50 year-old in the THIRD TIER? Especially as a bloke who has managed for a decade in the Premiership? I can't see it.
What's more, do we really want him back? Yes, we know he can manage but what if he DOESN'T get it right second time around? What will be the reaction then? How many people imagined on Boxing Day 2006 that within two years that Alan Pardew would be reviled by Charlton fans and have been sacked? Not many, I tell you. Do we really want to risk that with Curbs if it goes sour?
I am not saying that I don't want him back or would not have him back, just that we need to think of the bigger picture.
I think that what is more realistic is if someone else does the donkey work and gets us back to being a competitive Championship outfit that Curbs could then be persuaded to come back.
By taking on a Third Tier club he is massively and possibly permanently lowering his value in the market - does he really want to do that?
Good points ormiston, well let's see if the takeover happens then worry about who's in charge, if the new administration decided parky wasn't the right man who else could they turn to? It would seem rather crazy after sticking wih parky through a caretaker spell od just 2 points gained, to part company just when perhaps he's got the team playing better. Id be interested to know but I wonder how the team would feel with another change. I get the feeling most like parky.
Curbs has nothing to gain and everything to lose coming back as manager, but how about as Director of Football? We'd get the benefit of all of his contacts and knowledge and get someone on the board whose football judgement is respected. Would be kind of ironic given why he left West Ham but if he invested some of the wedge he's due from the Hammers as part of the consortium it would make more sense in some ways than coming back as manager.
aint got a clue if true-----but if Curbs contract was written with clauses in it that he could leave after 6 months if a Prem League team (even name them in contract) came in, then it could be possible.

Curbs -- Director of Football
Di Canio
Manager
17,000 season tickets next season !! FACT.
Can't see Curbs taking on the role he so disliked having over him at West Ham but it will be interesting to see who would be his back up team IF it happens.
Kinsella maybe, Day for sure, Chris Powell? Would love that. Alan Pardew? Maybe not ; - )
Who knows ? the club needs to be put back together football wise as well as money wise. It dosnt matter what the job discription is called as long as Curbs can get away when he needs to and CAFC are in a stable position moving forward.
The chap whose called manager--- head coach --- whatever will have to be someone with little if no former experience of that position -- or (like Curbs) he will hate the fact he has someone over him. In the states its called MENTORING and works well if your mentor knows their business.
Sorry to burst the bubble on that "My uncle spoke to the team doctor" thing from Addickted, but the person who posted that originally is my cousin 'Murphy'. Yes, our uncle does know the team Doctor but he certainly told him no such thing. Utter bo11ocks. Don't know why he would lie to everyone but there you go. Thought I'd blow the whistle. In fact, our uncle didn't know anything about it until I myself mentioned it to him. Having said that, I think there is something in the Varney takeover rumour, but you can discount that particular "source"

Thanks Olly,
Proof if needed that such "rumours" about "I know someone etc etc" are mostly rubbish and should be treated as such.

Agree, There will be plenty of time to pick over the pros and cons over the summer if it happens.
We can all start to play fantasy football manager then.
