[cite]Posted By: nigel w[/cite]Peter Varney knows what the Zabeel fiasco did to us . He loves Charlton to the core and is a man of deep honour. Therefore if there was nothing in this story, I am convinced he would have killed it immediately. It would be irresponsible of him not to do so - and he is not an irresponsible man.
true
Not sure why it would be irresponsible of him not to kill this off - even untrue. I appreciate that all the rumours are frustrating but that's the way it is with football.
As said above, there is a lot of gun jumping going on based on a small throwaway paragraph in The Sun.
A few points:
1. There has been nothing official to confirm or deny there is anything in this story. At present, it is a speculative non-story
2. If there is anything in it, there is no idea at how tentative / advanced talks may be. As we have learned from the past, widespread or frenzied speculation can have a damaging effect.
3. If there is anything in it, there is no idea on who the individuals might be behind it, whether it is an individual or a group, local, national or overseas, what sort of wealth they would bring, or what their intentions for the club would be.
I tihnk everyone needs to be patient and adopt a wait and see approach. Tentative approaches and interest in football clubs happen a hell of a lot more than people realise, and 90% of the time come to nothing.
Sorry but it is a rumour and a rumour with little or no substance IMHO from a notoriously unreliable newspaper.
If it is true PV and the consortium aren't going to say anything until a deal is done or very close to being done in any case.
If, as I suspect, there is nothing to it then why should PV or the club deny it? They would then have to respond to every rumour otherwise people would say "well, they denied that but not this so must be true".
When it's on the OS it's true. Until then, for me, it's wait and see.
EDIT: was writing this as AFKA posted. What he said.

And just to back that point up, i've just read that 19 seperate groups / individuals have expressed an interest in Southampton since last week.
Agree with every word of that, AFKA. We don't know how tentative the plan is, but PV would have denied it if it was a complete fabrication. Why? Because if it is untrue that such a trusted and respected servant of Charlton has any interest in trying to put together a rescue plan, then pie-eyed talk of such a rescue is destabilising for everyone involved in the club - particularly when there are 31 club employees facing the sack in May. It would be irresponsible to let them beleve there was some false hope.
In my view, PV would not allow that happen and would have issued a short but firm denial, without confirming details of any plans he may be trying to put together.
We will, indeed, have to wait and see. But in the absence of a denial from PV, I will chose to live in hope.

I don't agree that we should adopt a wait and see approach - I think a rumour frenzy is much more fun .....

All Real Fans know what is going on anyway. Our Henry is actually leading the consortium, surprised he's not giving it the large on here at the mo, is all the funding in place then ? Were you joking about re-naming the South Stand as well ?

If he gives this story credence then I'm inclined to agree with him.
good point
So Peter Varney killed Princess Di??
Crikey, dont think we want someone like that involved with our club....
;-)
You check. Varney was in Paris that weekend signing El Karouri. FACT
He may be surprised when he gets back.
And owned a white uno! FACT
No, that wasn't him. He came out and denied that. Steve Sutherland did it for him.
That was his company car then.
We couldn't afford much but we got a good deal on an Uno with Barcelona plates from Llanera
Phew, not me this time. Henry...?! ;-)
I'd love this to happen, but am trying not to think about it TOO much...
Varney acts as a 'conduit' for negotiations and the 'deal' goes ahead:
1) Varney becomes Managing Director
2) Curbs becomes Manager
3) Richard Murray chairs the new Board.
And, hey presto!, we've turned back the clock 10 years, just like that.
And Len Glover and Ooh Aah Mortimer think they've died and gone to heaven.
;o)
Can we have Mendonca and Hunt back, too?
I asked my mother
what shall I be?
Will I famous? Will I be rich
Here's what she said to me.
Que Sera Sera
Whatever will be will be
It may or may not include Peter Var-ney
Que Sera Sera.
When it's on the OS then I'll get excited, till then I'm gonna chill.
At least Peter lives in Bromley so we'll have no trouble getting him along to Bromley Addicks : - )
