The wording of the Sun article is quite strong : ''close to buying'' the club. When the tabs are taking a wild punt without a reliable source, the language is usually a lot more nebulous - ''planning to'', contermplating'' , ''attempting to put together..''. But no, this article says quite unequivally that the deal is ''close''.
As far as I am aware, there has been no denial from Mr Varney since the story broke, so that's further evidence that there is something in it (if the absence of something can be taken as evidence- which according to Sherlock Holmes, it can).
Everyone should say a prayer tonight. We're never going to rise again under the current board, who have run out of money, energy and vision. So please, please, please let it be true!
Its funny, I am so used to the backers of takeovers that I was totally underwhelmed by this news after all, Varney does not sound arabic or american or korean. But the more I thinkl about it the more it sounds like it could be good news if it goes through. Obviously it is not varney putting the bulk of the money, but he will have brought the parties together and recommended them to Minty as having charltons interests at heart, so rock on peter, reel them in and lets at least have a club to be proud of next season.
This would be absolutely fantastic if it came to pass, Varney is a Charlton man thru and thru. I wouldn't imagine for one minute that it would be in the mega bucks category that were muted at the time of the Zabeel bid but since that didn't happen that's academic. I would imagine that Mr Varney would set about stabilizing the club first and foremost and then attempt to build the club back up again in the old fashioned way. Hopefully reserving a space for Richard Murray whatever happens, as it is him we have to thank for making us a reasonably large club in the first place.
Even if the consortium hes leading isnt that rich i think it would be great. As long as he has as much money as murray. As he has a lot better chance of taking us back and is a lot better at doing the chairman job

Did that last night - only for AFKA (well I think it was him as he was on-line at the time) to remove all the posts and pictures (which I must say were rather good!).
I think he want's to keep this thread sensible!!
For the record and to keep on subject before I get a finger wagging, telling off - Peter is a top bloke!
I reckon a better plan would have been to start strongly, be strong in the middle part of the season, and then finish strongly as well, hey, maybe thats just me?
DA9, I am admitedly a little sceptical over the finish strongly, his previuos utterances have not exactly been prolific or season turning in any good way.
God I hope this is true but if there is any legs in it why would any potential new buyers not be interested in the training ground ? If a buyout was happening then it is obvious that Sparrows would not be included and that to me just doesn`t make any sense. I therefore am highly doubtful unless anyone can give me a sensible business reason for the above. I hope someone can.
For what it's worth, an "club insider" told a friend of mine several weeks ago that PV and Curbs were behind a take-over - but it seemed so unlikely that I never gave it any more thought. Hope it turns out to be true though.

There is a buy back clause on the bits of the training ground and on the house in Landsdowne mews so any new owner could and most likely would re-buy them.
It's a newspaper rumour. Peter's not denied it but he hasn't denied killing Princess Diana either.
There are no quotes, no sources, no other names other than the ex-CEO which is an obvious name to pick out of the air if you making something up.
It could well be true, and boy I hope it is, but I'll won't hold my breath.
If there is nothing in this rumour I hope Peter Varney denies it very soon as although I am not getting exited or hopeful, just a little bit of me is getting exited and hopeful ;0)

agreed beginning to get annoyed theres not been a denial/confirmation or any updates atall
Peter Varney knows what the Zabeel fiasco did to us . He loves Charlton to the core and is a man of deep honour. Therefore if there was nothing in this story, I am convinced he would have killed it immediately. It would be irresponsible of him not to do so - and he is not an irresponsible man.

I NEED SOME MORE NEWS
I reserve judgement and a little bit of optimism.
Having said that, Parky aims to 'finish strongly', so that's OK then.
(cue the response of "well we've rolled over and died for 40 games this season, why change?")

Maybe he knows something.
