  • I am truly dumbfounded that some people are making this out to be the club's fault.
  • Is there any liability of being fined / punished if deemed unsatisfactory actions were taken ?

then it would be the clubs fault
  • Be as dumbfounded as you like, WSS, but reading F&H's post, the club has a lot to answer for. And no, i'm not on the mailing list, so I didn't know about the tent.

Sorry, Ketman, but i've just sent an angry email to your dad - Rick, isn't it? (Still trying to laugh through gritted teeth.)
  • [cite]Posted By: March51[/cite]When I were a lad we played when ground were like concrete with housebricks sticking out of it. And snow, we used to plough through 3 foot of snow with t' ball and smack it into net from 30 yards. No boots mind,we 'ad rags tied round our feet. Pansy footballers these days, don't know they're born. Tents were for them as could afford a bit more than a cardboard box.

And you try telling the kids of today. And they won't believe you..........
  • Weegie

it aint off yet though is it.

Just think you copuld come down for saturday and go home knowing that we didnt lose :-)

sorry for larfing at your pain

    You 'ad rags!

Spoilt, cossetted! We used to kick stones wit our bare feet int snow before we played so t' ball felt soft in comparison!

    Thee don't know tha's born!

They'll get blamed for Global Warming next...

If the club announced a month ago that we were spending £100k on a new pitch covering rather than going towards new players etc what would people's reaction be?

Brum said last saturday when the game vs. Wolves was called off (see its not just us, Jesus) they decided to spend money on the squad rather than undersoil heating and if we werent in such a dire situation I think people would look at this very differently.

Sorry for you Weegie with your flights and everything but the club are not culpable in my opinion.

[cite]Posted By: stop shouting[/cite]Team for Saturday:

    Benny Hill
Stan Laurel, Frank Spencer, Norman Wisdom, Djimi Traore
Charlie Chaplin, Olly Hardy, Corporal Jones, Eric Morecombe
    Jack Douglas, Trigger

Trigger up front, that would definitely be worth seeing, cant be much worse than what we already have!

Sub: Mike Yarwood, because he could make an impression in any position.

Captain Mainwaring can be the manager.
Unless you'd prefer Co-Co the Clown.

I'm equally upset with all you know-it-alls on here who suddenly aren't surprised. There were only a couple of jokey passing mentions at the start of the week. I assumed because the cup game went ahead then this one would be unlikely to be in doubt - esp as the weather is improving a little. More fool me, eh?

48 hours still to go Weegie.

I reckon the game will be on.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Point taken. However, if you buy something for that amount of money then surely you would have some sort of insurance on it in the event of it breaking.
  • so i guess if it is called off on sat Bailey misses the Norwich cup game then :-)

But they DO have a responsibility to make every effort possible to ensure they fulfill their home fixtures.

That will be a stated rule (i'm not sure the Premier League rule of undersoil heating / similar heating operation is the same for the football league).

They knew a week before a game, to want of a better effect, that their heating system was broke, that they did not have enough covers, and the ones they did were not adequate enough to cope with the expected weather forecast for the week ahead.

The transferable box burner system we previously used was extremely effective, and we once lent it to Birmingham to save from postponing a match.

Have we been making any other effort other than simply covering part of the pitch with what we know to be inadequate covers, and hoping for the best, that's all i'm asking.
  • Can we call off a game as early as tomorrow? I mean its going to be sunny tomorrow so surely it coudl be defrosted by saturday morning?

Hope you're right Len, but read the report on the official site - I doubt it. We're more concerned about letting the Forst fans know in good time so as not to upset their travel plans. Great!!!
  • Right Oggy, before we 'ad rags we nailed studs to uz feet and kicked rocks while using boulders for heading practice. And it were under water mind in freezing lake.

Unless it is so bad that it's beyond repair of course...

And Weeg, I know you're upset that you would have wasted hard earned money on it, and I do feel sorry for you. I don't think i'm a know it all - I never thought this game would be called off BUT having read the facts about the bubble and things I just don;t think the club can justify paying out a significant amount of money to ensure the game is on.

AFKA - take your point completely but I really think that the club would have tried as hard as they could to make sure the game is on. Mainly because they are more likley to get increased matchday revenues from a Saturday game than a midweek game.
  • The club don't want the pitch cut up, not with the Youth Cup game on wednesday. ;-0

With the weather not thawing out till sunday/monday, and an inflatable tent, that is up there with a chocalate fireguard, i'm not confident.
  • but if the game is postponed and most likely the game will be played on a week night the majority of the 2.5k forest fans will ask for a refund can we afford losing this money. damn it im in the brain of Mr Chappell !

But we're not talking £100k, are we? That's the cost of replacing this piece of non-functoning equipment. To repair it would cost only a fraction of that - but we can't even afford that, it seems! Or, according to floydandharvey's post, even basic plastic sheeting to cover the half of the ground that we are told is totally uncovered ! Funny that the pic on the OS only shows the half that is covered !!!

And if "a club official announced on the mailing list a couple of days ago that the Forest game would almost certainly be called off", why did the warning only appear on the O/S at lunchtime today?

Total sympathy with Weegie. But I think we're going to have to get used to it because there's clearly going to be more and more of this sort of thing in our seemingly near-bankrupt state.
  • I think its the night time temps that are the problem, I have just checked the 5 day forecast on the BBC web site and for the London area it is showing 3c for the day time today, Fri & Sat but the night time temps are 0c tonight and -3c for Friday night/Saturday morning.

If the temp predictions of -3c are right and the club do not improve the pitch covering I cannot see the ground being anything less than frozen on Sat morning.

And if you do read this Parky, no we don't want Christopher Dean and Jane Torvil on loan for a month :-)
  • We need to play the game on Saturday, especially if the pitch is iced up and unfit.

Forest will go to pieces on a frozen slippery surface, as they won't be able to keep their feet.
We can never keep ours anyway, as our players usually fall over at critical times - so we might have the best chance of winning a match yet.
  • long-term forecast for Charlton

Most matches have been called off this week because of the weather, Orient's got called off last Saturday, it's milder than it was on Tues/Weds night, but it's still expected to be around -3C at night between now and the weekend.

Only about half of the pitch requires covering as half of it is in the sun and therefore not frozen at all.

the sheets on the pitch protect it down to -4 but the ground temp out there at 3am has been about -8 the last 2 nights. its due to be -7ish on thursday night and friday night so although the day temps are warmer, from friday the night temps are the issue and whether there is better weather during the day to thaw it out. obviously if the temp is 3 during the day, thats hardly going to heat anything up.

edited to say, although at night it is -3 ground temp is usually 3 degrees lower.

the accurate weather report on monday/tuesday showed warmth through the tail end of the week with the weather improving on wednesday, but this has since changed over tuesday/wednesday with it remaining cold.

there are a lot of things that you can control, but you can't control the weather.
  • I would suspect that the south end of the Valley pitch is covered because it gets sod all sun on it, due to the roof in the south stand.

And since we're skint, we need the match to go ahead on Saturday because hospitality bookings, etc, aren't as good for midweek games.

Like your logic, Oggy. Finally nearly made me smile :-)

Nigel - agree we need to get used to it. I stupidly sometimes still think of us as a club with a Premiership stadium. Yet everything else about us looks more non-league by the day (that kit for starters).

LOL. Do you think he ever did...?
  • What Suzi Said, the club covered the pitch straight after the Norwich game, you cannot get more pro-active than that. As for the cost of hiring extra stuff to get the game, helllooooo has anyone been paying attention re the financial position we are in.

Finally Weegie...bless ya for spending your hard earned to come down & all that but if you call my Dad Rick again I will get 1905 to sit on you. :-)

P.S. The game may still be on so a lot of hot air being expelled on something that may not even happen.
