Secondly, more ale is consumed at the city addicks q+a than possibly all the other q+a's. I find it very hard the next day to accurately remember what is said, and i'm sure there are many others in the same boat !

Thanks for organising Curb It, AFKA's post has reminded me that I may have been there last night :o)
Now I just need to work out where I bought the Curry.
  • Inspector Sands said 'And I'd also like to show my appreciation to the Jamelia-alike bar-lady.'

get to the back of the queue mate !!
  • I just want to clear up one thing.

A mate said to me at the weekend he'd heard i'd given Richard a grilling on why they haven't sacked Pardew. Just want to make clear that isn't what i said.

What i said was 'Richard, the supporters agreed with the board wholeheartedly that on his appointment Pardew was the right man for this club at the right time, and it was seen as a coup by us. I do not blame him for us falling out the Premiership, but the facts remain that the last 11 months have been extremely disappointing. We finished 11th with a top 3 budget last season, you said in May that Pardew had made mistakes and he would be a better manager for it. Sadly we have seen little evidence so far of that and we continue to fall. After the Barnsley game, some of us in various ways expressed the opinion that now was the right time for a change in management regime, do you feel we were wrong to do so, and secondly how much longer has the current regime got to get things right ?'

Just didn't want people to think i stood up banging the table demanding to know why he hasn't been sacked.

    Perfectly reasonable question I reckon.

Well there's one for the Chinese Whispers. Was a good question that was only surpassed by the first question about the Hereford Goalkeeper .... Jesus H I thought ...

    That one was me.
I figured that, as Randolph was "topic of the day" so to speak, it would be a reasonably straight forward one to start with before all the expected doom & gloom questions about the current league position, finances and whether Pards should be sacked etc.

    If you say so ...

Nothing wrong with that AFKA and Murray will have been expecting it (and probably a less reasonable question that the one you asked).
  • what was his answer

bump wtf did minty say in response to your reasonable question

  • it was side-stepped with professional aplomb, but i was kind of expecting that.

    Just felt it needed saying.
  • i prefer that answer to 'you should have been there'....... and to leave us hanging;-)

As the drinking during the game blog reported it

The key question of the evening about Alan Pardew's future was well worded by someone "AFKA" and answered with the anticipated diplomatic aplomb. There was absolutely no side to the way this question was answered and Murray spoke up on Pardew's behalf about the unexpected financial restrictions he's faced this Summer and the practicalities of replacing him. His only criticism of SAP, if you could call it that, was that he's maybe bought players who might not be best suited to getting you out of the Championship. By this he meant more of an emphasis on skill as opposed to strength. If this is the case, then it's an added disappointment bearing in mind Pardew's success in promoting Reading and West Ham from this league already. Having said that, I do recall Alan Pardew acknowledging changes in this division since he was here with them, so maybe that's a fair observation. I remain convinced, however, that Alan Pardew now has an expiry date and that he will be sacked sooner rather than later without a significant change in fortunes.
  • I will add that when we were chatting outside during the break, i mentioned the stat about us not winning 2 successive games in something like 46 now. He wasn't aware of that and was genuinely shocked. We had a good conversation, and he feels just as much anguish as every other fan.
He is such a genuine guy i felt guilty speaking to him in a way not fully committed to the set up etc, but i'd have been false to myself if i had not said what i believed. I just made sure what i said was balanced and respectful.

i'm guessing after the norwich game around christmas eve... it will be his 2 year anniversary in charge and his '2 year plan' will have been completed;-)
  • Two Charlton fans using the word 'aplomb' ! Next thing you know Rothko will be using 'trite'.....
  • Now the official website is getting in on the act... taken from the reserve match report:

"After a quiet start to the game, the Addicks went in front in the seventh minute. Basey's fine pass released Dickson down the left and the striker cut inside to tee up Shelvey, who slotted home with APLOMB"

AFKA, as a school governor (retired) I am familar with the notion of being a "critical friend". Like a stick of rock, if you break us we will have "Charlton Til I Die" in red letters right the way through our bodies. Richard Murray is the same. That doesn't mean that we should accept everything the club does without question. Our playing record under Pards has fallen short of minimum expectations. It's absolutely right, I'd almost say a duty when one of the Captains of the club puts their heads up above the parapet, to call them to account. What you did was right and in the right way. That's what being a critical friend is all about.
  • Trite - there you go, beat the little bugger to it

    More likely a trike...

    I'll get my coat.
