Sorry to take the Michael, but it continues in the same vein next week ...........

    Thursday 31st July 2008 - Chester (away) League 2 (7:45pm)
    Saturday 2nd August 2008 - WBA - Kris o'Leary testimonial Premier League (3:00pm)
Saturday 2nd August 2008 - Clevedon Town v Swansea City XI (away - The Hand Stadium - 3pm)

Tuesday 5th August 2008 - Haverfordwest County v Swansea City XI (away - New Bridge Meadow - 7:30pm)

Obviously Chester, Clevedon and Haverfordwest with all due respect not the biggest , but really looking forward to Den Haag ( we have a unique rapore with their supporters ....De Vries and Bodde both played for them) and WBA.

And then we play some CCC team from London on the 9th ........;)
  • Fatrob wobbles but he dont fall down like a weeble

and he is a Jack fan so he has a good scope on this lot

    flipping TaffRob more like it
  • Brighton, Dulwich Hamlet and Atletico Bilbao for us.....and of course the delights of Dover last night....
    :-)
  • martinez is the most organised manager i've ever come across, never cuts any corners and the pre-season training is spot on. the first week back he took them to sweden for high-altitude training which is fantastic for fitness and starts ball work as soon as they get back (rather than a few weeks of fitness first). in roberto i believe we have a manager of the highest potential in any div outside the prem, he's got an incredible eye for a bargain, has the team playing attractive attacking football and has got massive respect from all his players and former players. really looking forward to the new season, we don't know exactly what to expect from it, but i reckon we'll surprise a few teams.
  • i have welsh parents but was born and brought up in charlton and although living in cardiff i have season ticket in the north lower, i will attending the game with one of my best mates who happens to be a staunch jack, we will be coming up by train from cardiff and sitting in thenorth lower, he will keep his mouth shut and im sure there will be no trouble.

Bu the sound of it, Jon ........your lot should be absolutely knackered when they play us.
    Hopefully.

Done this before with mates who have been Arsenal, Spuds etc - Never been a problem
  • No worries then when i burn the welsh flag at half time. Harmless fun after all.
  • What are your atmosphere's like normally at home games then?
  • Sponsored links:

  • good with a large away following, crap if we go a goal down
  • Something we need to work on isnt it......We need to recapture that atmosphere from the Fortress Valley days...it used to give me goose bumps. The last couple of years havent been too clever, but there again we havent had much to cheer about. A good start to the season and a level of consistency and everything will change. People are only human afterall and after the way we wilted last year its no wonder a lot us ended up being quite negative. We need to start talking ourselves up again chaps......Lets all pull together and see what we can achieve
  • there are plenty of over teams who dont have much to cheer at but still get behind there team more than we do

abysmal, our support is in general very quite.....
as for our away support ..........

Your probably right Oggy, pre season burnout, we could start a trend, lol. Seriously though thats why all Swans supporters are getting excited because in years gone by we would never have coped with such a demanding pre-season but this year the squad looks more than capable to take it in its stride, apart from GK we have quality cover in all positions. Martinez's test I believe this year will be keeping them all happy.
  • JRE....whats the origin of the nickname The Jacks?
  • The origin of the name Jacks is as follows:-

Swansea Jack (1930 - October 1937) was a famous dog whose name lives on in the nickname given to natives of Swansea, Wales.

Many people believe that this stems from the famous dog of that name. Others claim that the derivation is from the nickname given to Swansea's sailors, who had a reputation as skilled and dependable mariners. Another theory is that the coal miners of nearby coalfields called the miners from Swansea "Jacks" because their lunch-boxes were uniquely made of Swansea tin and called Jacks. A noted pub in Swansea is also named Swansea Jack, in honour of the dog.

The dog, Swansea Jack, was a flat-coated retriever born in 1930. He lived in the North Dock / River Tawe area of Swansea with his master, William Thomas. Jack would always respond to cries for help from the water, diving into the water and pulling whoever was in difficulty to safety at the dockside.

His first rescue, in June 1931, when he saved a 12-year-old boy, went unreported. A few weeks later, this time in front of a crowd, Jack rescued a swimmer from the docks. His photograph appeared in the local paper and the local council awarded him a silver collar. In 1936, he had the prestigious 'Bravest Dog of the Year' award bestowed upon him by the London Star newspaper.

He received a silver cup from the Lord Mayor of London and he is still the only dog to have been awarded two bronze medals ('the canine V.C.') by the National Canine Defence League (now known as Dogs Trust). Legend has it that in his lifetime he saved 27 people from the Docks / River Tawe. Swansea Jack died in October 1937 after eating rat poison. His burial monument, paid for by public subscription, is located on the Promenade in Swansea near St. Helen's Rugby Ground. In 2000, Swansea Jack was named 'Dog of the Century' by NewFound Friends of Bristol who train domestic dogs in aquatic rescue techniques.
  • Not true jre, the true meaning of the jack nickname will be revealed in our routine 'ten things you never knew about Swansea' in the run up to the game :-)

    Wahey!!!!
  • Interesting post about the Swansea Jacks, Jon.

I've been exiled down here in deepest, darkest Cornwall for quite a while now, and learned a fair bit about the natives & traditions.

Apparently, Cornish tin miners were known as 'Jacks' ...... and when the tin mines hit bad times in the late 19th century,
many of the miners went out to Australia, South Africa & the Americas - where apparently they were all known
    as 'Cornish Jacks'.

I don't know about their lunchboxes, lol ...... but maybe the 'Jack' bit refers either to tin or the tinminers themselves - or just became a common nickname for all miners.

Anyway, blah, blah, blah ........ :o)

Ill whack a link up later i have a site that shows games from all round the world, im off home early so should be in time
  • Cheers, I can put it on PlanetSwans then , everyone on there talking about moving their Dish ....PMSL.
  • I do not get some posts on here, as a father I would worry about the potential for trouble, but I would still take my kids! I would however take all the precautions I could to avoid trouble (there is usaully some at most games), arrive early (when most knuckle heads are in the pub) and thenmm take time to peruse the club shop (when the crowds have diminished the so called hard lads are easier to spot and not so likely to ave it large).

I have been going to football on my own since i was 12 and have seen a lot of trouble but always avoided it, personal choice that has served me well. In the past I have seen a lot of trouble especially with the fans of Millwall, Carlisle, Man Utd, Chelsea, Cambridge and Cardiff.

I am looking forward to the game against a side I have never see play and who like to play an expansive game and not the physical lumps that prevailed last season in this division.
  • Cambridge? CFGS......lol
The others I can fully appreciate.

Thanks JRE that was quite interesting mate.
  • I REALLY like Martinez.

We've been watching La Liga for years & have been following him closely. As he used to be one of the pundits while he was playing over here, with the lovely Guilem (spelling) he talked alot of sense. I'm so pleased he is doing well as a manager.

I hope the game will be a real football treat.

    Enjoy the Valley, Jacks fans!

Ha Ha, very good, you are more than entitled to your opinion, I wont engage in a war of words with you about Cardiff, No need, I thought this was a Charlton Board. x
Anything you need to know about the Jacks though, be sure to ask, we're quite accomodating.
  • Only joking Jack, My best mate is a jack and he will sit with me in the charlton end, and when the return game is played i will join him in your end. Its great for welsh football that 2 teams should finnish in the top 10 in the championship this season. In fact i will be surprized if we finish above swansea or cardiff at all. I used to love going down the vetch but am looking forward to going to your new stadium for the first time. How you coming up for the game.
  • can we have Roberto when your done with him then, Mr 'we're so accommodating' Jacks fan?????
