I dont think anyone was saying dont take your kids, but people just have to be realistic and not wear rose tinted glasses, this game is one of only a couple or so that the OB would consider high risk IMO.
Makes perfect sense to know what may occur....as someone says above you can if you so wish take differant route to valley or go earlier leave later....bit drastic to say may not go.....but then again if someone feels that then so be it.........i for one would like to know particularly for away games when and where i should be more mindful of situations and its good to know some folk on here would know and share thier experiences...and advise..
Hi lads/lasses, Swans fan here, I found this site through www.planetswans.co.uk after one of our lot posted this article. I'm coming to the opening game and cannot wait as yours is a ground I have never been to. In response to DA9, the last game we took this kind of following to was Bury about 4 seasons ago, where if memory serves me correctly we were allocated 1/2 their stadium due to us being able to clinch promotion if results went our way. There were at least 5,000 Jacks there that day. We do have a small mindless following, but that can be said about most clubs, and more often than not there will be no trouble. I'm not looking forward to the journey down, 6 of us making the trip, but I have heard so many different opinions of the best way to get to Charlton that my head is in a spin. I can guarantee one thing though - we will make a noise at your place.

your best bet i reckon is to go round the M25 to the A2, then take it into London. Turn off at the Greenwich / Charlton turnoff, head towards Charlton, then once you get within a mile of the ground try and find some street parking in a side road. Ticketing / towing away is active, so be careful where you park.
[cite]Posted By: Land_Of_My_Fathers[/cite]No, I'll be drinking. One of my mates is.
LOL....
M4 - M25 via Croydon/Gatwick (ie, the south side of the M25) and exit Junction 2 for the A2 towards London, Greenwich exit towards woolwich just before Blackwall Tunnel and follow signs to the ground.
From the A2 turning off the M25, about 25 - 30 minutes.
Our plan was to leave the M25 at Junction 3 and head towards Charlton that way, my missus has relatives who live in Eltham, my mother-in-law used to live near Greenwich and watched a few Charlton games when she was young, and they say this is the best route.
We do alright for away followings and we took over 3 thousand to leeds and swindon last season and sold out our allocation to many other grounds we visited as well like forest, bristol rovers, cheltenham, gillingham, brighton, orient as well as taking over 1K to many others. Not bad for a team in the first division. I wonder how well Charlton would be doing if you had to endure 20 years in the wilderness? Also our journeys are far longer than almost every other club throughout the football league with our nearest game being 100 miles away.
As for reports about our fans and their behaviour Granted we do own some right nuckleheads and they do tend to come out for high profile games. However the general feeling is that Charlton seem like a decent fan base and have been accommodating (in the main) with questions about pubs parking etc etc. I would be extremely dissapointed if there was any bother on the 9th and can't imagine there will be. London Bridge and flashpoints around the capital is another thing but I'm sure the Met have plenty of experience in dealing with much more difficult clubs than the Swans. Bring your families along and enjoy it, I know we are going to turn up openminded and you might be nicely suprised.
As for the ticket situation I'm sure there will be many swans fans in the home end it's not like it's never happened before has it? As long as the people sitting in the home end are decent supporters whats the problem? Are football fans so subhuman that someone travelling from another part of the UK can't be allowd to sit next to a local? Done it on several occasions last season and had great banter but also wouldn't dream of any disrespect by jumping around if the swans scored
Watch out for the roadworks at A2 M25 turn off it can be a nightmare at moment.......may be better coming off Orpington turn off or M20.......someone may be able to give you a better heads up mate

As an Englishman who stood and watched (and supported The Swans) 6-8 Swansea games at the Vetch between 2001-2004 I can say I have never felt so intimidated at a football match but as you say, i would not be stupid enough to talk at the games to anyone i didnt know! Probably stood in the wrong place as well!
As you say, as long as both sets of supporters respect each other and its friendly banter it should be an excellent day for everyone. Bring on the sun and 3 points to stay this side of The Severn.
Really looking forward to coming back down to Swansea, my home for three years, in the return leg as well. A return trip to Time and Envy to roll back the years!
[cite]Posted By: Land_Of_My_Fathers[/cite]Cheers, I'll look into that. If anyone can give us more info it will be appreciated.
The antigallican outside the station is a home pub so don't go in there. ;-)
Nice one from the Jacks fans.....just be wary lads as Charlton normally eject away fans sitting in home areas to avoid potential flashpoints....yes we have a few knuckleheads ourselves. Look forward to meeting some of your friendlier fans on the day.
It depends where you want to park mate. To be honest though, in terms of drinking before the game in Charlton, the Anti is your only real option in my opinion.

Junction 3 is the M20/A20, gets very busy as you head towards Eltham area, J2 is more direct.
As away fans you will have to come in through Floyd Road which is virtually opposite the station mate. The Anti is just down from Floyd Road on the cross roads on the right.
[cite]Posted By: AFKABartram[/cite]you right mate, its all too confusing.
think you're better staying at home :-)
No chance - We plan to leave early enough, so I'm sure we'll get there way before Kick Off, in time to find somewhere to park, and get a few bevvies down our necks.
WSS, why would you feel intimidated? (It's simply not true that people from Swansea eat foreign insurgents not anymore anyway, just the odd firstborn if you settle in the area)
Our crowds have gone up massivly since we moved to our out of town flatpack stadium and so far the only bother we've experienced is millwall and a little bit of aggro with the police when Leeds visited but certainly nothing like some clubs have. I don't think our arrest record is any worse than most clubs with a similar support. Most fans who will travel to the valley on the 9th will be there to support the team and generate some atmos for our team. Out of the 3.5K making the journey I can't see there being any trouble from us at the ground and I'd be extremely dissapointed if there was. I must also point out that reading the charlton boards there have been no cyber posturing either by both sets of supporters that would suggest anything other than a good day out. see you on the 9th
Just how I felt at The Vetch mate, but as you say the ground is now new and from what i understand to mates who still go regularly to the games the atmosphere has changed a lot now.
I had a great 3 years in the City, possibly the best years of my life but going to the games was not as nice as i would have hoped thats all. See you on the 9th.
print out a map and park somewhere on the 1 mile perimeter would be my advice, charlton road/shooters hill* area or the roads leading from the ground up to there. you can get most of the way on the A20 which puts you out not far from the above - the A2 and A20 pretty much converge near Kidbrooke*, sat nav might help of course.

First game of the season
On the sauce since 9 in the morning
Far more potential for trouble than Palace in my opinion.
I agree for those reasons.
Saying that, I hope they enjoy their day out in the smoke but go home empty handed and their season starts the week after ;-)
Can any Jack reading this remember the last time they took so many to an away game (barring cup matches against big clubs) in London?

Only kidding, its all yours.
Only kidding, its all yours.
If we come the route I've mentioned though, won't we be the opposite end of Charlton to where the Station is?

Sorry for the arrogance, but being a newcomer to your board, I don't know whether this is a wind up or serious advice.

I doubt if we will though ....we'll be quietly dozing in the sunshine with arms folded.
