Congrats on the marriage but I can't see why that stopped you reading Charlton Life : - )
Knew him briefly in my CIFC playing days. Always a bright and cheery person with a smile on his face and always said hello when I bumped into him on match days. Totally stunned, shocked and sadened by the news.
Sat just behind myself and "big fat pete"
Had the pleasure of his company on the coach to Blackburn, you will sing WONT YOU!!!
So we did when pitcher scored..............
You'd have known Dave straight away if you'd have seen him - the effervescent, always ebullient man that had time for everyone, worked so hard for his family, especially when his Dad had a heart attack a few years ago. A totally warm, happy-go-lucky man who we are privileged to have had as a friend. This is probably a bit bumbling for which I aplogise but he was my neighbour and a tremendous friend and the man that sorted the flag a) for Sam Bartram's staue and b) the one that make its wasy around The Valley every week. No more moaning about football for a while, eh?
What a terrible, freak, tragic accident. From reading some comments on here and on that site it seems the world really has lost "one of the good guys".
I sat just a few seats away from him, his witty comments were the highlights of every game and he always had a smile on his face.
Dave, I classed you as a friend and it won't ever be the same again without you. My thoughts and prayers are with Shelley and Daniel and all your family.
A few floral tributes are now at Barnehurst station by the ticket office and a picture of Dave with Shelley and Daniel. Nett and me are going to take a Charlton shirt down in the morning along with some flowers as he was one of the most passionate supporters we have ever had, yet had the ability to somehow come up with some way of making light of it all - still can't believe it. Us locals are looking at some way of commemorating him, maybe in the form of a trophy between all the establishments where he would "just nip in for a quick one" (and normally result in the pair of us getting home quite late with a flea in the ear waiting for us!), maybe golf, although Dave was more partial to golf machines than picking up his clubs - just loved the man to pieces.
Ian, I'm sorry for your loss mate-I barely knew Dave but the circumstances surrounding his passing and the fact that he had a young family has left me feeling cold, so I can't imagine what you're going through. Or his family for that matter. Any kind of collections or the like, please let me know.
Dave played for CIFC on more than a few occasions - he was, as everyone here has said a happy-go-lucky character - who smiled in adversity & playing in defence for CIFC he was often knee deep in adversity! This whole saga is such a tragedy - I am the same age, with kids the same age - it brings it home how fine a thread binds us to this earth.
posted by Dave's widow Shelley on the Newsshopper site. It brings a tear to your eye :
'These messages are so comforting thank you. Dave did a crazy thing for me and Daniel and it cost him his life. I have lost my best friend and the love of my life. Daniel has lost a fantastic Daddy. To those of you who have not met Daniel he is just like Dave, beautiful, funny and mildly irritatiing. Dave was amazing he had a huge amount of energy and his wit was incredible. I have stories of Dave that make me cry with laughter. There is now a huge void in our lives Thank you for all your messages, Dave will be loving the limelight.
I know his last wishes and they are - "Celebrate his life and no to sad faces."
Dave I love you with all my heart - at night now Daniel and I kiss first then we have a kiss and a hug for you". Forever with me. Shelley.'
Passed Barnehurst station this afternoon and read the cards amongst the flowers (and the CAFC shirt). The most emotional card (apart from the family ones) is from a person who said that he/she was there when the accident happened and tried to call out to stop Dave going back to the train but couldn't get the words out in time. The card ends "I'M SORRY I DIDN'T STOP HIM". Absolutely heartbreaking...
We went down there today, have to admit my guilt on the Charlton shirt, but the tribute from the people that were there at the time were totally overwhelming. Spoke to Shelley today and subsequently met her at the station and first and foremost, as echoes her words from the News Shopper site, she would like to extend her thanks on behalf of her, Daniel and Dave's family for all of the tributes paid to him and wishes extended to them since his tragic death on Friday. I will post details on the site of exactly what will happen around the funeral, however she has requested that no more floral tributes be sent, however a trust fund is being set up for Daniel and I'll let you have details of that should anyone wish to make a gesture of rememberance as soon as I know them. In the meantime, thanks once again and don't stop the tributes on here as he really would love the attention, just as Mrs D said! God Bless.
Popped over the bridge when I got off my train last night just to see the tributes and have a quiet minute of reflection for Dave. I don't know Shelley or Daniel but you can see from the photo there that they were a happy, loving family. Just how they are going to cope without Dave you just can't begin to imagine. Well done with the shirt Ian, Dave would appreciate that. Please ensure you post up the details of the trust fund as I'm sure many would like to contribute in Dave's memory.

Some people have left messages on here as well. What a tragic accident.
RIP once again Dave.
Saw him at various away games, City Addicks, pub.
Cant say I knew him well but we did have a stupid cuddle that you have with strangers at football after Pringle scored the second goal at Derby 98/99.
Awful news.
Dave, I classed you as a friend and it won't ever be the same again without you. My thoughts and prayers are with Shelley and Daniel and all your family.
