For me Deano will take some serious beating. I can remember some seriously world class saves where he won games on his own. His performance up at Birmingham a few years back when he made about 6 top class saves from Dugarry and on about the 6th Dugarry just pushed him over in absolute shock! As a supporter of a team like Charlton I don't expect any of our players to be perfect if I expected that I'd support one of the top 4. So Deano's and many other players weaknesses are often forgiven without a second thought.
Sir Charlie Wright will always be my favourite - great people person, great sense of humour - won us points in many a match. Born in Scotland but capped by Hong Kong!
No better keeper on his day (except famous for his through the legs howler - but only, erm, twice).
But then he never played for us in the top flight.
Top flight keepers: Deano was the cult hero and his strength was his brilliant shot stopping ability - but his positioning and collecting crosses could be woeful.
Exactly the same could be said for Nicky Johns.
Bob Boulder was generally positionally sound and made a lot of his goalkeeping look routine, the hallmark of a great keeper. Possibly the best all round keeper in our top flight years.
Nicky Johns. Awesome keeper - if he'd been at a better club he would have played for England. Well, maybe not, cos of Shilton, but he would have been in the squad.
Bolder and Kiely were special too - both of them won us points on their own on more than one occasion.
However, the best save I've ever seen a Charlton keeper pull off has to be Petterson's against Palace at home in the nineties - the ball was almost past him, from point blank range, and he still turned it away - I remember wanting to weep with joy as he kept us from losing against them yet again.

been trying to think of who saved that since this thread started, kept coming up with mike amman (which i knew was wrong). that save defied the laws of physics.
best overall keeper for me has to be kiely.
Always liked Charlie Wright, not the greatest keeper but probably Charlton's greatest character between the sticks
Bob Bolder was consistant and gave one of the best goalkeeping performances I've ever seen at Old Trafford one new years day.
Sasa Illic - not for the play off but for the semi final at Ipswich. An Ipswich player hit a full blooded shot hit from about 25 yds and seemingly destined for the top corner. Most keepers would have been pleased to get a hand to it. Sasa caught and held it cleanly. Pure Brilliance.
No 1 = Deano - the best I have seen.
No 2 = Bolder - very safe and solid
No 3 = Johns - very agile - suspect positionally
No 4 = Wood - very reliable very few errors - made the best save I've ever seen
No 5 = Salmon - reliable and good positionally

if you include steve brown, surely steve gritts heroics* at coventry (late 80's ish) must get a mention.
*well he made 1 good save from a header but i think we lost 3-0.
did this happen? or has the 20 years alcohol abuse since started killing off the old brain cells?

Bob Bolder was consistant and gave one of the best goalkeeping performances I've ever seen at Old Trafford one new years day.
great performace that day, i think he produced an amazing reflex save from a robson or hughes header from point blank and whoever headed it already had their arms up in celebration of a goal
deano for me, the rock during those glory years , the greatest footballing memories for me as a charlton fan, not good enough for some but what i'd give to go thru those miraculous curbs years again .......
I am gonna go Bolder i loved Deano but Bob was the greatest i dont remember any errors i am sure that he made some but i was young and niave and every time he took those teeth out man i loved him
all keepers have to be mad and Bobby B was mental and agile, strong, quick, tall, confident, brave, and Hard as nails
do you think that Todd would have got away with smacking Bob Bolder like he did Deano
Best keeper - toss up between Deano and Scotty Carson, favourite John Dunn, then Derek Belloti - the nearest thing we had to Peter Bonetti - my al;l time hero
charlie wright gets my vote...not the best goalie, but in his prime, definitely the best to watch...like deano who cant reach a ball on the deck put in the corner, charlie seemed to have a problem with balls between his legs, if you excuse the pun...

In those days, the Covered End could be cruel - but with a sense of humour.
One match when Bellotti dropped a clanger, we all burst into this ditty from a chart song of the time:
"Bellotti's not Bonetti, we can tell, tell, tell ........"
Unlike today, we didn't expect our Charlton players to be perfect so we were well used to the inevitable cock-ups - after the initial frustration, we generally laughed it off.
One more time:
"Bellotti's not Bonetti, we can tell, tell, tell ........"
I guess I'm one of the few here who saw big Sam. He was a brave, fearless, giant in the goalmouth, and out of it as well as he wandered around the field in that big, itchy sweater that was worn in those days. A true legend, I'm so glad I had the chance to see him.
Toss up between Bolder and Deano, loved deano some saves he made were superb amd for a long while there his consistency was EXCELLENT....... Deano whats the score!!! Deano Deano whats the score!!! brilliant... and I shook his hand a year or so back...
As for bob well no teeth and was my first Charlton goalkeeper he was also captain when I was mascot.. brilliant....
nicky johns for me ,great bloke i remeber him shaking my hand at wembley when we played blackburn God his hands were like shovals.. then bob bolder didn't mind salmon either but deano 3rd

45 minutes of acheiving a lifetime ambition of actually playing in the Premier.
Something to tell the grandchildren in years to come - after spending virtually all his career as a lower leagues journeyman.
No better keeper on his day (except famous for his through the legs howler - but only, erm, twice).

Wish he would come back

you all know the answer to that
Now edited to include Gritty and Killer who I remember went in goal (I can't remember which game)
when i was i was a bit of a goalie so bob bolder for me as at the time i jus thought he was a monster.
deano was quality but bobby bolder for me as he was my childhood hero along with sir john of humff! Great players they were.
