Your favourite Charlton keeper of your lifetime ?

edited March 2008 in General Charlton
Just been reading a West Brom forum, and very sad to see Deano described as 'worse than a clown' and doing a worse job than most people's nan's.

Deano is my favourite Charlton keeper i have seen. Professional, reliable, he epitomised everything our club was about in our 'up years'. Single-handedly nearly drove Les Ferdinand to a nervous breakdown with some amazing displays against Spurs.

So who was you favourite keeper since you've been going ?

  • Deano is easily the best keeper I have seen play for us in my 30 years of going. In his prime he won us matches on his own and you always knew he was committed to the cause. His kicking may have been suspect, but for the most part he did what he was paid to do, keep the ball out.
  • Toss up between Deano, Bob Bolder and Steve Brown.

I have to plump for Deano though as he pulled off some magnificent saves and it coincided with the greatest part of our history.

Not sure why i liked Bob Bolder though, probably because he was the keeper when i started going.

Mike Salmon gets a mention from me as well - FIIIIIIIIISSSSHHHHHH.

    ;-)
  • Mine too is Deano.I think he was and still is a great pro.As you said AFKA he was hard working, very reliable and a great shot stopper. In my opinion the man is an absoloute legend.
  • Deano without a single doubt in my mind (since '92)

    truly one of us
  • love Deano, but I thought he looked very suspect against us...should've got to the goal and was rooted to his line at every corner.

Nicky Johns was my favourite....even more so when he coached my Sunday team after he finished playing.

Charlie Wright will always be my favorite as I saw him through a non-critical child's eys.

Sasa on that 10 game run was the best I've ever seen but Keily was the best long running keeper.

Shame to hear Deano being slagged off like that. I'm glad that Charlton fans never slag off out players or forget their years of service after a bad performance : -(
  • Deano.
  • Best - Toss up between Deano & Johns.

    Favourite - Johns
  • Tutt,Tutt,Tutt,Tutt,Tutt.
  • got to be Deano - his kicking drove me mad but the points he won us far far far outshone his mistakes.

Swindon ???at home in the championship winning season is his biggest gaffe I can think of but we had it sewn up by then anyway.

He always acknowledged the fans , showed he actually gave a toss for this club and think he still does and was generally all round a fantastic keeper. Yeah he had a weakness of coming for crosses but that was it.

  • I remember that mistake too Ledge but i must say i dont remember many more, which isn't bad considering the time he was at the club.
  • Deano...... By the prevebial country mile...
  • Nicky Johns is my favourite.

Got a treasured photo of him shaking my hand when I won the raffle at the Junior Reds Christmas Party 1985.

Goalkeeper is one position where Charlton has been blessed over my years of support.

I'm too young (not by that much!) to have seen Bartram and just missed Willie Duff who my Grandad said was a decent 'keeper.

The contenders for me as best of my time narrow down to Charlie Wright, Nicky Johns, Bob Bolder and Deano with honourable mentions for John Dunn, Graham Tutt, Jeff Wood Sasa Ilic and Scott Carson. The four mentioned all performed to a high standard over a number of seasons and in many ways there is little to choose between them.

However a choice has to be made and I choose Deano because he did it at the highest level the longest.

That said Nicky Johns made some unbelievable saves when our defence was not the best shall we say, Bolder almost singlehandedly kept us in division 1 and Charlie Wright was a real character as well as a damn good 'keeper.
  • Deano. Love him. Shed a tear the day he left, well would have done if I was that type.
He is Chirpy Red Jnr's all time No.1 hero. He's got a framed signed photo of him on his desk. Ahhhhhh.
  • Illc for those 10 games will be hard to beat, I remember the last day at St Andrews where he was something beyond special.

Other then that, Deano, or even Bolder
  • Agree with Sir Henry with regards to Charlie Wright for entertainment - always noted for letting the ball through his legs. And I have to mention Sasha too - he was fantastic until the bash on the head at Stamford Beach but it was his save the sent our club up to the prem so he will always be high up on the list. But I agree with the rest of ya in that the best keeper has to be deano (apart from his kicking).
  • [cite]Posted By: KenTred[/cite]Favourite is John Dunn. Entertainer.

    Best. Nicky Johns

I thought Charlie Wright was more of an entertainer than John Dunn. Agree with you about Nicky Johns, though.
  • My favorite is Willie Duff, not the best keeper in the world but a personality with a temper that always made him entertaining to watch during the days when Charlton were ALWAYS entertaining!

The best - over a short period has to be Sasha Ilic, over a career I agree with Len that there's nothing between Wright, Johns, Bolder and Deano

The best of the lot - Bob Bolder
  • The best was Deano but my favourite was Bobby Bolder.

  • No one has mentioned the all time great Sam Bartram........Len Glover where are you?

Len did mention that he was too young to have seen him (just).

    Pay attention!
  • best, in my opinion, Nicky Johns.
  • Nicky Johns
  • Probably Deano but my greatest EVER keeper is Perry Suckling !!!
  • What about Perry Sutcliffe?

    ;-)
  • Ilic. made me laugh sometimes
  • Nicky Johns for me with Bob Bolder & Deano fighting out the also ran positions.
  • Deano is my favourite Charlton keeper i have seen. Professional, reliable, he epitomised everything our club was about in our 'up years'.

    ......

Worth repeating, Deano was a great keeper for us, and probably the best I've seen, certainly over a long career, but the reaction of the West Brom fans is why it was the right decision to let him go when we did.
  • Deano. remember him flying from the air kicking the Derby player in the face. then saved the pen. then went off injured.

thats what u want though. a keeper with no front teeth. proper.
