Sis sent me a text with the news while I was out of the country and I know that perhaps I should have been, but I wasn't as shocked as I would have been say, two years ago.
I've known Peter/Reg, since before his Charlton Executive days, when he was a director of the BBSF and I managed to raise some money for them over the course of a few years.
His commitment and work ethic then were second to none, so it was no surprise to me that he continued this through his time as our Chief Executive. I interviewed him during his tenure and hope to again now he's decided to call it a day. Above all he was and is a passionate fan of the club who I always found to be honest, even if it meant that what he said might not be liked.
I admired him at the time of his appointment, for being brave enough to take on a role at the club he loved, which could easily have turned sour, (ask Les Reed) and I admire him still for having helped steer my club to places we would have only dreamed of when he started.
With all that has transpired in the last few years, perhaps a break from it all is understandable, especially if there are additional personal circumstances to consider.
Enjoy the rest, enjoy being just a fan again and thank you.
[cite]Posted By: AFKABartram[/cite]Hope everyone makes their seats ten mins before KO on Sunday to give him the round of applause his tenure has deserved.
I remember seeing him at the airport for the Boro game with £50 flights, clearly enjoying the occasion as much as the rest of us, Iwas going to go up & shake his hand but he was chatting to someone and the moment passed. Top bloke.

I actually went over and said it was great and thanked him.. tho my mates did call me a sad w*anker for doing that.
If it happened I missed it, got stuck in massive queue in the shop. Good to hear rendition of one Peter Varney. His finale was overshadowed by Chrissie Powell and somehow I suspect thats how the man would have liked it

Really not bothered if we have to lose the inspiring opera music that Pards insists on as a result !
