As Reg & Andy Gray have now both come out about their personal problems, I would like to take this opportunity to say how brave they are and that I wish them a happy life together.

I understand Henry's "Christopher Wren" point but I for one would like some kind of tangible way of thanking him for what he's done, whether it be monument, testimonial, one special match day like Curbs last match or something. What I find with the few modest, unsung hero's that I have been lucky to meet in my time is that they are often the last to realise the esteem in which they are held - this seems to be the same with Peter. It would be really nice to find a special way of thanking him. Chanting his name will help but I'd like to see something more.
Sad news. I know this has been said many times now but PV has done a fantastic job for us over the years and he will be a big loss to the club. Best of luck with whatever you're planning next Peter.

I`m starting to think block N is the Royal box of "The Covered End" I didnt realise I was in such esteemed company
[cite]Posted By: northstandsteve[/cite]I'm actually in the east of saturday with 20 screaming kids and there parents but i will happily represent block B of the east.
Agree with all said. Just like to add I was on the plane up to Blackburn with him and some fellow directors, don't know why but was amazed they sat with us fans stood in line to get on the plane and buses with everyone. Only at Charlton would that happen, any other club in the Premier League they'd be on private jets and helicopters.
Also when the Jordan/Dowie stuff hit the fan he was asked had he heard Jordans latest comments, and he replied "No I don't watch chilrdrens TV!".....classic.
I've only ever come face-to-face with PV twice and neither have been very good - which does seem at odds with what everyone else has to say.
The first was when he walked past me in Bexleyheath. I had my Charlton shirt on and I nodded at him. He looked at me, then looked away and walked on. Bit strange really, but never mind.
The second was more annoying... Can't remember the game - probably a cup tie - and I'd been queuing at the West Stand ticket office. I'd got to the counter and was halfway through the process of buying tickets when PV suddenly rocks up on my right and pushes in front of me. He puts some tickets through the slot and says to the girl 'You can resell these', and then he trots off without an 'excuse me' or anything. Seemed a bit rude, considering me and the ticket office girl were actually talking about my tickets at the time. I can't be 100% about this bit, but I think she even raised her eyebrows once he left - but I might be wrong about that bit.
Still, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and will give him a friendly cheerio. He has done a lot for the club.
NOworries, i will sure be singing his name in my part of the H block (row vv Back row) with charlton dan left behind and his crew, wss and me bro morts genius. No worries, we need to get this song going!!
I'm pleased there are so many tributes to Peter on here. I had minor dealings with him doing stuff with supporters club in Essex. But my experiences are the same as others'. He was always helpful and pleasant. I'm gutted he is leaving. I hope the personal reasons are positive reasons. We'll be lucky to get anyone as competent as PV - and be such a genuine Charlton supporter. Good luck Peter.
I'm generally a lurker here, mainly because I have had logon problems in the past.
I know Peter Varney a bit, but I certainly didn't see this coming and was a bit dazed when i checked Charlton Life, mainly to see if there was some background info on his decision. Then I saw all the 100 + contributions here, virtually all heartfelt and beautifully written testimonies. Obviously I wanted to thank him myself but I took the liberty of cutting and pasting your tributes into a file and sending it to him. I also mentioned that he might get a song on Saturday. I've just got a reply from him, and you find it below. Despite what he says, I think we should give him a song. He's probably the only modern football CEO who would have the fans singing his name at such a time, and it speaks volumes not just about him, but about the fans too. This club has a soul, and it lies deep within the Covered End

Richard,
Thank you for this - it is much appreciated.
I am genuinely moved at the contributions. The important thing on Saturday is to get behind Alan and the team from the first whistle rather than sing songs about an ageing chief executive. Please tell the bloggers that!!
My dad brought me to my first game in February 1960 and in the past 48 years I have missed 5 or 6 home matches only so my heart is very deeply enshrined in this football club and I hope to now return to my spiritual home in the north stand! I never did take up a seat in the director's box and have always sat with my family and friends in Block B of the lower west stand and I have to say we have the best fans in football. With the odd exception now and again I know all the fans around me and we share the highs and lows together and let's hope come 4th May or later we are back where we belong.
The club is in good hands - can you believe the directors have just put in another £14m - and with all that is going on in the region in the next few years we are well placed to be a big club. The future's bright the future's red!

This sums PV up for me, at what other club would anyone in his position do this? When people talk about being 'proper Charlton' please see the above.
Thanks Prague Addick it would be nice to have you post more often.I am truly gutted about this, but I would urge everybody to sing Peter's name tomorrow it's the very least he deserves.I didn't know he sat with his family and I would ask anybody he sit's near Peter tomorrow to stand up and applaud him when he takes his seat.
Comments
Theres only 1 Peter Varney
and then every home game until the end of the season
should be a song that springs up every so often also so that we can still remain loyal to what he has achieved
Agreed 100%
smudge could start it down that end ?
Mcs and that where do your lot sit?
ONE PETER VARNEY!
:-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

Didn't know the fella - but I know that he is a Charlton legend.
Thanks for everything Pete.
No singing in the East stand please. : -)
Can we have
"Peter Varney's having a party....."

And that's mainly thanks to you Peter!
Even though he says no songs - he'd secretly love it!
