just been said on Talksport again that word "personal reasons" why do people have to say that
it is like they dangle a worm and people can chomp on it and make what they want
As i said b4
well done for all your efforts and i for one will start the one Peter Vaney Chant on Saturday and would like to think i would be joined by all on here doing the same
I'd like to echo everyone's words - thanks for all the hard work Peter.
[cite]Posted By: pete_tong1[/cite]So who has been looking for the new sponsor then ?
I would presume our Commercial Director, the Chief Exec and the Chairman.

I sincerely hope it's not this, but someone in his family could be ill. Would you really want to publicise that fact if it was you?
"Personal Reasons" is never a satisfactory reason for fans in these situations, but sometimes we just have to accept they want the privacy and get on with it. If it's anything dodgy (which I seriously doubt), it'll come out in the fullness of time...
As a Chief Executive he will have been well paid for a number of years and in his mid fifties after the stress of the Dowie / Reed / Pardew saga he may have decided enough is enough.
"Personal reasons" is a meaningless term. Everybody leaves jobs for personal reasons be it career advancement, to spend more time with the wife and kids, generally pi**** off, more money or whatever.
Whatever the reason have a happy, healthy future Reg.
Nothing dodgy about Peter at all - quite simply the best man I ever had the privelege to work for and the sort of bloke that if you had any form of crisis, be it work related or otherwise, would be there for you 100%. The man has spent the last 11 years dragging Charlton forward, often in the face of untold adversity, dodging and sometimes taking bullets that should never have been aimed at him in the first place. He is a true Charlton legend and it's only now that one can start to assess quite what he drove the Club to achieve. I for one feel a little bit gutted and a trifler apprehensive, both for the Club and for those for whom I hold in similarly high regard still in situ at The Valley, as Peter has been the man that has held everything together for such a long time - to me a bit of a sad day in the Club's history, as someone who has shaped so much of it has seemingly had enough. He's only human, although when you see the times at which he clocks in and out you could even question that, but when all's said and done it is his job first and foremost, despite his love for the Club and if it means putting your family and sanity first then you can only respect his decision and appreciate quite what he has done for Charlton Athletic.
Good luck PV - that east stand will go up one day!
Great post Ian and from someone who works in the club its great to hear that his face he puts on for the media seems a very similar one to when he is around colleagues.
I've heard its a sombre mood around the offices at The Valley today but I hope that the club move forward and continue the great work that PV and many others have started. I have Mr. Murray gets a great replacement - they have some big shoes to fill.
We may call on you in a consultative manner down the years Peter if thats ok!
Very sad that Peter is leaving as he, as someone has said, been right up there with Murray and Curbs in moving the club forward over the last decade or so.
Rock spectacle has said most of what I wanted to say already and better than I could have.
Very decent, modest, extremely hard working and a life long Charlton fan who was too often the "flak catcher" and got some dogs abuse from people who thought because they were "fans" they could say anything they liked about another fan.
I would start a campaign for a Peter Varney Stand stand but knowing him a little I think it would be the last thing he would want.
In St Pauls Cathedral the tribute to its architect, Christopher Wren says "If you seek his monument look around you"
On Saturday when you take your seat at the Valley you can look around and say the same about Peter Varney.
I would also think making alot of people redundant that he has known for a very long time , all the crap he took over the "womans team" ( total bollox) and the trawling over countless spread sheets trying to make 2 +2 =8 and then geting more hit over it , he has had enough. Who could blame him ?
At the meeting next week hope he is there and he gets the thanks he deserves. If the "pot hole lady" and "Mr Womans football" are going you will know me im the one yawning ( if im in a polite mood !!).
At the recent AGM after a year when we were relegated sold loads of players, made some loyal staff redundent, lost £9m, had three managers and all the rest someone thought the most pressing question to ask the board what was being done about the potholes in the West Stand car park.
It might have been Goonhater but I'm not sure ; - )
At the recent AGM, as ever you get eccentric people, shall we say,ask somewhat irreverant (or irrelevant) questions depending upon your point of view. This time there was one bloke obsessed to the point of madness about the women's team, whilst an even crazier lady harangues the board of a plc turning over £50m or so about the pot hole in the west stand car park caused by the portacabins placed there when the north stand was being constructed and the subsequent puddles caused as a result. GH, myself and anyone else present simply glared at the tumbleweed blowing across the Millennium Lounge whilst PV tried to keep a straight face and deliver a polite response - he gets stuff like that every day!
I'd like to add my thanks to Peter and his acknowledge his achievements. Sometimes we forget how far we've come during his tenure of the Chief Execs role.
On a personal level he gave valuable help and support to myself and the rest of the group who put together the 1997 play off reunion.

I was going to write something trite but having read the above from somebody who knows him, I'll let his words speak for themselves. but just add:
Thanks Peter for everything you've done for our club we are all in your debt.
Although he wouldn't thank me for saying it, what has been said on here about PV's contribution to CAFC since October 1997 is, if anything, an understatement. I do know, however, that Peter is sensitive to what Charlton fans think of him and that one of the hardest parts of doing his job has been dealing with the nonsense thrown at him, ranging from the criticism of the barking mad to personal abuse at matches. What's been posted on here today ought to reassure him - and the rest of us - that most Charlton fans are decent, reasonable people who recognise outstanding service to the cause when they see it.
I did a piece about Peter in the Mercury just after he joined the club which commented on his phenonenal stamina and amazingly he has kept that up throughout the last ten years. It's hardly surprising that at some point he would want to get off that treadmill, but we have been exceptionally lucky to have had him in charge for the last decade, especially when you know what went on before. The club - and the fans - will miss his leadership.
Henry wot i said about the pot holes was that i thought it would be a good idea if the Fans Director addressed this problem himself.
i.e lie in the pot hole when its raining and let the fans walk over him. This would serve two things (1) stop the club geting sued by people falling down the hole (2) i think it would be good fun.
A very sad day indeed for CAFC. We've all had a moan about him at some time over the years, mostly very much undeserved I'm sure. Unfortunately that goes with the role but whatever he does in the future there's no denying the fantastic job he has done at our place and he moves on with the respect and gratitude of us all. When you look at the quality of some of the dodgy Chief Exec's and Chairman around we were privilaged to have Peter with us for such a long time.

LOL GH.
I think if you had suggested that that so and so Peter Varney would have said "great idea".
Still doesn't sort out the womens team though does it.
I couldn't believe it when I was called by my best bud with the news. Felt gutted & sad. He has always appeared to be a gentleman, a sound businessman & a credit to Charlton. This was reinforced to me up at Boro when he personally intervened to get the coaches moving after the game................crikey, I wouldn't have argued with him thats for sure!!!!
I have met a few football Chief Exec's in my time & all be it I wear red, white & black tinted glasses, he is head & shoulders above them all.
Good Luck Mr Varney & I truly hope you're taking a rest/better job/just had enough & that it isn't anything awful.
Comments
Good luck to him a great lose
I doubt very much that his pay would be the equivelent at charlton as it would be in the city etc.
Maybe he just wants to chill and get paid stupid money for a change?
For what he has done for us, i'll buy him beers for the rest of his life!

and by they i mean the announcement from the club same as Andy Gray the weekend dropped due to personal reasons
I wish Peter all the best and would know that any decision he has made would have been made for whatever he felt was right no need to explain
