Preston 'slash' prices for our visit

edited November 2007 in General Charlton
to £10 behind the goals and £12 elsewhere for adults. Can they do this and still charge us £21. Outrageous if so. Hope the Club protest.

Where did you see this Large? I thought the rules were the same for home and away but clubs do try and get around this with membership schemes.
  • on there website Ben. They also say that fans who have already bought can get a refund for the difference from the ticket office. Get onto it and sort it out. At those prices we'd double our support.
  • Preston must be running scared of stay-at-home fans & low gates because of the live TV coverage.
  • I don't believe they can do this.

Thinking about it further ...... in the light of sacking their manager, this is not even about us or losing fans to live TV coverage.
They've sacked their manager now in order to attract major media exposure before their TV match on Saturday.

This is a drum beating exercise to make a new beginning and make sure they revive the interest of the town in their football club.

They're looking for a full house at any price, to lift the energy of the club let alone the matchday atmosphere.
  • I rang them and they said it was for home fans only as a 'members' offer but I doesn't read like that on their website. If this happens then we should charge em £35 quid for the game at The Valley. Perhaps we should all ring up and buy in their home end.
  • or bombard their switchboard on 0870 442 1966

I didn't read it that way to me and they haven't told Charlton about it either as I've just rang Chris Parkes and Dave Archer and neither had been informed.

They are on the case and will be getting back to me.
  • emailed to Preston :

    To whom it may concern,

How glad I am not to support a Club like yours. You slash prices for the Charlton game, and commendably so, which is something the Board at Charlton Athletic have done on numerous occasions. One difference though. We have always included the away supporters in this promotion.

So, I hope you are happy on Saturday week when your biggest crowd of the season turn up to see the eventual Championship winners in action and your home fans can see you lose for prices of £10 and £12 for adults whilst those of us whom have travelled from South London and won’t get home till gone midnight for a game in which you will also be receiving considerable television income have the ‘privilege’ of paying £21.

    Highly commendable.

  • i have just spoken to Preston.

The offer is definately for home fans only, despite the home fans being housed in the same stand as the away fans.

    1. They say that all clubs are allowed to do up to four promotional deals a season for home fans only (this is something i am unaware of, or something they have mis-interpreted)

    2. They also say that Charlton were aware of this.

I explained that it will simply mean most people won't bother going on principal, as they feel they're being legged over.

Henry - can the two facts (1 and 2) be checked as i doubt their accuracy ?
  • Having read the website it says the lower prices re available right up to kickoff and there are NO Non Member prices.

This is an insult to our intelligence, and PNE are a disgrace.
  • i know cardiff do this on at least ocasions and have done for 4 years now, so im guessing it is allowed. but it is so unfair and i agree we should charge charlton fans £5 for the return game and give season ticket holders a £10/15 shop voucher. and charge preston fans £25 .
  • 2. is certainly not true as, as I said, I have spoken to the club secretary and the Director in charge on the ticket office and neither knew about it.

    1. I don't know the answer to that at the moment. Maybe different rules in the Football league.

In any case it is just rude to not even consult with the visiting club.

It does seem a bit of a last minute idea as they are offering discounts to their own fans who have bought already.
  • Strong words are needed from Charlton, particularly as they told me Charlton were aware of the decision which i do not believe.

Not only are they taking the piss, not only does it smack of pettyness, but i don't think what their doing is actually allowed
  • this is the sort of thing that really pisses me off. IF this price discrepancy happens perhaps we should hold up big signs saying 'We paid £21 not a tenner' to ruin their 'big' day on TV.
  • I expect it the decision to be reversed to include away fans, if not the club should certainly inform Preston that their own fans are likely to suffer when they later visit us.

In the meantime, it certainly does no harm informing Preston on 0870 442 1966 to inform of what you think of their 'fair play'

to be honest, this has made me want to go a bit more now.

21 quid and the ground is crap, 21 quid and the ground is crap
  • There is a clause in The Football League regulations which states ”Discounts or special promotions [in each case for one match only] made available to supporters of the Home Club must also be made available on a similar basis to visiting supporters provided always that each Club shall be permitted to designate four matches per season as “local promotion” matches where the Regulation shall not be deemed to apply”

It seems that this is what they are trying to do. It what way they have "designated" this game if they have not told us I not sure.
  • unfortunately we are not big enough to buy tickets in and around the ground to stuff up their plans

do you think we'd do this?
  • that's what we should threaten to do, a few calls about that should get them to reverse the decision

    And what a stupid rule.

Thing is though that they have been selling tickets for weeks at normal prices and have only now designated it a 'local promotion'. Shouldn't they have to inform the FL weeks in advance ? Sack a manager, down near the bottom, want a crowd, slash prices, everybody happy. Except the poor away fan. Think I'll copy my email to FiveLive and talksport.
  • BTW, boycott their museum.
  • has anyone who has bought a ticket actually tried to ring the number 0870 442 1966 to try and get a refund without mentioning you are Charlton...
  • I'm on it now mate, even though I'm not going I don't like things like this. Being put through to a manager now
  • Preston has confirmed it is one of their local promotions and The Football League has confirmed that they received notification. They are therefore complying with the regulations and at the moment there doens't seem to be any rules we can evoke to make them change.

I'm still hoping that they will have a change of heart if CAFC speak to them but It's in PNEs hands. I have asked for an explanation and at least an apology but I'm not holding my breath.

I'm told The Football League do not like this rule. It was voted in by the clubs 2 seasons ago. They agree that it could encourage away supporters to purchase tickets in home areas.

    Right.

Phone the number westside has just put up and ask to speak to Ben Rhodes.

It's a membership scheme open only to Preston fans. I asked if I could become a member and was told no as it's only for Preston fans. He said I had to buy my ticket through Charlton or nothing. There wasn't however much he could do to stop me turning up on the day, signing up as a member and getting a cheap ticket in the stand that we will be in as a 'home' fan.

I would recommend trying to do what Westside also suggested and not mentioning being a Charlton fan and just signing up then seeing what happens. I didn't have the self discipline to do that before I started honking at him though
  • Henry do you have an e-mail address for a contact at Preston? Or indeed the football league?

    Ta
  • the best thing we can do is get up there, support the boys, win the game and stuff it down their throats.

We usually lose when we try fancy promotions and schemes, hopefully it will be in our favour for once...
