They were all crap but he's the leader. Today he came up short. The best players should always get judged the hardest because they have a much higher ceiling.cafcnick1992 said:
Harsh to single him out. The defensive line is a collective effortSimonsen said:Lloyd Jones (who I really rate) had a nightmare. Didn't know whether to get tight to Armstrong (who was superb) or drop off. Did neither.
Men against boys....and that includes the Management.
Hopefully everyone will learn and do something about it.
He's great....probably the best CH we've had since Tel Ben Haim. Hopefully he'll learn a lot from today.0 -

I agree, they completely outplayed us. People seem to read what I wrote as Southampton aren’t a good side. What I’m saying is they didn’t play out of their skins or play in a way that couldn’t be defended against, they played some pretty simple stuff and that was enough to rip us to shreds. I met up with a load of Saints fans after the game and they said the same thing; they don’t think they played that well but still completely killed us. Barely had to try.cafcsinger said:
I enjoy your posts but I couldn’t disagree more. Yes we were poor, but they completely out played us. The little triangle, first time ball into midfield, we couldn’t handle. They had the technical ability to do that, and fair play credit to them - best team I’m seen at The Valley in a 3* years.Garrymanilow said:
Because they weren’t that good. They killed us because we were absolutely terrible. I don’t think Saints got out of second gear once today, they just ran at us, played some pretty simple triangles, moved off the ball and dropped into space. Basic stuff that we made look like prime Brazil. They gave up after the 4th goal and weren’t even really trying when they scored the 5th. We played suicidally high at the back, Lloyd Jones kept getting suckered into stepping into the space and allowing the ball to be played in behind and the wingbacks may as well not have been there. Our midfielders chased shadows and we weren’t in it. Saints play like that against a proper team and they don’t get anywhere near that resultcafcsinger said:
How on earth can you say Southampton weren’t that good? Totally bizarre - they killed us and could have been 8 nil up first half. Second half they gave up and controlled the game.Garrymanilow said:Jesus Christ. Absolute crap, the worst thing is saints weren’t even very good, we were just that bad. Second half weirdly annoyed me more than the first because Saints didn’t even bother in the second half and we came out with no urgency, no real effort and after about 5 minutes of vaguely trying we just gave up. Pathetic. In the first half I quite liked JRC but he went to pieces as the second half went on. I can see why Jones doesn’t like him. Not fit enough and not aggressive enough. Tanto was terrible and showed just how well Miles did winning his battles. Hernandez was completely absent as a LWB but weirdly put some proper challenges in as right back, more than anyone else did. We will never see Rob Apter again. It was a mistake to start both Apter and Hernandez and I don’t know if Lloyd Jones was told to step up as much as he did or if he just lost his mind but it’s the worst we’ve looked under Jones at the back since the Terrel Thomas days. Really bad, never looked like fighting back for a bit of pride. Also I’m fucking freezingYou just have to look at those goals; the first has some nice build up but in the end we’re easily beaten down the left because our LWB is off in outer space or wherever and then we lose a header in our own box. The second their striker has time to miscontrol the ball in the box and still finish. The third they play a single pass inside their own half and they’re fully in behind us and the fourth there’s another easy ball in behind. How many times has this defence been completely split open by a simple pass in behind? The defence is such a mess for that third goal it made me wonder if Appleton was back in charge for the day. We didn’t do any of the things that have served us well defensively. We were undone by simple and effective football not a team playing beyond themselves and that’s pretty gallingOne line in this says it all, they did things simple, that’s football at its best simple precise, quick passing and movement always rips teams apart especially when the finishing is good.1 -
Plenty left at 0-4 before 25 mins, loads around me walked out. By HT I reckon 3/4,000 had gonegolfaddick said:

Having a quick squiz at the player marks thread, and it looks like Kaminski's in with a reasonable shout for man of the match, which might be unexpected for a keeper that let in 5 goals in 45 minutes, but probably indicative of the sheer number of players that were having a bit of a mare today.0

1st Goal - Apter loses his man and Ramsey waits for the cross and barely jumps.
2nd Goal - Neither Doc or Carey make a challenge as the guy runs through.
3rd Goal - Ramsey plays too deep playing them on side and Carey loses his runner
4th Goal - Doc lets the guy run without any form of challenge.
5th Goal - Doc gets skinned and makes no challenge as the guy shoots1 -
That first time ball...from right back, played blind into centre midfield, was amazing in two respects; one...how well it was executed; two....how we didn't once work out it was going to happen, despite it happening on repeat throughout the first half. The 9 dog was so good at coming in to collect....turn 180 or more and open us up.cafcsinger said:

Second half we went man to man and coupled with an increase from us and drop-off from them, meant we got a sort of parity.
Hats off to them today....they made us look like willing amateurs.0 -
This. It enabled them to win all the 2nd balls we usually dominate.carly burn said:
Id go as far to say that they did so much homework on our press that they knew exactly how Campbell would be highest up and the likley positions of Doc and Cov in such a scenario. They drew us in and executed it brilliantly.golfaddick said:
And the passes were forwards & on the floor....to players in space & already on the run.carly burn said:Their third was something else. Little triangles at the back with their keeper involved. Then completely split us in two with a couple of wonderful.passes. That right there was prem league versus bang average league one.
Compared to our backwards & sideways passing to players standing still or with their backs to goal.
Look how many times they got the ball into the box....either running with it or by crossing it. Compare that to our offerings. Chalk & cheese.
Our team & current set up will only get us so far.1 -

Lloyd jones was by far not the worst player or even worst defender today. Gillesphey, as much as I’m a big fan of the bloke and his attitude (his imperious performance against Blackburn is my favourite of any player this season) - he was awful today.0

If anyone has a clip of whatever Hernandez was doing for the first goal I'd love to see it. Was like a kid was controlling him on Fifa.7

If docherty plays tuesday i will be fuming1

I think he’s just acknowledging the game between two of his ex clubs …. I’m sure he’s not excited Charlton lost 1-5 , although if he’s been getting shit on social meeeeja from our fuckwits maybe not , he never came across as a knob in the couple of times I briefly spoke with him and seemed very active with community trust work .robroy said:

I m o the team selection was wrong .. Apter is not and never will be any kind of defender, his morale must be low after being dragged off after less then 1/2 an hour .. Apter should have been up front if anywhere and Hernandez in midfield if anywhere .. having said that, the Saints as we all knew have very good players bought with loadsa parachute money and they really struck form today ..
2 words really sum it up, they were slicker and faster
Just 3 points lost, no reason to get excited (Dylan: All Along the Watchtower) we reset and start again Tuesday
However, if there is any money to spend in the New Year, we need strengthening in all departments, especially attack ..
who to go for ? .. I just don't know anyone very decent who might be affordable or even available .. no point signing players for the sake of it

Southampton were able to pass through our press without any trouble - our press left them open spaces to pass into. Swansea were able to do the same but didn't punish us. Opposition who are panicked into mistakes by our press, the percentage play pays off.
Other sides besides Southampton and Swansea have had similar spells in games, where having a bit of composure, and skill, against us can pass their way through - not that we're always punished. We're usually also strong with blocks and reacting to the ball, and can recover situations, but even that was off today, although some good saves kept the score down.
Injury hit squad for us - and maybe it's just down to that. Southampton played very well, and knew how to play us. Any periods of encouraging play by us seemed to be thwarted by the officials, not that that's any excuse. Just a bad day at the office all round.
How NJ picks up a depleted and deflated squad I do not know, but we hopefully see a reaction at Stoke.2 -
Car Crash
Bring in Anderson , to stiffen the midfield, and only have one winger.

Today showed Macca, Doc, Onel and JRC are nowhere near level two quality. It was obvious from day one. Some youngsters may or may not be up to it but they are learning. I'd go more kids. Kai, Karoy and if Bree is not near, recall Asiimwe because he is only getting splinters. Round pegs in round holes. And they are 20/21, fully developed. LCB is a problem, and unattached should be looked at.4

1. Apter isn't and never will be a wing back. if Nathan Jones wanted a wing back then he should have played the big Fijian guy.
2. NJ needs to be more flexible in how he plays two wing backs - waiting high up field for the ball that never comes when the opposition are dominating the middle of the park doesn’t work.
3.Never ever play Macca as a full back/wing back - that is just embarrassing.
4. If we cannot sign some cover at wing back in January then bring back Asiimwe - he is a better wing back than many of those already tried.
5. Docherty performance today was woeful - and I think he was dispossessed in the lead up to 3 of their goals. but that aside he failed in his role as captain to reorganise the side to adapt to what was happening - the manager cannot do everything screaming from the side line.
6. Hernandez needs to start looking for a new job in January.4 -
To be fair to the defence I don't think they have had any team come at them so quickly through our incredibly porous midfield and wing backs.MarcusH26 said:Outplayed and taught a lesson by a far better team who were quicker and sharper all over the pitch. Haven't seen us defend that poorly for a while.
Not sure really what to do for Tuesday night formation or personnel wise. Had it in my head second half to go 4231 with Bree and Ramsay as fullbacks but asking Doc to hold would be asking for trouble , but Apter-Carey-TC behind Tanto would be interesting.4 -

Nathan might also want to show a video of the game to our midfielders and attackers to show how movement and pace off the ball creates goal scoring opportunities.2

Going to say it but did not fancy Apter from the start…not athletic enough for me and too small …3
-
Saints ruthlessly exploited our lack of defensive wing backs which also expoed Macca’s lack of pace. Jones game was ineffective against a clever player like Armstrong. Nathan was outdone tactically. Needs a change of shape for next two games if Bell or Burke not back.1
-
When we eventually get players back, I think we really need to see TC as nothing other than a winger,I’m not certain he has enough about him at champ level as a winger but would happily see him succeed. I know this is formation dependent but just can’t help think we are shooting ourselves in the foot with him as a forward.would like to just see him take on players and prioritise assists.1
-
Somehow TC got the motm in the lounge , we have some fans bang on the sniff if they voted for him .
Jones was injured and limping before Knibbs came on , no idea why we didn’t just play with 10 men or change the sub move the team around , well anything , to protect Jones he shouldn’t have been on the pitch looking at the longer picture .
Soton were next level and could have scored double figures they were that dominant .
a mate had £5 on the draw at 195 to 1 I said I’ll give you double that and another clown who wasn’t at the game backed the draw with me at 300-1 …. It should have been a million to 1 the gulf in class was ridiculous .
bits I heard today , the owners been talking with Jones about what’s happening in Jan window and it kicked off in the tunnel at Wrexham after the game when their physio started giving it about the circus 🤡
Still bite your hand off for 21st in this division
