Oh also, I just don’t get the Rankin-Costello signing at all, he doesn’t even look like a footballer, think we learned today why we’ve not seen much of him, feel sorry as much as you like for Apter but if he doest’t do the job he’s being asked to do wether he likes it or not he deserves to be hooked.4

And the Lino curbs side was worse!!LargeAddick said:Not been mentioned much but by God that ref was shit. 6ft 6 & he's not had a cross into the box to attack. Set up all wrong. Use Apter/Hernandez/TC as wingers & get them slinging crosses in from the byline. And have Carey or Berry feeding off the knockdowns.LargeAddick said:
I'd agree with that. Better in second half but even in the first half at least he was trying.Athletico Charlton said:sammy391 said:Only watched the first half, and left sharply at HT!
- As others have said, Leaburn movement and tracking/chasing down just doesn't look like he's interested; not sure if that's what he has been told to do or not
- Doc was poor and looked off the pace
- Carey didnt quite keep the ball enough, but put that down to him wanting to get forward and force the point
- Coventry tried but again just fumbled the ball
- TC up against bigger and better CBs
- our football has quickly become hoofball again - rather than trying to play around and have any form of attacking intent.
- Hernandez hasnt showed anything to warrant a contract - in fact he's done quite the opposite
- felt for Apter, hadnt done too much wrong but too the fall for JRC to come on.
Just a shit day at the office, back to basics on tuesday and 'stop the rot'
Not interested... Sorry, but that is utter nonsense. For me he was one of our better players today.
I'd caveat the above with the fact I don't actually think he's good enough. We all want one of our own to succeed but I just don't see it with Miles.9 -
Because they weren’t that good. They killed us because we were absolutely terrible. I don’t think Saints got out of second gear once today, they just ran at us, played some pretty simple triangles, moved off the ball and dropped into space. Basic stuff that we made look like prime Brazil. They gave up after the 4th goal and weren’t even really trying when they scored the 5th. We played suicidally high at the back, Lloyd Jones kept getting suckered into stepping into the space and allowing the ball to be played in behind and the wingbacks may as well not have been there. Our midfielders chased shadows and we weren’t in it. Saints play like that against a proper team and they don’t get anywhere near that resultcafcsinger said:
How on earth can you say Southampton weren’t that good? Totally bizarre - they killed us and could have been 8 nil up first half. Second half they gave up and controlled the game.Garrymanilow said:Jesus Christ. Absolute crap, the worst thing is saints weren’t even very good, we were just that bad. Second half weirdly annoyed me more than the first because Saints didn’t even bother in the second half and we came out with no urgency, no real effort and after about 5 minutes of vaguely trying we just gave up. Pathetic. In the first half I quite liked JRC but he went to pieces as the second half went on. I can see why Jones doesn’t like him. Not fit enough and not aggressive enough. Tanto was terrible and showed just how well Miles did winning his battles. Hernandez was completely absent as a LWB but weirdly put some proper challenges in as right back, more than anyone else did. We will never see Rob Apter again. It was a mistake to start both Apter and Hernandez and I don’t know if Lloyd Jones was told to step up as much as he did or if he just lost his mind but it’s the worst we’ve looked under Jones at the back since the Terrel Thomas days. Really bad, never looked like fighting back for a bit of pride. Also I’m fucking freezing5 -
Crap day for sport.
November was arguably the hardest month of the season last year and I think that may well be the case again this year.
Back NJ to sort it and we’ll see a response but there’s two very tough games up next which is unfortunate. Could be staring at four losses in a row.
The goal is to not get sucked into the relegation battle by Christmas. We have to be mid table in order to attract the right players to strengthen this squad.4 -
You're right but we can blame him for being so pig-headed for not being willing to change set-up / formation and for continuously trying to put players where they don't belong.Southbank said:You cannot blame NJ for the injuries, but starting with Apter and Hernandez as wingbacks was suicidal, as me and others pointed out beforehand. After 2-0 NJ should have brought on Costello, which he did at 4 and made it harder for the 13. But too late.
As for today, a one-off or the start of a slide? Hopefully the former.1 -
Let us console ourselves with the AshesOh wait………..6

Let’s not get into over reaction this team as been playing way above there level so far this season .. but today against a ex prem team with prem players like Leicester had better quality then we did at the important times …. and this game was also more difficult given their form since new manager took over .. now us .. enough is enough now where Leaburn and Campbell are concerned contributed nothing and are way out there depth at this level .. we badly miss Kelman someone who moves the defenders about allowing our mid to move forward this is not happening defenders are having easy afternoon against these two . Carey was very poor today again perhaps playing against perm players is a step too far for him but he was at fault for 3 of the goals . Jones at fault for one and Campbell the other . The subs were strange why take Apter off Why play Costello as a right back ? .. take Campbell off put Apter as the winger .. keep Ramsey as right back keep Gilly and Jones as central but bring in Fullah who natural left sided why are we putting square pegs in round holes ??Second half was better changed to 343 Costello looked better in his proper role but other subs to late.. how was Campbell still on the pitch at the end .. he will be NJ downfall cause he letting him down every game
let’s put it down to a freak result and move on .. but NJ for the first time will be watched carefully on Tuesday what team he plays what system two defeats on the spin could be 4 before we know it … Jones and Costello were both badly limping at the end .6 -
Read whole thread. Wide range of opinions. Here are some I agree with:
- Saints were v good
- We were poor (particularly first 25)
- Mistake to start those 2 wingback
- Sorry for Apter
- Don't get too down with this low
- Back to basics next match and tighten up
- Dense 4231 a good shout with players available
COYR2 -
Ridiculous high press which their class exploited. Docherty and Carey on the six yard line at times and with wingbacks too wide and forward, and the back three too far back, poor old Coventry left to deal with the tide of Saints in that first twenty odd minutes .Complete lack of pace throughout the team. Nothing on the bench to change things either.4

Nearly jacked at half time but wanted to see how Jones responded after such a shoeing.
Hoped we might go out with a bit of intent but as predicted there was nothing there.
Go a goal down and we'll struggle to get it back. Not impossible but it will be a struggle.
Go down 2 or more and Jones really hasn't got the answers ,which is a concern.
Really felt for Apter. Jones really hung him out today..and I'm not sure he comes back from that. Turning to JRC at 4 down was also a bit of a piss take. When you need goals you may as well hoike Campbell off imo. He offers absolutely nothing. Could play until next Halloween and not trouble the goalkeeper.
This squad is thin and Jones can Ill afford resentment creeping in.5 -
If Saints weren't good then I'm left wondering what a good team looks like.Garrymanilow said:

I don't remember him putting his flag up once until Tanto came on, then he couldn't take it down. From passenger to piss taker in one substitution.Sword65pf said:

I just realised it was Saturday as have the Flu and been in bed. I go on fotmob to see who we're playing and we've already lost 1-5. A real shame but it is what it is.0

4-0 good?? Every goal involved some inexcusable play from usswordfish said:
Southampton were good, especially first half.Smithy said:Squad worth 20x ours, new manager bounce and a massive injury list so a defeat was always likely, but that performance is still completely unacceptable. They’ve scored 5 goals without even doing anything good.
Every performance since Ipswich has been poor and with Jones now seemingly injured we may be in for a very rough period. Still, in Jonesy we trust.2 -
How he missed the push on jones is beyond me, he had to be looking right at it.Stig said:

Their third was something else. Little triangles at the back with their keeper involved. Then completely split us in two with a couple of wonderful.passes. That right there was prem league versus bang average league one.5

And getting in the way of our free kick and giving them a goal kick after a blatant touch off their player for our corner, the list is endless for that div, we were so shit but he made the day shitter, awful ref and the dinlo linesman on the Curbs stand side,dogshit.Sword65pf said:

Never thought Id see a performance like that from a Nathan Jones team. Although the Southampton fans probably have.
Diabysmal.1 -
Mildly interesting (in a good way) that NJ didn’t seem to over react on the sideline today and self combust as I might have expected.I wonder however what he says / does behind the scenes over the next 3 days as I suspect it will take a lot of self control not to ‘react’.1

Ridiculous high press, especially continuing with it after the first 15 mins when we were being bypassed/overran. Only Kaminski, maybe Jones and Leaburn (for effort) coming out of the game with any credit. How was Campbell still on the pitch after 60mins today beggars belief. With all the injuries and lack of quality in depth this could be a worrying time in the run up to the new year1

I hear that CAFC are having their own version of the Ashes. As I type the goal posts are being burnt & the ashes given to NJ in an envelope......along with his P45.IAgree said:Let us console ourselves with the AshesOh wait………..0 -

Hard agree on this one. You're having one of your all-time great away days and 90% of your chants are giving pelters to an ex-manager. Pathetic.sam3110 said:Shout-out to the most boring fans in the world in Southampton btw, who all game just sung about a man who was in charge of them for all of about 7 weeks, a tiny blip in their history, but they have become so consumed by him and obsessed with him, it's all they could focus on instead of the 5-1 drubbing they were giving us, truly bizarre4 -

Compared to our backwards & sideways passing to players standing still or with their backs to goal.
Look how many times they got the ball into the box....either running with it or by crossing it. Compare that to our offerings. Chalk & cheese.
Our team & current set up will only get us so far.

I really hope today was just one of those days, not a day where our limitations have been found out for others to follow. We looked as if we desperately needed a break for an international window not as if we'd just come back from one.
Goals against had been coming and we'd got away with some poor halves/games with draws or wins, so at some point that luck would run out.
Perhaps time to try some of those who have been biding their time on the bench.0 -
Once we have been in and out of the Prem for a few seasons and can spend 20m on a CH, 20m on a keeper and god knows what else on others then we can expect to be more expansive too but we have a squad that cost us about 11m and you have to play to a way that suits what you have. Rome wasn't built in a day. A year ago we were outclassed at home by Crawley, today we were outclassed by a team in the PL last season. It is what it is, get over it.golfaddick said:

That saints team only managing to get 12 points in the prem last season shows the big gap of quality between the premier league and the championship at the moment. Can see the three newly promoted teams from this season going right back down.0
