They are each and all good enough on another day so wouldn't bother focusing too much on which player is worse than which other one. Tactics and squad depletion lost this game, to a side able to take advantage. As Steve Brown said, why press for so long, and so ineffectively, when they were cutting through it and making chances with ease.8

Had a conversation with my Mum and Dad last night about the economics of buying a NowTV month pass versus day passes as we have 4 games on this month. He phoned me up at half time to say "Thirty five quid I paid for that". I'm never going to hear the end of it, am I?17

Doc been shook since the penalty miss4

I’m 63 with a knee replacement and I think I could beat Gillesphey one on one…players just waltzing past him…Coventry and Doc not much better4

being beaten comfortably by a team full of million pound players doesn’t make us a league one side, we are a bottom half champ side who had a better than expected start. We’ll end up about where we should be 12th-18th which any of us would have bitten your hand off for at the start of the season.closet_addick said:Today it became clear that we're a League One side that has punched above their weight till this point. And that Southampton is a top Championship/shite Premier League side that has been shit till this point.

So soooo bad, i know some will want to feel sorry for Apter claim he was scapegoated but he wasnt. The whole team was shocking today but during his 30mins he was terrible and looked scared at times.0
-
A side point but why is Hernandez here?
He doesn't fit our formation and doesn't offer anything we need from the position he's being shoehorned into.
Even in the second half when it was slightly more even, he was completely invisible.13 -
I had a feeling we'd hit a bit(?) of a dip tbh with all of the injures. Just like winning by 5 goals doesn't give you any more than 3 points at least losing by the same margin doesn't drop you any more either.Unfortunately, I think that unless any of the injured players only need that extra day or so we are probably looking at a loss again Tuesday, and frankly the following Saturday as well. After that ... I think we can start getting some points in again.Nobody said it would be easy, and like everyone has pointed out, we were found out today partly by basically playing against a (bit rubbish) prem team with league one level (ish) players. By Christmas I think the "wheels will be back on" but it will be a very bumpy ride until then.At least we'll have Bree back!10

least for those there they got the rest of the afternoon to idk, try at least forget about what just happened. Plus it makes it easier for me to get a moody stream. so i also got sit through that shite.
I know our tactics were horrific, defensively too far forward and midfield not joining in on any press but those three ridiculously expensive players they have at the front were good in that first half.3 -
Apter is done…out on loan in Jan…gone in the summer6

It’s starting to mirror the last time we was in the championship isn’t it ……3

Jesus Christ. Absolute crap, the worst thing is saints weren’t even very good, we were just that bad. Second half weirdly annoyed me more than the first because Saints didn’t even bother in the second half and we came out with no urgency, no real effort and after about 5 minutes of vaguely trying we just gave up. Pathetic. In the first half I quite liked JRC but he went to pieces as the second half went on. I can see why Jones doesn’t like him. Not fit enough and not aggressive enough. Tanto was terrible and showed just how well Miles did winning his battles. Hernandez was completely absent as a LWB but weirdly put some proper challenges in as right back, more than anyone else did. We will never see Rob Apter again. It was a mistake to start both Apter and Hernandez and I don’t know if Lloyd Jones was told to step up as much as he did or if he just lost his mind but it’s the worst we’ve looked under Jones at the back since the Terrel Thomas days. Really bad, never looked like fighting back for a bit of pride. Also I’m fucking freezing2

SKY commentator saying that’s the best display he has seen all season. Southampton played well. Move on12

Bad day at the office.
It happens.
Set up wrong from the start.
Saints saw that straight away and exploited it.
Two wingers proving they are not wingbacks - in a gameplan that demands two wingbacks.
Too open and one-paced in midfield, no compactness exposing the back line.
I could go on, but most of you saw it for yourselves.
NJ saw it too. As to why he set up that way with 4 first choice defenders missing, I've no idea.
Stoke will be rubbing their hands in anticipation of Tuesday evening.
Oh, and in the immortal words of Curbs:
"Don't let the highs get too high.
Or the lows too low"

I know our tactics were horrific, defensively too far forward and midfield not joining in on any press but those three ridiculously expensive players they have at the front were good in that first half. This is key I think. The fact is there aren't that many players of that quality amongst the teams in the Champ (imo). Yes, we did make it far too easy for them, but whereas physical effort and tiring out the other team can win you points, it doesn't work all that well against actual talent. In the first few minutes, I was thinking "Saints don't really seem to go in for many tackles or put much effort in". And that of course is because they didn't have to. They have enough talent in their squad who can pick the ball up and make something (all be it we made it far too easy for them) without having to get physical.3 -
Fair enough. I agree that staying up would equal a successful campaign. But the lack of quality in the squad depth is quite apparent, I think. Even with the injuries taken into account.Covered_End_Lad said:

A bad day at the proverbial office. Hopefully the thorough arse kicking proves useful in spurring us on not to repeat such a performance any time soon. New manager bounce for an opposition whose squad costs many times ours and 2 leagues apart last year should not detract from the fact that overall we have had a decent start to life in this league. Disappointing but not unsurprising in the Championship. We need to move on and put it down to experience.3

Southampton are a better team, it's not a surprise. They will finish top 6 despite their start. Starting with Hernandez and Apter as wing backs against them was crazy. I thought Leaburn did ok.
We let in 5 and I still wouldn't want Woods their CB anywhere near our team, shocking player.
Saints fans proper salty no marks, win 5-1 and spend the 90 singing about a manager who managed them for 8 games when they were a basket case already.9 -
Greg Docherty is doing post-match media and has apologised to the #cafc fans.

"A game like today - particularly the first half - won't define our season. To be 5-0 down at one point was really hard to take.
"The overriding message is that we'll own it, front it and be better…11 -

The only slight crumb of comfort I can take is that I think, even if we had played to our absolute best, we would have lost today. We knew coming up to this level would see a real increase in the standard of opposition. The amazing thing is that what happened today hasn’t happened more often, and that’s down to how solid we’ve been this season and some
canny signings in the transfer window. Some perspective is required.8 -
Won £65 from Jones scoring today so I’m happy!3
-
Lloyd Jones injury (which he played on with), makes him a doubt for Tuesday……..IMHO.0
-
Outplayed today, hopefully a one off. Their number 18 did the same thing every time but nobody could stop him, tasty player. onto the next, free hit.1
-
Manhoef on Tuesday is going to be having a field day.0
-
I’m just gonna forget that one and move on.
As bad as we were, they oozed class and are the best side I’ve seen by a long way.
the way they played through our press so easily and their wingers were frightening.

players getting their own back on Nathan Jones for something or other. Made him look a bit of a twat to his ex side. Tuesday should be fun.0
