Manhoef on Tuesday is going to be having a field day.
Hopefully today was a kick up the arse. The boys need to turn up against Stoke, and especially Coventry, or else we'll be looking at cricket scores.

Thin squad, oppo played the best they have all season with an £80m+ squad. We go again

I cannot unsee Hernandez defending in the lead up to their 1st goal.

A calamity today. The first half was like watching a game of FIFA, where you just use the same tactic over and over to score goals against the computer.

A distinct lack of pace put paid to us today, which can be covered slightly when it's one or two players, but when the whole of their midfield, striker and wing-backs are all markedly faster than your midfield and defence, it was a glaring issue.

Hindsight is 20/20 vision, but we really could have done with more pace in general today, and playing such a high line against them didn't work, and should have been corrected at 2-0 down at the latest. Instead we waited until the game was out of reach, then inexplicably took off one of our faster players, who wasn't really at fault for any goals, to bring on a very one paced and rusty midfielder to try and shore up the defensive frailties.

All in all a very bad day at the office.

Shout-out to the most boring fans in the world in Southampton btw, who all game just sung about a man who was in charge of them for all of about 7 weeks, a tiny blip in their history, but they have become so consumed by him and obsessed with him, it's all they could focus on instead of the 5-1 drubbing they were giving us, truly bizarre

We were shit today. Luckily we only have to play 1st & 3rd away over the next week.
  • Big question is was that just one of those days with Southampton being really good or a forerunner of a very difficult rest of the season?

I veer towards the former - Southampton's movement and passing was first class in the first half and I struggle to see how anyone can say they weren't very good.

But that performance throws up a number of issues. Apter is simply not a wing back and if he can't be fitted into his proper role he will surely not be around much longer; the lack of goals from our strikers is now a joke; and we badly need some of our injured players back.

Charlton being Charlton, it wouldn't surprise me if we went to Stoke and got a result. But that is going to need a much improved performance to achieve.

Well considering my week has consisted of 5 days worth of the worst IBS ever, too many shits to mention, and being trapped for an hour at a time in the bog at work - I thought I had seen the worst of the week.

Oh no. If Carlsberg Imodium did Saturdays, this would be it.

I don't know how anybody can say Southampton weren't that good. They were excellent.

So poor from us today. Crazy to start with Hernandez and Apter as wingbacks against a team with such attacking talent. Kaminski prevented a cricket score.

I now see why Jones hasn't been giving minutes to JRC, he had a shocking second half.

Seemed like our luck run out (like ipswich missing their chances)

thought rankin costello was ok, and hernandez better right wing.

but yeah, obvious to see the gap in level!

Apter will make a good player but I don’t think it’s going to be for us he doesn’t suit our system and the recruitment behind him is mind boggling he is not a rwb he’s a pacy winger. I think he was seen as a project to replace small’s profile but he’s simply not a rwb.

Good champ players seem to be either strong and technical, or quick and technical. We still have leftovers from League One who are neither strong nor quick, and not technical either. I suppose that's to be expected, but hope we can improve in the next two windows.

Hernandez has consistently been terrible, I can see why no one wanted him. Bad decision to take off apter instead of Hernandez, both from a who’s the better player perspective and a man management perspective. Can’t imagine apter is particularly pleased with jones, even if he did shirk a tackle for one of their goals.

doc is a league one midfielder, can’t fault his character and attitude but he takes too many touches and gets caught out of position and seems slow.

Big Mac gillesphey, love the bloke and some of his performances this season but he was slow and second best to everything today.

Today showed us where we desperately need improvements in the squad. Unfortunately for our owners it’s a lot.

If Southampton don't appoint their interim as full time manager pronto they are mad. The Saints were primed and ready to exploit the Charlton set up from the off and their big money purchases all came to the party today.

The first 20 minutes saw the most complete demolition of the Addicks I have ever witnessed. They simply tore us apart. At one stage, it appeared everytime Scienza or Fellows (doing a plausible impression of Darren Anderton) got the ball, the visitors looked odds on to score.

NJ will be hard at work over the next few days trying to get the lads in some kind of shape for the visit to Stoke. If he sets up with inadequate wing backs again, and two up front who shouldn't start together, then it could be a very long hard night in the Midlands.

This month is a horrible run of fixtures, but I wasn't expecting such an awful first 25 minutes.  Soton were excellent,  probably the best they've been all season, but we were a complete shambles.

After 10 minutes I joked to someone that we needed a Kaminski injury break,  as we were being torn apart.  Players being dragged out of position,  runners not being tracked,  it was only a matter of time before we conceded. And as NJ didn't change anything until the 24th minute, we conceded 3 more.

After the change, we at least kept it a bit tighter, but that's a small consolation.

I thought Miles played pretty well in a hopeless cause. He caused their defence a few problems in the second half,  but nobody was near him to take advantage.

Strange team choice for me notwithstanding injuries albeit no one shares details of how significant they are…

Hernandez doesn’t look like a good signing. Really not very
much better than what we have and was signed out of the blue.

Leaburn has yet to do anything of note this year. I bet he’s glad he got his contract when he did.

TC continues to frustrate with no final delivery.

So nothing much new today but all very flat.

To try and be positive we ‘drew’ the second half and stopped the rot.

Not losing st Stoke would be a great sign of resolve otherwise we go in to December / Christmas on a poor trend.

Let’s hope Godden is about soon to shake it up a bit.

    PWR.

Wasn't there but watched it on Sky.

Commentators say that was the best 45 mins they've seen from any Championship team this season. And for NJ not to throw the baby out with the bathwater......which I agree.

    However........

It has been coming. Imo our set up is too negative & we really don't have any attacking threat apart from Carey. Today might have been more of a defensive issue but that was mainly due to missing 3 of our regular defenders. Cant really blame Apter or Hernandez......the blame lies solely with NJ.

I dont believe we will get relegated & should get 55-60 points.....but we wont win too many games if we continue with TC & Leaburn up front. Neither are "strikers" and we really need Godden & Kelman back.

Only watched the first half, and left sharply at HT!

    - As others have said, Leaburn movement and tracking/chasing down just doesn't look like he's interested; not sure if that's what he has been told to do or not

    - Doc was poor and looked off the pace
    - Carey didnt quite keep the ball enough, but put that down to him wanting to get forward and force the point
    - Coventry tried but again just fumbled the ball
    - TC up against bigger and better CBs
    - our football has quickly become hoofball again - rather than trying to play around and have any form of attacking intent.
    - Hernandez hasnt showed anything to warrant a contract - in fact he's done quite the opposite
    - felt for Apter, hadnt done too much wrong but too the fall for JRC to come on.

Just a shit day at the office, back to basics on tuesday and 'stop the rot'

Jesus Christ. Absolute crap, the worst thing is saints weren’t even very good, we were just that bad. Second half weirdly annoyed me more than the first because Saints didn’t even bother in the second half and we came out with no urgency, no real effort and after about 5 minutes of vaguely trying we just gave up. Pathetic...
You're definitely right about the second half, but you're doing the Saints a massive disservice saying they weren't even very good. They were very good and they cut us to shreds in the first half. Job done at half time, I fully understand why they eased up in the second half and TBH I'm glad they did.

Was like a fifa player being controlled by someone in the crowd. Maybe the electronic boards were too bright.

We have to rely on the opposition playing badly if we are going to get a result … if they bring their A game we are going to struggle.

Second half weirdly annoyed me more than the first because Saints didn’t even bother in the second half and we came out with no urgency, no real effort and after about 5 minutes of vaguely trying we just gave up. Pathetic. In the first half I quite liked JRC but he went to pieces as the second half went on. I can see why Jones doesn’t like him. Not fit enough and not aggressive enough. Tanto was terrible and showed just how well Miles did winning his battles. Hernandez was completely absent as a LWB but weirdly put some proper challenges in as right back, more than anyone else did. We will never see Rob Apter again.

It was a mistake to start both Apter and Hernandez and I don’t know if Lloyd Jones was told to step up as much as he did or if he just lost his mind but it’s the worst we’ve looked under Jones at the back since the Terrel Thomas days. Really bad, never looked like fighting back for a bit of pride. Also I’m fucking freezing
How on earth can you say Southampton weren’t that good? Totally bizarre - they killed us and could have been 8 nil up first half. Second half they gave up and controlled the game.

Jones has 3 days to figure out what he's going to do about this wing-back position, with our current injury issues, otherwise we get spanked by Stoke as well.

Midfield 3 an embarrassment as well.
Perhaps if you haven't got the players then dont play that system. Go back to a 442 and play players in their rightful positions on their "proper" foot. Pack the midfield to stop players running through us & have 2 proper strikers up top.

Thankful we only lost 5-1. When we went 4-0 down after 20 minutes any score seemed possible.

Saints outclassed us. We lack depth in our squad and our weaknesses were exposed today..

Thought he may have given fullah a half given the circumstances.

With Apter, i think jones just thinks he cant step up a level (athleticism etc)
