  • Eltham High St closing down.
  • kicking off in Wandsworth right now
  • Last night must have been the climax of these riots, musn't it?

Am I the only one who thought it would start simmering down now?
  • My sister's other half works at the Maritime. Just spoken with him as they've been told to close (the Park as well) but have to wait while they find out if it is OK to leave to come home. They've heard rumours of a gang wandering up from East Greenwich. Can't see anything on the news channels about anything current, but hope all stay safe.
  • i still think it will chunes. a lot of town centres shutting up shop as a precaution i reckon.

  • @Chunes - Have a horrible feeling it will get a lot worse before it get's better.
  • Old bill advising retailers close by 4pm tonight

I dont know many OB but i got a great text from one just now

Tactics changing the toinght it is time for law and order to be restored, they have it on good intellegance that feelings are changing in nth london and they are worried that action from public is about to turn against these scum and before that happens the ob need to react,

good luck to the boys in blue tonight got a feeling this will explode

  • Hearing rumours that Eltham will be a target tonight, no doubt partly due to 1993, locals got a mob together last night, think more will be out tonight in Eltham & New Eltham, stop these little rats smashing the place up. This is a real turning point.
  •

Oh dear, anyone else watching bbc news right now? Just interviewed some tosser of a girl

"it was free so we took it innit, its cos of da rich ppl, they got businesses theyre rich, its their fault"

    JESUS.

Yes. Drinking wine at 9.30 am - "It's good innit"

Will there be more riots tonight? "Yeah, hopefully"

"We shown da police we can do wot we want innit"

I was hoping so @Chunes.....but sadly I think these scum are now going to try their hand at taking on 16,000 police instead of 6,000. After all if they move around like they did last night the police will be playing catch-up again, and the mentality of this lot will be something along the lines of "6k or 16k it don't matter we can do what we like"

my son works there ... good thing he's not working today ... trouble is he lives in Hackney so not much better
  • Right now I feel more sad than angry.

Sad that we have such callous unthinking selfish people among us that they try to justify their theft and arson with excuses such as Stu quoted above.  Brain dead people with no pride in themselves who s*** on their own doorsteps.

Sad that the limit of their ambition is to loot JD sports for some new trainers.  No wonder they are going nowhere than, with luck, jail for a long time.  Not that looting anywhere would be in any way defensible but is that all they can imagine?

Sad that good people have lost their homes, shops, livelihoods and now in Croydon their life and MY city is being despoiled

Sad that idiots on the left like the SWP will be getting exciting about an "uprising" and that idiots on the right like the BNP/EDL will be getting hard ons about "there's gonna be a war" and how they think they will be leading it.  Neither is correct as the vast majority of decent people will back the police and back the courts when the very long sentences get handed down.  Just like with the very long sentences given out to the Student protesters the courts will come down hard.  When property gets destroyed they always do.

The butterfly of hope in this pandora's box is that something gets done.  There are no easy answers otherwise they would have been tried already.   The big stick of longer sentences and proscribing membership of street gangs (as was done with groups in Ireland) would be just part of it.  Reclaiming the streets is another but not in the way groups like the EDL and Racist Attack mean it.  It means all people, young old black white wanting to be out on the streets late at night and when they do so feeling safe.  Not just in extreme cases like the last few days but any Saturday night in any town centre.

Hope all the lifers and their families and friends are OK.

Good to hear that the Police will have 16,000 rather than 6,000 officers on the streets
  • Mate owns a salon on Lee Green, been told to shut by police as have all the shops in Lee Gate. Nothing happening there at the mo, but its a precaution.
  • Rumours that it is kicking off in Plumstead but only rumours I may add.
  • I have a German friend that lives off the Old Kent Road. Her sister, brother-in-law and niece & nephew arrived for a holiday last night at about 11pm.

    Their car got trashed,

I'm embarrasssed and ashamed. These people are visitors to our city and they get this? Some holiday this is going to be...
  • Just been up Eltham High Street. Shops all closing/closed, shutters down. Fair few police about, saw a couple of gangs loitering around as I was walking up.
  • Iwork in croydon, all sorts of rumours flying about and the shiopping centre has closed. Sparrows, where did you hear about eltham? I hope this isnt true.
  • Throw Thamesmead into the "its kicking off rumour hat".
  • Bromley high street is fine, little damage at all (Argos, Richer Sounds only ones done in) Some shops have already closed and I think the rest will be closed by 4. Quite alot of police round though on the streets

It's really really sad we are letting these type of wannabee gangster/yobs/chavs whatever you want to call them causing so much destruction and damage and we all seem scared to do anything about it.

  • Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stephen Kavanagh says plastic bullets - never used before during British disturbances - have been considered as "one of the tactics" available to officers at the riots.

"That's a tactic that will be used by the Metropolitan Police if deemed necessary," he says.

    HOORAY!!!

  • bexleyheath shopping centre now closing
  • Expect trouble in shootershill there's only a couple of shops
  • getting the feeling this is massive over-reaction
  • Just been told that Lower Belvedere has been hit including Tescos and now they are walking towards BQ can anyone confirm this as My kids are down that way staying with a friend!!
  • getting the feeling this is massive over-reaction

Have you not been watching the news then? A building in Croydon that has been there for over 140 years and survived the blitz was brought to a pile of rubble, people all over the city people are losing their businesses/cars/having their homes ransacked, can't see how it's an over-reaction at all.
  • Expecting trouble, ok lets be wary but not panicked. The looters so far have stolen from places like Currys, JD Sports, and Game, I don't see such bounty in Greenwich Park or Shooters Hill do you? Even here in Lee there is a Sainsburys and that's about it, and staff clearing away the more valuable shelves, but continuing to trade at Lee Sainsburys had a bravely sanguine attitude.

We should use a bit of (un)common sense, and figure things out carefully. On here we have a decent local network of people, and a degree of collective intelligence. Look out for each other, keep each other informed, and try not to pass on too much rumour and speculation.

BTW, if there was a good method of exposing faces to whatever cameras are around that would help a lot.

  • Nothing happening up Oxford Street, its just the norm and full of tourists.
My mum was in Eltham today, she said it was very quiet.
Nothing is happening in Lewisham right now either, my gf works central.

However police have advised shops to close early.
  • sirens galore on welling ... but don't know what's happening
  • getting the feeling this is massive over-reaction

How?  People are trying to protect themselves and their businesses and the police are advising the best way to do this is shut-up early.  There has been no indication thus far that the police are well on top of things and no-one wants to see a repeat of yesterdays events.
