Try Miles Davis' Tribute To Jack Johnson from his jazz-rock period. Billy Cobham, John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, Michael Henderson on bass.
I'll give it a go when I can clear my head again of all pre-prejudice.I only actually tried Davis on a whim after reading Charles Shaar Murray's book on Hendrix, where he cites certain career similarities.0 -
I actually prefer Jack Johnson to Bitches Brew. It really rocks. The story goes that the band had rehearsed what became the opening section one way for ages, and then Miles changed it as soon as the red light went on in the studio, which explains why Billy Cobham starts off in a straight 4/4 groove for a bar or so and then goes awkwardly into a heavy shuffle rhythm. As for Coltrane, you're probably best to wean yourself gently onto his earlier tunes, such as the sublime My Favourite Things before you move onto, say, A Love Supreme and the later-period tolerance-testing avant garde albums, such as the insane Interstellar Space (just him and Rashied Ali on drums), which I happen to like, but is guaranteed to clear most rooms like a shot. But then again I did see Sun Ra at Ronnie Scotts...
