+++ Charlton complete Thomas Kaminski signing +++

For such large wage he really doesn't add as much quality as he should. We are a club that has had some great keepers and some really naff ones. Kaminski is definitely closer to the naff6

Goalkeeper, bit like full backs / wing backs, has always been a position where you can get significantly better VFM compared with gambling big bucks on strikers. Yet imo we’ve let ourselves down here in paying handsomely for a keeper who doesn’t dominate his six yard box, let alone the area. For the proportion of the budget spent on Kaminski, I expected us to have one of the top keepers in the division. And I really don’t like the fact that he’s been relegated in the last two seasons - not the habit you want.I think we’re stuck with him though, given Jones’ Luton loyalty, and the demands to use what budget we do have to improve injury gaps (wing backs) and attacking threat.2
-
Luton and Blackburn fans were fairly unanimous when we signed him that he was good for a save of the season contender but doesn't command his box and distribution was a weakness. Think that's been proven bang on the money.3
-
Not convinced. Also not sure Mannion is the answer either.3

His wages and fee were big money for us but are a pittance in the division. You need to be paying close to £10m for a top end Championship keeper not closer to £1m. He’s fine, could be better with crosses but he’s made some decent saves too. We just forget those saves because the ball didn’t end up in the net4
-
He's like an improved version of MacGillivray and with his experience I thought we'd be getting better than that.0
-
An upgrade on mannion, seems a average mid to lower champ goalkeeper so exactly where we are to be fair.1
-
Not seeing that in Transfermarkt datafenaddick said:His wages and fee were big money for us but are a pittance in the division. Just had a look at who the top sides in this league have in terms of keepers and it's a right mix.
Carl Rushworth is on loan at Cov from Brighton but this is his 3rd loan at this level , just stuck in a keeper logjam that Brighton have.
Sol Brynn at Boro is an academy graduate who had a couple of EFL loans before breaking through
Ipswich is either Alex Palmer (injured) or Christian Walton , who are both very experienced at this level.

Transfermarkt data is largely guesswork anyway but if you want to use it here are the 5 most valulable keepers in the division based on their model. 2 of them are playing for promotion contenders, one has been talked about as the best GK in the division for 2/3 years (although having a rough season), one went into a PL campaign as a No 1 and one came through one of the best academies in the division and plays for England U21s. Beadle and maybe Bazunu are questionable there but that's what you're paying for a top end keeper

That’s their guesswork for “market value”. I’m talking actual transfer fees.fenaddick said:Transfermarkt data is largely guesswork anyway but if you want to use it here are the 5 most valulable keepers in the division based on their model. 2 of them are playing for promotion contenders, one has been talked about as the best GK in the division for 2/3 years (although having a rough season), one went into a PL campaign as a No 1 and one came through one of the best academies in the division and plays for England U21s. Which is also guesswork and is unreliable data because not every side buys a keeper each season. Cooper is probably the best example of recent times at £4m so I slightly over exagerated but my point still stands, relative to the division we didn't spend highly on Kaminski. We haven't spent Championship money on anyone yet really because Championship money is crazyWeegie Addick said:

I'm surprised Johannson is even still at this level. I know he's not perhaps had an outstanding season but I would have thought a Prem side would have looked at him , same with Cooper.0 -
I don’t really care about catching and punching as much as most people on here but my concerns with him are around low shots. I don’t really understand how last night’s one went in and it increasingly feels like if a player hits a very low shot on target that he has to dive for it’s going in. It’s becoming a bit of a problem2

Not as much guesswork -we know the transfer fee figures for Kaminski look more or less accurate. Relatively we spent a significant proportion of our budget on a “top” keeper. On paper that’s a good strategy. Unfortunately we aren’t seeing full benefit in the real world. For what we spent on him, TK should at minimum be a consistent top half performer.fenaddick said:

How? It wasn't reported anywhere bar one Turkish journalist saying it was "around £1m" but no one knows the accuracy of thatWeegie Addick said:

Stats wise, he's down the bottom of the league with -2.28 goals prevented. So he's cost us more goals than he's stopped.
Watching him, feels like his heart isn't in it. It's like Ben Watson / one last pay cheque territory.2 -
Mannion was average in L1, he’d be a disaster in the Championship. Kaminsky is a much, much better ‘keeper than anything we had last season.2
-
Excellent again last night made 2/3 important saves ….6
-
So Mannion looks more certain to play against Chelsea at least I guess ?
Opportunity for NJ to play him and possibly in the league thereafter if he ‘plays well’?0 -

The goal we conceded to Swansea was very similar, low shot in the same corner.Garrymanilow said:I don’t really care about catching and punching as much as most people on here but my concerns with him are around low shots. he seems to see things late, is that why he likes staying on his line? I can only think of a tennis example where a player stands way behind the baseline to give themselves more time to see the ball.0
-
Mannion is better at dealing with crosses and corners.
Kaminski is a better shot stopper.Summary of the pair IMO1 -
He's way down on our list of problems4
-
He’s not been as impressive as I hoped, but I’d rather we use budget to strengthen at wing back and up front first, and then elsewhere outfield if the right player comes available before we use budget on a GK.4
-
He’s not top quality but he’s kept us in some games with great saves. Think his distribution is getting better but was very poor0
-
He’s got proper wonky eyes, no wonder he can’t catch a ball0
-
Also reported that in Cawley’s Substack. Kaminski is a weird one just very inconsistent looks good in games like Middlesbrough West Brom etc and then has performances like yesterday and Stoke.fenaddick said:

Mannion was a good keeper for us last season, Kaminski has not been an improvement5
