Lions are 157-2. Both wickets to Carse. Bashir, who has also switched sides, is once again on the receiving end with figures of 0-66 off 9 overs. He went for 22 in one over.

One opener to look out for in the future is Ben McKinney - has impressed at Durham and hit 68 & 66 in this match. Bethell currently on 55* and Cox 51*.

Massive news - Hazlewood has joined Cummins  and Abbott in  missing the First Test through injury. Neser has been added to their squad.
Was just coming on to say this. Nesser added to the squad but Doggett expected to play.

    1 week!!!
    Errr....

    6 days.

    Start 2.30am Fri 21st.

Unless you are @jimmymelrose who double counts the days.
Whoops. Thought it was Friday night. Even better!

Although Hazlewood joining Cummins and Abbott is great news, we have to hope that none of the Tests prove to be bunsen burners. As things stand, we don't have a spinner and to compound things, any thoughts that we might call up Rehan Ahmed from the Lions has been dashed as he is being sent home - injured!!!

Despite all of that, we will never get a better chance to go one up in Australia. Let's hope we take it.

Pope, the man in form, out for 90 to go with his 100 in the first innings. Root made 31.

England won by 5 wickets. Brook made 19 with Stokes 15* (38) and a late thrash from Smith of 39* (22)

So, I think we've discovered three things from this game - Pope has cemented his place at number 3 in fighting Bethell off for that spot, Wood, with just 8 overs for his first game in 9 months isn't fit enough to play and Bashir hasn't done enough to justify a place in the side even if the intention was to play a spinner.

All this makes the team likely to look like this:

    Crawley
    Duckett
    Pope
    Root
    Brook
    Stokes
    Smith
    Carse
    Atkinson
    Tongue
    Archer

Wow,a huge loss - hamstring strains, as we know, are notoiiously hard to recover from quickly, and what with the 2nd test following on quickly, could they be missing both Cummins and Hazlewood for first 2?
Cricinfo suggesting that Doggett may start. So, we could have a situation later in the series of Duckett c Abbott b Doggett - not quite a Lillee c Willey b Dilley moment i suppose !
    I'll get me coat.

I've said before Pope starts these big series well and falls away. Hopefully a big one in the first test but then drop him if he fails in the 2nd! ;)

    kidding. kinda.

He did have a brilliant time here in grade cricket as a youngster including getting mentioned in Parliament he had scored so many runs. I'm hoping he has a storming series.

Agree with your 11. Would have been nice to have Wood in there but Atkinson and Carse a class too. Great to be able to unleash Wood later in the series hopefully when we are 1 up!

And it's a lot of extra workload for Starc and Boland both the wrong side of 35. Will that have an impact on their effectiveness and fitness layer in the series. These things can easily compound!

    One can hope

If we win the First Test and Hazlewood isn't fit for the next then I could see them rushing Cummins back.

And Ahmed has flown home injured so that's one alternative spinner gone from the Lions.

Interestingly, I think Green has had issues two and might not bowl if he plays?

Wonder if they'll go Labuschagne opening, Green at 3, Webster at 6 so he's the extra bowler, leaving Weatherald out.

I'd still pick Boland, Doggett (who's been in good form), Lyon, Starc and Webster to outperform our attack at home tbh but hope I'm wrong!

Tbh I hope they put Green at 3 and Marnus to open. It weakens an already fragile top order. If I was them I would drop Green if he can't bowl. He's not so good a batsman that he deserves to be there no matter what. So Webster is the all-rounder and pick the best top 3 which doesn't include him.

    Crawley
    Duckett
    Pope
    Root
    Brook
    Stokes
    Smith
    Atkinson
    Carse
    Tongue
    Archer

Same line up as AA but Atkinson ahead of Carse. As he has a Test Century.

Yeah I tend to agree but they love Green, I think they'll pick him.

One incredible stat is that, since Hazlewood made his debut 11 years ago, there has been only two Tests that both and Cummins have missed - the two-Test series against Pakistan in the UAE in 2018. Pakistan won one of those and the other was drawn. Hopefully, we can test that reliance on those two.

The all-rounder in the truest sense as he can bowl spin as well as seam as can Labuschagne but isn't in the same space in that respect as Webster as a bowler.

Was surprised Tom Haines even went with the Lions given he was in very scratchy form for the second half of the Champ, he's also never a Bazballer.

Call me a cynic (and there's absolutely nothing wrong with this because all home teams produce pitches to suit their bowlers) but there's nothing to stop Australia preparing a couple of wickets for the final couple of Tests that are certain to turn. They have a world class spinner in Lyon plus another two or three part-timers and could even accommodate another frontline spinner with two seamers plus Webster and Green. Whereas we'd be forced to use, at best, Bashir, Root and Jacks.
