The New screen was an improvement on the old one, but could it have been better?
Yes... the new long rectangular shape simply doesn't work with old footage, every clip edited into Mark Kinsella's VT montage played just before KO, would have had to be scanned to fit, some shots didn't work. The plus points were the graphics were better & the type captions were a good size for 1/2 way along the pitch, hopefully readable from top of the covered end.
However a bigger screen, formatted closer to standard TV's 16x 9 format, which are used in other stadium, would have been better surely?
I wonder if anyone at the club, did a photoshop mock-up of various screens to visual what it would look like? Surely with some imagination, a bigger 16x9 Screen, with panels around could have joined the ES & WS corner?
Both the JS new screen and white carbuncle police operation box are ill considered.
Whilst Roland is our landlord were sort of stuck from sorting out the JS end !
However its a shame that our new TV screen is too wide and not 16 x9 standard format and looks plonked into no mans land between ES + JS with a funeral black box under it......rather than well designed & 16 x9 screen with red panels to join ES & JS stands....
a proper demo + visualisations from multiple angles should have highlighted these points
The title of this thread is interesting; it’s an improved scoreboard if that is the purpose. As a big screen, the player names aren’t much bigger than before and it is unable to show good quality video footage and therefore it isn’t really what it could (should?) have been5 -
Had a complaint (from where I was sitting that it is too big)
7 -
Clear graphics but for videos not tall enough eg the into the valley film cut.0
-
I was impressed with it and how if was used yesterday. Well done to those involved.6
-
Thought it looked good and glad they covered the shite underneath it,the replay for second goal was a shambles 🤣0

I really don't understand why the club didn't just come on here and ask the experts what they should have done before designing, installing and paying for the new screen.
Because a few posters on here clearly have access to technical, structural and budgetary insight that the people paying for the screen didn't consider.21 -
Only issue is they fucked up the timings when the teams walked out3

"Please welcome your two teams onto the pitch" ....... when they've already gone to the middle and shook hands!
It felt like I was watching a dodgy feed with the sound way behind the pictures - only live and in the flesh!1 -

The normal schedule was in place...play the video, welcome onto the pitch, play RRR, but the ref didn't want to wait and walked out early. Watching the tunnel at the time, the ref seemed way ahead of the two teams who seemed to come out almost hesitantly.0 -

There were a few posters on here who had access to (widely publicly available) insight on Michael Appleton, which it appeared the people paying for his salary didn’t consider

@paulsturgess you can have "an opinion", that's fine. But when you're trying to claim it's been done on the cheap and by cowboys and other stuff like that, you're opinion quickly becomes moot7

I am normally lower CE but had 1905 tickets yesterday and we sat in West. I thought the new screen was great - and I struggled with the old one to read some of the names. Well done Charlton.4

I wasn’t actually suggesting they necessarily did it on the cheap, intention obviously good, but IMO it looks incompetently done possibly because whoever was managing it was incompetent rather than tight. It literally can’t play the whole shot of video footage… it’s such a minor thing but why pretend it’s perfect if it isn’t and why give stick to somebody merely commenting on that point!
ours is brand new… but just randomly saw this pic of the screen at Stoke yesterday, which again *appears* to be much better proportioned for the purpose it serves.🤷♂️

The new one at Valley fits the space nicely, looks good, and was installed by the same people who did Stoke’s3 -
My only issue with the big screen is spending money on stuff that isn't all that urgent whilst not fixing the basics. The family stand has essentially been down to two turnstiles for at least the last year then at one point yesterday all three were out of action, I'd rather this was dealt with first.1

We all love The Valley, but it’s hard not to feel we’re stuck in limbo when it comes to meaningful improvements. While Roland remains our landlord, real progress feels out of reach. Cheap fixtures and fittings have become the norm, the inevitable result of a freeholder unwilling to engage in sensible discussions about selling the ground.
The new screen sums it up perfectly: wrong format, awkwardly placed, and perched above a cheap black panel to hide the portaloo behind it. A symbol of a job done half-heartedly. The East Stand toilets are still wretched, with cubicles missing locks, and the Sam Bartram entrance looks tired and neglected. The list goes on. None of this takes away from the pride we feel for our club but The Valley deserves better, it feels like were stuck in a holding pattern. Here’s hoping that one day soon, our owners will buy Roland out and we can truly call The Valley ours again and give it the care and respect it richly deserves. COYA's.

I'm sick of naysayers and doom-mongers on here, usually the very vocal minority, that throw around their own opinion like it's facts and shit on everything the club does, then have the audacity to complain when someone comes along and stops them and says "hey, actually what you're shouting from the rooftops is horseshit" and then they usually go super defensive, or backtrack like crazy, but the damage has already been done.

I like it. Much better set-up, particularly for the squads, yellow cards, etc.
But the ratio clearly doesn't work for the old 4:3 videos and is a bit off for modern 16:9 ratios. But that was its first proper outing and I'm sure that kind of thing can be easily fixed by framing the action with side bars of CAFC logos or something.5 -

Would rather club focussed on playing and coaching budget as priority as they have been doing so, but it can’t help but annoy - seeing the SAFFA boys, the scandis etc and can never hear them!!!0 -
