How many times have you seen us beat the Spanners?

  • Just the two wins in 95/96.

One of my very early Charlton games was a 3-4 defeat in the first game of the season in August 1968  - a great occasion, though. Lots of defeats and draws since then. I remember standing behind the goal at The Den with my dad in 1971 (replete with my Charlton scarf - no segregation in those days), when we had recent signing Barry Endean playing at centre-forward. He had just chosen a move to us over Millwall and, as a result, he received a level of dog's abuse which was really quite something. The only comparable level I had witnessed was for one Eamon Dunphy on Boxing Day 1967 at Millwall v Bury.

The absolute nadir was in April 72, when they beat us 2-0 at the Valley with two late goals, sparking a mass pitch invasion and prolonged scenes of ugly triumphalism. That more or less sealed our fate (Blackpool administered the last rites the following Saturday), but Birmingham's win at Orient subsequently denied Millwall the promotion to the top tier which they thought was in their grasp.
  • Seen 6 wins since 1968 missed the Anglo Italian match

    And here.
  • 4 times in my lifetime. Saw 2 in person.
  • I don't think I have , seems odd but my iffy memory doesn't seem to remember the sheer excitement of a win 😕
  • Still twice - 95/96

Of the last 12 games since then, I remember some of them more than others.  The two that were the most frustrating for me were the home game in Sep 2013 that was also a 12.30 kick off.  Millwall had Steve Lomas in charge and they scored a deflected goal.  In my opinion, they were pretty poor on the day and Lomas didn’t last much longer after that result if I remember correctly.  If any of the games we’ve had with them were ones we could’ve won, that was definitely up there

The following season at home was the Tucudean chance right at the end (I think), that was also annoying.  In addition, I think our league one home game in Jan 2017 may have been the one when Bauer had his goal chalked off on the basis their keeper was fouled trying to release the ball, but he simply made a mess of it.  Goal should’ve stood.

All a bit immaterial as we really haven’t turned up for pretty much all of the last 12, but the run absolutely could’ve ended in any of those.

The Covid home defeat was such a non event given the ground was empty, I didn’t feel the frustration as much as any of the others.
  • Saw the pre season friendly when Jimmy tight shorts debuted for us but that doesn't count as a proper win so never.

Don't see it changing anytime soon unfortunately!
  • I've been to see every game we've beaten them in since I started going in 1979.

Unfortunately, that's just 4 (FOUR) games, out of 35.
    :-(

  • One. John Hendry at Upton Park.

So the only time I saw us beat them, the goal was scored by another teams player at someone else's ground.

They probably just blamed it on West Ham .....
  • To reply to a thread made in 2013 to confirm I still haven't seen us beat them is pretty embarrassing but here we go.

Should've had them at home in both 14/15 (Tucudean's miss) and 16/17 (Bauer's disallowed goal) so hopefully we've got that bit more quality/bottle about us this season to finish it off
  •  upton park 91 ish ?  snow game and at home 96, friendly 2007 ish so 4 times unless i've missed anything - the normal is a draw or a narrow / unlucky loss

Same. Good one though. Last minute curled into top corner.
  • Hopefully for the first time on the 13th. They're playing on my first dog's birthday, so hopefully Ol' Faithful shall grant us a blessing from above!
  • Zero, haven't even seen us score against them. Started going in 1996 after the last win against them, and missed the 4-4 draw in 2009 because I was at Uni....

Amazing how your mind plays tricks. 84th min and not top corner

I see the goals in our last win over Millwall were scored by Bowyer and Carl Leaburn. Would be fitting if Miles were to score in our next win over Millwall

The same three times for me too
Actually 4, there was some Anglo Italian game 2-1 at the old Den.

Hmmmm, without googling it I would suggest this is not correct.

  • Also 1-0 Upton Park. Other than that frustration and humiliation. But mainly humiliation.
  • Never and I can't make Saturday so we'll hopefully win
  • Kent cup 70s - about 3000 gate of which about 500 of them in a mob who systematically attacked any male in red from age 14 up (we know you care really). Went to all the Kent cup games which we won 1-0 If memory serves and not a dull game among them. Saw Grant score in the snow and Bowyer get sent off and the 2 -0 home win. Was convinced I was at a 2-1 mid week away win from the 60s but records prove otherwise.
God, do you you lot actually believe you're own hype? You must read the Sun and believe that too. We eat babies too. (In all my years going I've never seen a child attacked at Millwall, get a grip you drama queen!)
I've only just seen this. Yes, I am slow.

Were you there @MillwallFan ? I was, 1975 and it was impossible to open your mouth as a Charlton fan on any of the terraces without it getting filled in. It was quite an eye opener to a 15yr old kid their with mates.

I saw a bloke that I would estimate as around 40yrs old standing on the South Terrace (Now the Jimmy Seed Stand) shouting out to all that could hear him (and plenty could), that he wanted to take on all Charlton willing to take on the challenge.

I know that others have pulled you up on this more recently, as you still claim never to have seen any problems, just like my Spanner brother-in-law! Please don't dismiss our lived experiences, we have been there, bought the t-shirt and didn't enjoy it.
  • Think I saw 1 or 2 wins in the 60’s & 70’s.

Horrible memories of a 1-0 home loss by a deflected goal.
    The Tukudean last minute miss.

Think we won at wet spam, but myself & other cafc supporters got horribly bullied on the tube ride home!
  • Only the once, the 2-0 Kim Grant game at spannerville.
We went for a booze in Tropics by South Bermondsey station.  I arranged this with a customer of mine, he was a spanner and as good as gold, but was a bit tasty.  He met us in the boozer for a chat and said best not for us to come over and to certainly not say that we were Charlton ;)
We knew the score so kept our heads down and had a couple more making sure we were to do the off quite lively if his mates trundled over!

Its all urban myth we have never beaten the Spanners.
  • 1 - 0 Kent cup win at the Valley as a tennager in the 70s

the win at Upton Park -  some might remember one of ours called Simon gettting chased outside by about 30 of them and OB, nicking him , then bundling him into the back of a meat wagon and driving off. Once at a safe distance letting him out at the tube station and telling him to scarper - lucky B*******

lastly Morts in the snow - couldnt contain the smile and got jostled and barged all the way back ( I think theyd call it a squeeze) but worth it.
