We need to sort out how we operate in the final third. The defence today was shocking, however, it has been good more times than not over the past year. Focus on how we attack and how we supply the ball to strikers, change some personnel around and hopefully we can start motoring. Watford lured us into a false sense of security and we have struggled since
Really? Struggled since the Watford game? Deserved to win at Bristol City, deserved to beat Leicester. Should’ve got a point today. We didn’t play well today but let’s not rewrite history eh.

Oof, three defeats in 8 days.
  • The only striker we have at the club is Godden, and he can't get fit to play at present. All the others are average League One players, playing in the Championship, like they've won a raffle. They are trying I have no doubt, but they aren't yet up to the standard. If NJ can keep this squad up, he will have done well. It's too early to tell just where we might finish, but the goal at the beginning of the season was staying up, and it rains so. Forget quality, become tough and battle hardened and we might keep some clean sheets and pick up points. The odd goal here and there will help, but as we saw last season, other than Godden there was little to show promise when stepping up to this level.

A loss is just that. It's not time to press the defcon 5 button, but it is sobering when we've lost 3 on the trot, winning none of the last 4.

Goals are needed, but who is going to be scoring them. I like Miles and TC but have no confidence in either becoming strikers. An odd goal here and there maybe, but without Godden, the pressure is on Kelman to be our main man, and so far he's not looking likely.

NJ has now to start earning his right to say he's a championship level manager.

He's already finished in the top six with Luton as a Championship Manager, and he's never been relegated from this level in the years he's taken charge, so think he's already done that.

The step up is starting to show. Defence not as invincible and our attack finding The Championship just as challenging. We need the newbies to find their feet sooner rather than later. It’s going to be a long season I fear.

Some of the comments from the end of the match thread are brilliant. It really wasn’t dogshit or horrendous.

We lost 3-1 in the championship. The 3rd goal was as we pushed in the final stages - always a risk.

we clearly need some attention focussed on attacking threat but if Leaburn hits that under the bar in the first half it’s a different game.

We’ll lose a lot more this season, but we’ll win some as well.

Some balance and perspective will definitely help some cope with a Saturday afternoons football.
Well said mate, some reasoning in the debate.

Slow, laborious, predictable play.  Referee was also shocking in the 1st half.

We did enjoy laughing at the ‘execs’ in the QPR lounge which was essentially a glass box handing off the roof of the stand.  Bizzare stadium.

No rewriting being done. We’ve scored 2 in 4 games, haven’t looked like finishing our chances. Why did we deserve a point?

Thought our best (small) phase of play was when Campbell actually moved inside for a few minutes and played right up next to Leaburn. Led to him having that chance down the middle and nodding it down for Leaburn to shoot over.

Think we're much better with two strikers playing close to each other than Campbell receiving the ball out wide and Leaburn ending up isolated.
For this reason, id like to see Kelman and Leaburn vs Millwall

Start with 2 proper, out and out strikers in the next game.

I want TC to do well but he just isnt doing it. Yes he set up the Apter goal but until then he done nothing. A darting run without end product is worth sod all.

    A sensible post at last.

I’ve seen three games in the flesh and today on TV. We should have won the first three and you could make a case for a point today. We weren’t great today but far from comments like dogshit.

At the beginning of the season most said they’d be happy if we just stayed up this season. I have no doubt we will. Yes we need to score goals but they will come. People seem to have forgotten that 7 of today’s starting 11 had never played Championship football before this season so are still learning. The bench had 5 or 6 who have no Championship experience, maybe more? We need more Championship experience but that costs. We have recruited well but have recruited the best from League One with a smattering of experience in Bell, Burke, Kaminski.

It’s not going to be pretty this season but we need to keep faith in NJ and the team. Stay up this season, improve for the season after. Some of the criticism today is over the top. We are no longer in League One, we have left primary school and joined big school. It will take time to adjust and improve.
People are able to see the wider picture when it's further away but unable to control their emotions in the moment. The modern football fan gets every second of football beamed into their brain now and it's brought with it an incredible entitlement. You'd think based on the fact that we were crap until Christmas last season but still got promoted there would be a bit more patience but that's a thing of the past in all things football now. Players get 3 games before they're written off, managers get sacked if they lose 4 or 5 games in a row and panic sets in almost immediately. It's bleak to witness, this place can't keep careening from calm to fearing for the future of all things after every result. It's exhausting.

I posted this last week and have seen nothing to change my mind

They said in the commentary on Saturday, that we had signed players who scored something like 60 goals and had18 assists in League One last season.

Unfortunately we are in The Championship now.
  • I thought TC was absolutely shocking today. How he played a full game only NJ knows. Why was he played so centrally? The only thing he gives us is width. NJ got it tactically wrong.

Just watched the 1st half of the Millwall game if we don’t step up they will tear through us like a knife through butter. Fortunately they don’t seem to be able to score from the build up play they create

Were you asleep when Ramsay had that effort well saved by the Leicester Goalkeeper, or Leaburn hitting the bar today, its fine margins, but you cant say that they didn't look like scoring. We're creating chances, even half-chances, we're just not putting them away... The worry will come when we're not even creating anything.

However you're basing our whole ability to get points, solely off scoring goals, and no other factors... However today QPR should have been down to ten men whilst it was 1-1... Do you really think that doesnt have a huge outcome on the result?

Really feels like a case of history repeating itself from last year, where the general consensus on here was that we'd achieve nothing, because we weren't scoring enough goals. The fact we couldn't even score in the first half, became a bit of a mockery on here...

What happens with results, doesnt necessarily impact the future.

Against Millwall I would drop Carey and put Apter in his position. Drop Campbell and play Kelman alongside Leaburn. Play Ramsay as a right wing back and put Burke in the right side of a back three. Millwall are a big and aggressive team. Playing Burke will give us more of a physical presence.

Exactly that. Ramsay RWB and Burke has to be the way we go for Millwall.

We should have had a pen and them a red card.

But our resident gooner thinks referees only impact results against his team.
True. The ref was crap. I thought the quality might go up with the level but I haven't seen much of it yet.
We are obviously not paying the going rate.

Cant depend on Burkes fitness though. Would start Tanto though alongside Leaburn, 2 physical strikers is a good start.

Millwall is the " we need a response " game for sure.

Disappointing afternoon.  Slightly worrying too, as it's the first time we've looked weak at the back. Edwards, Ramsay and Bell all had their worst games of the season,  and against a lower midtable side.

Plus our setpieces today were awful. Not just the delivery,  but also their predictability. Opposition teams have worked out that Jones at the back post is dangerous.

Tuesday WAS a missed opportunity.  Not just to progress in a cup competition,  but just as importantly to get some attacking moves going. If we had scored a few goals. I'm sure we would have seen a better attacking performance today.

Yes we were going for an equaliser, but the last 5 minutes were a shambles.  Why take off Miles if you're going to go route one? Have Miles AND Jones up front,  to give 2 aerial targets.

This is how Nathan does seasons.

    1. Promising two or three games.
    2. Utter shite until Christmas.
    3. Get promoted.
His Luton teams often tended to start slow yeah. He treats 46 game seasons as a marathon with incremental improvements that see his teams come on strong by March and April. Hopefully we aren’t left waiting for a spring bounce to pull us out of trouble.

Nathan Jones unhappy about the fact Mbengue not given a second yellow for his foul on Kelman when the score was 1-1.
#cafc boss says that referee told him it wasn't penalised further due to the attack "not being in a promising position".
WTF has that got to do with things, no the ref was amateur at best, and that could be a slant on amateurism...
Not only is that a bullshit rule from the ref, it was right on the edge of the box!
    Going away from goal though...
If we are talking about the challenge on TC with about 10 mins left (on the right after Alter had been subbed) then it wasn't much of a foul in the first place. Certainly not worthy of a yellow card.

As I said on Tuesday. Jones better prove his decision to drop all the  first team players on Tuesday so they were ready for this was the right one. It wasn't. Real failure this week for Jones. On him.
Who's to say that if he played them in the cup, we wouldn't have lost 5 - 1 today.

We need to win at least 13 plus some draws to stay up. Where from.

Disappointing performance. Campbell not good enough for this level does nothing. Got mugged for the second goal and offers little. It’s a worry so many players just not on it today. Good job there is a break to reset because we need it.

We could have easily been 3 wins from 3 before today. I don’t think there’s any reason to panic and ask questions like that just yet.

He'd been booked about 10-mins beforehand (?), and brought Campbell down for another free kick... He's lucky that the Referee opted for what I'd hope was a "last warning", because others would have sent him off based off the fact that their man hadn't learned his lesson.
