Quite interested to know more about this, as I put a bit of effort into trying to find out what was behind it, but my main source was a bit less solid than I would have liked. Nevertheless this is significantly different to the story I heard. I do understand that Chelsea treat their huge number of loanees as effectively a revenue stream, with its own dedicated staff, largely ex Chelsea pros, but we have had good season long loans from them before (da Silva) and after (Maatsen) and no such complications occurred. And when he arrived I don't think Chelsea expected him to be an immediate starter, I heard they had been delighted with his progress in that short time. So asking for a "small increase in wages" seems a bit petty and not in keeping with the way they've done things, both with Charlton and other clubs. They knew we didn't have a pot to piss in back at the start of the season, too.Desmond Oulu said:

What I was told at the time was that Cooper was very impressed with him in our match against them at The Valley, followed his progress and enquired with Chelsea about the possibility of taking him on loan for the second half of the season. They offered to pay all of his wages plus a loan fee (which we were not). When it comes to loans, I’ve long been of the opinion that, as long as the number of loans a club can have is limited (which is a rule already in place), the onus should be on the lending club to cover most, if not all, of the player’s wages. Suppose lending clubs had to pick up a minimum of 75% of wages for example. This would help smaller clubs to be able to afford better players, while also discourage the big sides from hoovering up talent and loaning out 50 players every season (I’m looking at you in particular, Chelsea, Spurs, Man City) and in turn encourage young players to stay at smaller clubs to continue their development.
But it won’t ever happen, because it would require a handful of big fat selfish turkeys who hold all the power to vote for Christmas.1 -

It was a 2 year loan but the second season never happened.
A lot of the games missed were due to the roasted alleged gang rape allegations3 -

Worth remembering that had we not signed Gallagher on loan last time we were in the Championship we would have been relegated by Christmas. 100%. Awesome addition that season. But because of his obvious talent, he was soon whisked away again. But always great to get a real talent for a few months, who didn't quite fit at his home club at the time, than not have them at all.Athletico Charlton said:

But I've come round to NJ's view that we should be sending ours out to get experience that will benefit us, rather than the other way round.
However... We are now a Championship club, and if we do well before Jan, we could get 1 or 2 gems on loan for the final push.

You are right and as part of the Parker deal Chelsea agreed to extend the deal for another season, but I’m sure I remember reading he refused to come back and they had to pay us comp.wmcf123 said:

I said before I'd have taken Williams to compete at LWB.
But it's boom or bust he either knuckles down and get s back to Utd Ipswich levels or he doesn't change and falls away. From what I've read I think I think turn it around and become an asset again.

Liverpool even under Klopp alway loved to get players forward including Robertson and the sublime but slow TAA but that was no problem as Van Dijk and normally konate would cover any counter attacks with whoever was playing the 6. Van Dijk is still a great player but is making more mistakes now and Konate had a stinker last night. Against Palace the new guys were still learning and Van Dijk was a tad shaky.
As for Joe Gomez will he ever leave Liverpool other than on a free as Liverpool reward him in a year or two for his longevity ?
Charlton thought they had a good deal with the 3.5 million transfer with add-ons but the biggest money to come to CAFC would've been a decent percentage of a possible 50 million transfer at his peak but that never happened...2 -

Marc Guehi could well go to Liverpool for 35 Million now he's in the final year and Steve Parish has said their captain needs to sign a new contract or they need to sell though it could be 50% less than they could have received from Newcastle last season. Unfortunately they won the Cup so good decision by SP and the owners.0

In reality its a ridiculous sum of money for a footballer and in the mad mad world of football finances it probably is a bargain and values him more than the individual total value of perhaps 60% of EFL clubs.
