Sorry mate but there's absolutely nothing you can say that will convince me zonal marking is a good idea at our level with our capabilites
Fair enough, it could be that nearly every current professional footballer manager/set piece coach must be wrong and you are correct, but that doesn’t seem that likely.

A mix of zonal and man marking is the best way to defend a corner, which is why pretty much every team in football defends in that way.
Purely man marking is suicidal nowadays, because players can’t get away with the level of holding/grappling that was previously allowed without giving away a penalty.

What "zone" were our big men marking, because Pearson scored from between 2/3 to 3/4 towards the back post, directly in front of goal?

Our set up is Leaburn front, Mitchell middle and Gillesphey back, everyone else picks up a spare man. Watching the goal back and Mitchell and/or Gillesphey should go for the ball but don’t

The set up isn’t the problem, our defenders are the problem

I think the ability of the players is a factor. When I managed at youth level I wouldn't dream of implementing or trying to implement zonal marking. But at a professional level, even leagues one and two, it shouldn't be too hard. What it seems to come down to is a player or players not doing their jobs which can be just as problematic playing a man to man system. Maybe the physical attributes of the players contributes.

I think the big thing is Lloyd Jones is missing and we don’t have anyone else in the squad that replaces what he offers us in aerial ability. Gillesphey is tall but he is useless in the air (and at most other things tbh), Mitchell is decent in the air but he isn’t that tall.

I don’t think we concede that goal if Jones is fit, and you could probably say that for quite a few goals we’ve conceded since his injury
  • That is shocking
It is. So nothing to do with injuries, our midfield is non existent in terms of creativity. No midfielders are injured they are just not performing. I genuinely expected us to get better after Docherty was sent off and we did. A Campbell, Docherty, Anderson all offer nothing. Buck stops with Jones on this.

What zonal marking gives you is that grey area in between the zones where a player isn't sure whether to go for the ball or not which is exactly what happened on Saturday and I'm pretty sure against Exeter. On Saturday it left Small who's 5ft10 marking someone who's 6ft3. You say in a previous message it's not the system it's the players why it isn't working so why are we trying to do something that we both agree our players aren't up to. It's madness and it's cost us points definitely the last two games and probably more if I look into it. Just because something works for other clubs doesn't mean it will work for us.

What's even worse about this is that it's a inswinging corner so our "zonal defenders" should have a better run up and read of the delivery than the attacking team. So poor
  • wether you man mark, zonal or a mixture of both, you need a decent goalkeeper something AMB isn’t.

The corner was too far out for AMB to claim. He stood no chance once Pearson had a free header.

  • Hmm, I see a problem here  :#
  • apart from the CB and RB, which injured players would be first team starters? I realize we have a number of injuries but apart from the obvious 2, which injured players will make our increasingly bizarre starting line ups stronger?  Asking as I am genuinely confused.  Aren’t the majority of Jones signings fit and available? We left a half decent midfielder out of the squad on Saturday and seemed to play a left back out of position, we persist with Karoy who looked a bit lost.  I don’t get Jones, but am starting to think that the Swindon All Stars version of CAFC would give the current Luton Vets version a reasonable game.  We are in relegation form and I’m not seeing any improvement on last year and Jones stats as manager are really quite poor. Can’t wait for us to “click” which is Jones latest “wait for this thing to happen moment”, after the window, rebuilding, scoring, when we all get fit, and now “click”
  • We left our best midfielder out of the squad and there is no news of injury, so it makes no sense.
Playing Small at right back makes even less sense. Don't know if it's just me but something seems a bit off. I'll be watching tomorrow with fear in my heart.
