England squad - EURO 2024

Bellingham is not going to be playing next to rice as that would from England’s squad POV have them starting with 5 forwards. Plus he’s played just behind the striker all season and been excellent so why change your best players position. Unless there’s an injury or two this is how I think he will start:
Pickford
Walker, Maguire, Stones, Shaw
TAA, Rice
Bellingham
Saka, Kane, Foden2 -
By the sounds of it Southgate doesn't seem overly confident that Shaw will even be fit. Described him making it as 'a long shot'.
Unless given the other complete lack of LB options you take him in the hope he'll be fit by the time of say the 3rd group game. That's still 5 weeks away.0 -
Got to say, I feel for someone like Harvey Elliott as he’s been excellent. I know Jones is a different type of player but Elliott is so much better than him.8

Harvey Elliot will probably feel a bit hard done by. Thought he was mainly excellent this season0

In a final or a semi final Mbappe will up against Maguire - who is going to win that race.0

Decent right wingers worry me more given the left back issues.

For me Southgate is to naïve.

Quansah has huge potential but would certainly worry about him being ready for this year's Euros.
Southgate like a left footed left back, but if Shaw is not fit either Trippier or Gomez would be fine. Trippier has played there before for England and never let us down, while Gomez's best games for Liverpool have been at left back.0 -

Was subbed off in the 36th minute of Newcastle’s pointless friendly in Australia against Spurs.
But it’s the FA Cup replays that’s the problem..0 -
So our replay against CVPM has fucked up our chances in the Euros?0
-
The truth of the Trippier situation is that he is returning from injury and was always due to come off at the time he did.0
-
Is there anyone who should of been included or is this about right with the selection?0

Pickford
Walker / Stones / Konsa / Gomez
Rice / Gallagher
Saka / Kane / Foden4 -

33 named now tells us how many are doubtful through injury
With Shaw almost definitely crocked not selecting Ben Chilwell at this stage is lunacy
There are no other even vaguely competent left backs in that squad
Trippier has filled in previously but looked ropey
Joe Gomez fills in for Liverpool and always struggles
England's defensive weakness is bad enough without hamstringing the side with square pegs
We Charlton fans know better than anybody that defensive makeweights are inevitably deadweights
Chilwell may not be quite international standard but he is a specialist, everybody else Southgate has left himself with is a timebomb liability
With all that attacking talent some might think we'll aim to outscore the opposition but when have Southgate's teams ever played high tempo out and out attacking football?0 -
Or to play that defence1

Mitchell is the one I'm surprised isn't in as the contingency for if Shaw can't go.3 -

Nothing wrong with playing Joe Gomez at left back. Done it 15 ish times for Liverpool this season and got generally good to excellent reviews doing it. He might be able to help out Maguire a bit as well…0

Remember we got to a semi final with Ashley Young at LB0 -

The role of a full back is different now. They don’t need to be pushing high and wide all the time.
If for example Gomez was to play there, he can step in to midfield to help Rice but more likely he can come more central and allow Stones to step in and create the overload.
Most of the time we are going to have the ball more than the opposition. Having someone like Stones stepping in to the midfield because the full back has tucked in and round allows players like Bellingham and Foden to get higher up the pitch. Hurting teams in the areas they have done so well in for their clubs this season.7 -
What’s everyone’s most radical opinion on the team? Mine is that I’d start Branthwaite, I think he’s had a brilliant season. And with centre back being our weakest area I can’t see what harm it would do.1

Branthwaite is left footed, so would fit well next to Stones and help cover a right footed left back somewhat if Shaw isn't fit.1
