  • "Representatives for Alex are now looking at alternative destinations with MK Dons also interested. However Charlton are unlikely to allow the midfielder to leave to a side they see as a potential rival to promotion."

That statement seems like nonsense, especially when there are a dozen teams in L1 with a genuine chance of promotion
Yes but anyone who does sign and intends to start Gilbey to spearhead their promotion charge won’t be deemed a promotion rival.

Can someone narrow down this list to exclude anyone over the age of 25, under 6 ft and slow?

Personally off this list I'd like us to go for someone like Charlie Kelman. Young, direct, fast, good link up and good shot on him. Fails the height test, but not bad at 5 ft 9, bring on to cause panic in tired defences once Stockley's battered them, or starting where we're playing counter attack.

Lincoln will probably find it a bit presumptuous too!
  • Going to trawl through this thread & find my posts in late June/early July where I said that we were slow in getting players in & that I would be proved right yet again when we fail to assemble a squad good enough for promotion.

Shall we see where we are in May before deciding our season is over in August?!

if we don't sign a striker, garner will be going on it don't you worry
We are not signing a striker …. Let’s get that out of peoples heads .. we will sign a wide forward who can play across the three

Think it was more Gilbey did not want to move there

    🙄
  • In short, a striker is what’s wanted most, but a defender is what’s needed most.
You and Irving are top of the offenders register don’t worry about that - be in bold just above garner if it don’t happen
  • Sorry but that does show how ridiculous xG is.

I mean its great we're creating so many opportunities etc. and just need to take them.

But Burton Albion are third on that list and bottom of the whole table.

So it shows it’s important to convert them?

  • We are way ahead in XG from open play, so just need the finishing touches as so many have been saying. Get that and we will be right up there. Latest stats included btw my lad reckons..
Interesting that we are top from open play but sit 24th in set play xG.

  • It also illustrates how much better we would be doing if we had a striker who could convert.
    Sorry said the ‘s’ word!

Disagree, you need to look further into it.

Burton are 1st for open play xG against and we’re 2nd.

So what it’s suggesting is we could both be in for some high scoring games if we keep this up.
Some interesting graphics in that link. Especially the "team style comparison" shows us way out in front with Derby, Ipswich and MK Dons.

The "zones of control" are also very insightful. Their aren't many teams better than us at controlling the ball and controlling territory. Perhaps Ipswich aside who look very impressive by all metrics. It could be the year they run away with it.

But we'll wait a few more weeks to see how things change as their schedule gets harder and ours get easier.
  • If you include set pieces and xG conceded and then sort by xG for minus xG against then we have been the 10th best team in the league so far. Interestingly Barnsley and Oxford are above us so have probably been unlucky so far and Pompey quite far ahead in 1st.

It’s still probably too early to read into these things too much, as it’s still quite a small sample size. So us playing a half against 10 men can massively boost our attacking numbers but then also our opposition has probably been tougher than most other teams so that will affect it.

Swindon ranked 23rd last season in league 2 for it so it’s maybe not one of Garners strengths. Top teams now hire specialist set piece coaches but I doubt our budget can stretch to that unfortunately

We’ll have Martin on it teaching his very hard shot
  • I think he’s talking about Tyrece Simpson. Still think it’s highly unlikely we bid that much for him
  • Could also be the bloke from Salford who supposedly has now got Championship interest too.

Or it could all just be Colin waffle.
