Yes but anyone who does sign and intends to start Gilbey to spearhead their promotion charge won’t be deemed a promotion rival.killerandflash said:
"Representatives for Alex are now looking at alternative destinations with MK Dons also interested. However Charlton are unlikely to allow the midfielder to leave to a side they see as a potential rival to promotion."Scoham said:Not good if true, but could be due to other clubs being in for him. Have doubts about Ryan Whelan but even if his source is reliable it might not be the full picture.
That statement seems like nonsense, especially when there are a dozen teams in L1 with a genuine chance of promotion0 -
Personally off this list I'd like us to go for someone like Charlie Kelman. Young, direct, fast, good link up and good shot on him. Fails the height test, but not bad at 5 ft 9, bring on to cause panic in tired defences once Stockley's battered them, or starting where we're playing counter attack.Scoham said:Can someone narrow down this list to exclude anyone over the age of 25, under 6 ft and slow?

Lincoln will probably find it a bit presumptuous too!killerandflash said:

Shall we see where we are in May before deciding our season is over in August?!golfaddick said:
Going to trawl through this thread & find my posts in late June/early July where I said that we were slow in getting players in & that I would be proved right yet again when we fail to assemble a squad good enough for promotion.soapy_jones said:I have a giant "MEH!" shaped balloon all ready for the window shutting, anyone else made any special arrangements?4 -

We are not signing a striker …. Let’s get that out of peoples heads .. we will sign a wide forward who can play across the threeDOUCHER said:

You and Irving are top of the offenders register don’t worry about that - be in bold just above garner if it don’t happenBR7_addick said:
In short, a striker is what’s wanted most, but a defender is what’s needed most.Henry Irving said:

Don't know if he still is.
But a centre back has to be a priority*
* in case anyone doesn't get it saying we need a centre back as a priority is a mild leg pull of those repeating ad nauseum that we need a striker.
Of course another striker would be great, as would another defender. Everyone can see that, no one is saying it isn't.
Just some of us are phlegmatic about these things and others are less so.

We are way ahead in XG from open play, so just need the finishing touches as so many have been saying. Get that and we will be right up there. Latest stats included btw my lad reckons..16 -
Sorry but that does show how ridiculous xG is.
I mean its great we're creating so many opportunities etc. and just need to take them.
But Burton Albion are third on that list and bottom of the whole table.3 -
Disagree, you need to look further into it.ForeverAddickted said:Sorry but that does show how ridiculous xG is.

Burton are 1st for open play xG against and we’re 2nd.
So what it’s suggesting is we could both be in for some high scoring games if we keep this up.6 -
So it shows it’s important to convert them?ForeverAddickted said:Sorry but that does show how ridiculous xG is.

Would be perfect for Garnerball....7 -
Burton have also scored more goals than the teams around them at the bottom. The seven they've scored is more than Derby in 5th and Bolton in 10th.ForeverAddickted said:Sorry but that does show how ridiculous xG is.

But Burton Albion are third on that list and bottom of the whole table.
Their problem has been keeping the ball out of their own net. They have conceded 18 already, that's six more than any other team in the league.5 -
They are only ridiculous if they aren't interpreted in the way they are intended.ForeverAddickted said:Sorry but that does show how ridiculous xG is.

This is an xG statistic that doesn't:
1) include set piece xG2) include any insight into defensive play
Never mind actually being able to finish the chances you create from open play!
It's also early in the season so a very small and potentially unrepresentative lack of games in the sample.
The above are pretty fundamental variables that are going to dictate your results.
It can't be relied on conclusively to judge who is the best team but it's a pretty good insight into who is any good with the ball.6 -
Interesting that we are top from open play but sit 24th in set play xG.Pavoren007 said:

It also illustrates how much better we would be doing if we had a striker who could convert.
Sorry said the ‘s’ word!0 -
Some interesting graphics in that link. Especially the "team style comparison" shows us way out in front with Derby, Ipswich and MK Dons.Scoham said:

Burton are 1st for open play xG against and we’re 2nd.
So what it’s suggesting is we could both be in for some high scoring games if we keep this up.
The "zones of control" are also very insightful. Their aren't many teams better than us at controlling the ball and controlling territory. Perhaps Ipswich aside who look very impressive by all metrics. It could be the year they run away with it.
But we'll wait a few more weeks to see how things change as their schedule gets harder and ours get easier.0 -
If you include set pieces and xG conceded and then sort by xG for minus xG against then we have been the 10th best team in the league so far. Interestingly Barnsley and Oxford are above us so have probably been unlucky so far and Pompey quite far ahead in 1st.It’s still probably too early to read into these things too much, as it’s still quite a small sample size. So us playing a half against 10 men can massively boost our attacking numbers but then also our opposition has probably been tougher than most other teams so that will affect it.0

Swindon ranked 23rd last season in league 2 for it so it’s maybe not one of Garners strengths. Top teams now hire specialist set piece coaches but I doubt our budget can stretch to that unfortunatelyCallumcafc said:

I think he’s talking about Tyrece Simpson. Still think it’s highly unlikely we bid that much for himcharlton_hero said:0 -
Not sure if that is true or someone trying to generate an illusion of being ITK on the back of Simpson going to Huddersfield.charlton_hero said:
But if we do have £400k to spend I hope we spend £350k on the centre back and £50k on a striker.
Then everyone will be happy. 🖖9 -
Could also be the bloke from Salford who supposedly has now got Championship interest too.
Or it could all just be Colin waffle.1
