12 Feb 1938: Aston Villa's forward line: (l-r) F. Broome. Hancock, F. Shell, R.Starling and Eric Houghton.
This was Villa's first visit to the Valley and the game ended 1-1
On 16 Feb the two teams drew 2-2 at Villa Park.
On 21 April Villa won the second replay 4-1 at Highbury.

Five forwards and they only managed just one goal. They must have been shite.Henry Irving said:12 Feb 1938: Aston Villa's forward line: (l-r) F. Broome. Hancock, F. Shell, R.Starling and Eric Houghton.

Loved Shirtliff. What a hero.1
-
Great player - after the Chelsea 1-1 game we went straight to the Valley Club for player of the year (if memory serves me right). I was first to shake Shirtliff's hand as he walked through the door. He just let out a big yorkshire noise that I can't translate into words. Think Lord Melchett in Blackadder - "Mmeeerrrrrrr"
I think even he'd admit he was never quite as good looking as this print suggests...1 -
That is quality - my favourite player of all time.Amos on the wing said:

That brings back some memories.
I'm guessing the ones at the top of the East Terrace near the Sam Bartram entrance.
No roof so you got wet in the rain and the little trough at the bottom of the wall soon became full and meant you were standing in piss(never mind the splashback off the wall).
Bad as they were, I'm guessing by the amount of foliage that the pic was taken opportunistically during the exile years.
Love it.
Where have all the good times gone2 -
The toilets behind the main stand where similar to those pictured and the the other side of the wall you pissed against were back gardens can't imagine many people sat out on match days.1
-
Say what you will about those old toilets, but the advanced 'open aspect roofing' feature meant that we didn't have to suffer from clouds of smoke when pissing at half-time. Cigarette smoking was confined to the rest of the ground.6
