Wigan financial woes - up for sale again? p40

  • Interestingly I can't get any relegation odds on Wigan on Betfair or Skybet. That was yesterday, today there are no odds for anybody.

Do you think that's because they're effectively dead and buried or because the bookmaker doesn't want to take bets based on the uncertainty surrounding the application of their points production?

Last Wednesday Skybet were offering 250/1 for Wigan to be relegated. After a 3-0 win against Blackburn it would have been ‘unique’ to have a punt on them to be relegated, but they would be having the last laugh now.

There are definitely odds up on betfair, as i can see them now.

@bobmunro said the other day that bookmakers wouldn't offer odds on Wigan because of the uncertainty around the 12 point deduction, but exchanges will.
Nothing for me, promotion and top 6 odds but no relegation. They were there yesterday.

I haven't read all the posts on here .. just to say, is the bet laid in the Philippines for Wigan to be relegated common knowledge ? .. I believe that the bet was laid by Wigan's new(ish) owner
Parry denied this and said the betting thing is just a rumour. He called it "gossip" whilst seemingly forgetting that he was the one filmed talking about it!

So basically the head of the EFL has been filmed talking to a Wigan fan about something he's now admitted isn't true and is just gossip.

    Shambles.
to be fair, i think in the video he even refers to it as gossip

That's the sportsbook, you need to go to the exchange.

There is an active market on the Exchange - Wigan between 4/7 and 2/5 - but tiny liquidity.
Interestingly Wednesday are as low as 13/10 - but again no real money on offer.

Ok so no bookmakers themselves are actually offering prices then as I had stated?

Yes I just had a look at that, thin liquidity indeed.

Not sure i ever disagreed with you on this.

My original comment said "bookmakers wouldn't offer odds on Wigan because of the uncertainty around the 12 point deduction, but exchanges will"

    Betfair exchange is.

    Betfair exchange is.

I never said you did mate.

Just when you said I can see odds on betfair now, I had assumed you had referred to sportsbook because I wouldn't refer to betfair exchange as a bookmaker.

Wigan have appointed a QC in the points appeal, they could get off on the wording. They haven't missed any payments to creditors ...
Apart from the players you mean.

68 min Millwall 0 Boro 1 typical,do not see how Wigan can successfully appeal,if they won their case it would give a green light for any club in trouble to enter adminstration wipe out their debts, shaft their creditors and hey ho off we go,no harm done lads lets have another go.

If you bring in administrators doesn’t that mean you are in administration ? They are laying off employees and did not pay players. The rule is there and I cannot see anyway around it

Jeff Stelling just said he doesn't think Wigan should get a 12 point deduction and he dont think they will.

Why they have gone into administration so they should get the punishment as far as I am concerned

If Weds lose tonight and Wigan and Sheff W get 12 points deduction, Weds will be 1 point lower than Wigan

I have a lot of sympathy with Wigan in this situation, but can see a MASSIVE can of worms being opened if they don't get a penalty, and a dangerous precedent

Interesting that Wigan's next 3 games are against Barnsley, Hull & us. The way they are going they might just avoid relegation despite the 12 point penalty and our best bet to stay up might be to keep the bottom 2 at arms length and finish above at least 1 of the others.

I hate interviews like that. I wish Dan Roan had said......"but its YOUR test. YOU make the fucking rules. If you think they need beefing up then just DO IT."

    Rick Parry......

" you have to ask yourself why a Chinese businessman would want to buy a Championship club...."

Me........" Because you fucking let them you plank"

I know Dan Roan is the BBC Sports editor/lead journo, but he’s not the best to have covering football matters imo.  Everything about him screams Rugby Union, living in Fleet and participating in iron man competitions.

    Precisely.

Wigan's basis for appealing to the EFL is essentially that the EFL are a bunch of incompetent arseholes.

Perhaps the final announcement might sound something like 'the EFL examined the facts in this case and found that the EFL are a bunch of incompetent arseholes. Appeal upheld.'

Yep that's you Mr Parry, just in case, because you are a bit dim.

Wigan's 'owner' has made a statement:

"Wigan Athletic is a wonderful football club with rich history and a passionate fanbase.

We bought Wigan Athletic with the best intentions: to create a team that would get the club back into the Premier League, and I have invested more than £40million (to buy it and repay a loan to former owners the International Entertainment Corporation).

Unfortunately, the Covid-19 crisis has severely impacted people and businesses around the world - and Championship football clubs, which rely on fans coming through the turnstiles, are no exception.

This has fundamentally undermined our ability to fund Wigan Athletic and, after struggling to find a solution, in the end took the difficult decision to put the club into administration to ensure its survival.

The administrators are now doing everything they can to find a new owner who will secure the future of Wigan Athletic for the sake of the many thousands of devoted Latics fans, and the local community."

So he supposedly bought a club during a pandemic with football shut down, spent 40m, then blames Covid-19 and fans not attending games for his reason to bail out 4 weeks later?

Statement definitely written by someone who knows nothing about Wigan. Rich history, passionate fanbase, many thousands of fans.
