    I went to Bloomfield from 1955-1959 when were you there?...... bit before my time Johnny summer's.
    Mind you I doubt if Bloomfield changed much.
    Smith was the headmaster, I was there from 62-69.
    Spent 2 years in the 6th form to do 'A' level's. Kids could leave school at 14 in those days, and quite a few did. I had no desire to do a manual job, which is ironic as both my father and children have all ended up in the building trade!, but I really could not see me like the rest of the lads from the estate working in factories, working in the media, seemed so cool, and an idle'r like me it had an immediate attraction. photography, art, design, writing. And besides that when a mate's brother turned up to a party in Blackheath with 2 woman wrapped around him, and a 911 in the driveway....... and he was a graphic designer!....well, not really a hard choice was it......just think I should have been a carpenter, like my father, but of course I thought I knew best.

    Yes Tom Smith was the head when I was there too, I left at the end of the 4th year at just 15.
    I also see you worked for Morgan Grampian, I worked for over 30 years at Austin Knight advertising, we use to put a lot of classified ads in your magazines, I remember they were in Essex Street wc2 before they moved to Woolwich

    I remember my Mum and meeting up with my Gran in woolwich on a tuesday for a shopping trip and getting dragged along. Watching those pipe things in Cuffs that cashiers put the money in to sent the money elsewhere to save carrying it through the store. Freeman, Hardy and Willis what seemed like the biggest shoe shop in the world. Lyons Teahouse near to the Shakespeare where we would go for tea drunk out of cups and saucers, and a selection of cakes and if I'd behaved, a fresh cream one!!....... Its a bit much when your in your 20s, but I enjoyed it. ;)

    That would have been 'Nursing times' Mc Millian publishing yep, was the consultant art editor there for about 9 months trying to turn it around. Worked for Bob Findley @ Findley publications who were a great company in Horton Kirby, mostly ex MG staff. When I left them, went freelance to ~Dewberry publishing, who did Catering magazine, and the Financial Times Newspaper. Loved working for the FT, Daily newspaper, helped the Art Director convert the paper to DTP. MG became Miller Freeman, some of the titles are around but it was just money for me, unlike the other publications I have worked on, which I got very attached to. When Catering was sold to MG they had not paid me for the design, and I was working for the actual publisher at MG on a 'redesign' while on TTG.
    I resigned the commission, walked out and never worked for them again. Bob Findley was the complete opposite, lovely man, probably best publisher I worked for. Small world indeed.

    I think Nursing Times were in Little Essex St just of Essex St, Morgan Grampian were at the bottom of Essex St in the 60's

    Believe it or not, all these pubs this were listed in the 1944 Post Office Directory. I realise Woolwich was a garrison town and probably not much beer available, it being war-time but........

    Blimey that guy was a salesman, he could outdo Del boy.

    The stall was built up so that he was elevated above the crowd, he’d then mike himself up and put on a performance, it was true theatre. I seem to remember he had two or three runners down below and when he came to the end of his speil he’d chuck the boxes down to the runners who would deliver to the punters and collect their money. As he threw the boxes down he’d point randomly out and say ‘Young man over there, young lady over there, young man over there’ and it just seemed to whip the crowd up even more.

    I even saw him encourage the crowd to take a gamble on a mystery box once. The deal was that whatever it was it would be worth a lot more than the few quid he was charging. But, purchasers would not be allowed to open it until they got home. He sold dozens of them. A guy near me started to open his box, but the stall holder spotted him and gave him a right rollicking, reminding him of the gentleman’s agreement they had. The guy meekly resealed his box. (I was really disappointed - wished I’d bought one myself now).

    I bet there's only about ten left from that little list!
    Some great pubs from my youth and beyond.

    My aunt lived round the back of the Fox Under the Hill.

    We used to drink under age in the Alma - my mate was a regular there, including drinking with his dad. The old landlady was a bit surprised at my mate celebrating his 18th birthday there :)

    I had my first real lock in at the Plume of Feathers - I'm sure that the pub was full of coppers from Plumstead.

    The DG and Crown and Cushion were pubs we drank in when I worked in the Royal Arsenal.

    A special mention for the Earl of Chatham - a group of us took the afternoon off to drink when they introduced all day drinking. Unbelievable nowadays but it was such a big deal then,

    The Melbourne arms is still open, as are The Castle in Powis St and Plume of Feathers in Plumstead High St.

    I don't think all the pubs are on that list Alan, Elephant was there in the 50's, I used to drink in the Sussex on the corner of Maxey Road and Plumstead Road that was a big pub had a snooker table as well, where some big bets used to get laid as there was some very good snooker players got in there.
    And that is not on the list.

    Gosh. That was the pub for my dad and his mates.
    We kids used to sit on the step outside for blimmin ages with a bottle of pop and a bag of crisps with the salt in a blue twist of paper.
    All the men called that pub the 'Percy'.
    I distinctly remember going there with everybody after that Good Friday morning win 4-1 against Cardiff, when the whole world seemed glorious.
