Josh Magennis - CONFIRMED SIGNING (Two Year Deal/Undisclosed Fee, pg.5)

  • Why are people saying things like "for £100k he's worth the gamble"?

We have the money so why not spend an extra £400k and get someone half decent?

This guy won't last 5 minutes with our fans. He's not a very good player and he'll be hammered.

By the way if he signs I'll be right behind him but I just don't think he's good enough.

This division won't be all about finesse every game. Having a big lad able to put it about and allegedly run all day might just be the ticket on a Tuesday night in Oldham. We need cover for Novak at least and this bloke I think could be very effective off the bench.

£100K may not be much as a fee but £3K a week wages in the third tier sounds a lot if that BBC article is correct.

Give the guy a chance and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Disagree in the above in that he is good in the air and ideal for League one.

He is more than just a battering ram. I saw him a dozen or so times last season and as it got nearer to the Euros his fitness levels and accordingly performances improved vastly.

I would have him in the squad before Wagstaff or Green (just to start that debate off again!!) as he is a far more rounded player......

Sometimes helpful to start off with low expectations.....

(It certainly reduced the pain last season)

He won't if you and others are already writing him off.

Plus the reason we won't spend £400,000 is because we would then have to sell someone else.

Not sure why people are picking out his time at Aberdeen and measuring him against Churchinio.

    1. Magennis has had two years at Kilmarnock since where his strike rate averages out to 1 in 4. Last season he was 1 in 3. Not bad for a battering ram, he's no poacher.

    2. Church found himself in a much better Aberdeen side than Magennis was able to play in pre-2014.

To me he seems a player on the up and 100k would be a sensible investment. If only to back up Novak. You never know how good he might be.

Not sure it is these days at one of the bigger clubs in the league.

Seem to remember talk of Ajose tripling his wages. Can't imagine he was only on £1k a week at Swindon.
  • If a 3k a week figure is being mentioned and a fee of £100k I wonder if Josh is nearing the end of his contract ?

Oh I don't doubt that SOME proven players at the level command that or even more. Ajose (in theory anyway) would fall into that category with his previous goal scoring record.

My point is that would an old miser like Roland pay a 'squad' player £3K a week from scratch even if the transfer fee was cheap? He oofed Yann out the door, proven at the level, because his wages were too high allegedly and, again allegedly, tried to do the same with Solly.

I don't buy her 'we've changed our ways' line I'm afraid!
  • Kilmarnock are strapped for cash and have had a shocking pre season. He would probably not be an affordable option if he was at a more financially stable club.

Kilmarnock announced some unsustainable debt last season. With home gates of about 3.5k and very little tv money they need sources of income.

At least Josh would be used to playing in front of a small crowd!!
  • I think he's in his last year and it's clear he won't be signing again.
  • We need "another" option off the bench , we are not going get top quality players in our position. We need strength in depth and much back up than a youngster
  • The word from a Scottish friend I take to the Valley: "Shite. Big lump. Might work mind. Better than Makienok."
  • He doesn't look so bad! Looks like a Kermo type player, hold up play lay offs good in the air and has the puffed out kermo chest thing!
  • He will cause havoc. We will need a presence up top in the absence of Novak.

I like what they've done here - solving our striker and keeper problem with just a single signing.

Roland is always thinking outside of the box which is why he's a misunderstood maverick genius.

He will have to be a blimming quick runner to cover both positions!

I can hear the boo boys clearing their throats already.

Battering ram type players can and do have a place at this level though. Hopefully we'll mostly be trying to pick the lock with players like Holmes and Ajose, but if smashing down the door once in a while gets us out of this poxy division sooner rather than later then I don't care how shit it looks.

They do have a place, but ones that actually have a bit about them are normally at the top teams. Kermorgant/Burton worked great for that role because they are clever and can link up play as well as having the strength to hold off players.

Magennis has the strength but no sort of touch, clever play to bring those other players into the game so if he's on the pitch you are just hitting diagonal balls for him to run onto or just constantly whipping it into the box. He will have the crowd on his back quicker than Makienok I'm pretty sure about that.

And I completely agree with the point about "oh it's 100k who cares", that money could go towards a bigger signing or even a season long loan if we had to.

I saw Simon Church play for Wales... Is he a Northern Irish Bale or Church?

Looks more like Marcus Bent type player.

I take it you've seen him play?
  • Apologies, but don't know hot to post a link. On You Tube, there is a great rant by the Kilmarnock fan Gordon Sawers on Josh Maginnis.

Let us be honest most of us have not seen him play. I suggest we judge him if or when he signs.

Or even better judge him on how he actually plays for us.
  • Slade is the new Curbs, loves a utility man.

Yeah I watched quite a few Northern Ireland qualifiers for the Euros.

This "judge him when he plays for us" attitude happens every Summer and more often than not, the previous opinion held of a player seems to be right. Particularly remember it when people were being critical of Roger Johnson...

Judge him when he plays for us doesn't seem to translate to the boards view of the England squad either when someone new is or isn't called up. Of course you will have opinions on players and not always agree with the coach. I can't not remember him looking like a donkey the majority of the time and give him a completely new slate and assume what I've seen has been wrong.

So how a player performs for his country is indicative of how he'll play in third flight domestic football is it?
