Josh Magennis is a good professional and a decent guy. He will be sorely missed by Kilmarnock if he goes. Ironically enough I was playing golf yesterday with a Killie fan and mentioned he could be a good buy for Charlton.
He is not necessarily a great footballer, but has ability and WILL RUN ALL DAY. He has great nuisance value and has the potential to be a 'Valley' favourite. For the money mentioned, he is well worth a punt.
I can hear the boo boys clearing their throats already.
Battering ram type players can and do have a place at this level though. Hopefully we'll mostly be trying to pick the lock with players like Holmes and Ajose, but if smashing down the door once in a while gets us out of this poxy division sooner rather than later then I don't care how shit it looks.
They do have a place, but ones that actually have a bit about them are normally at the top teams. Kermorgant/Burton worked great for that role because they are clever and can link up play as well as having the strength to hold off players.
Magennis has the strength but no sort of touch, clever play to bring those other players into the game so if he's on the pitch you are just hitting diagonal balls for him to run onto or just constantly whipping it into the box. He will have the crowd on his back quicker than Makienok I'm pretty sure about that.
And I completely agree with the point about "oh it's 100k who cares", that money could go towards a bigger signing or even a season long loan if we had to.
Of whom? It's very, very easy to say the money could be spent elsewhere when you have literally every other footballer to choose from. Who could we get on a season-long loan for 100k who is better than Magennis, available for loan and willing to join us? Who can we put the money towards to sign who would fir the bill? When you have to narrow it down it's suddenly a lot harder isn't it
it's not a striker that's a priority, especially one who finds scoring somewhat difficult .. we need a D E C E N T M I D F I E L D E R or three .. strengthening there .. THAT'S where any available money needs to be spent

Has anyone else started playing Countdown with those letters?
I don't know anything about him so I did a bit of reading on the Kilmarnock site. Most people tend to agree that he wants to leave and that they should be getting around 150k - 200k for him. He's not consistent enough and is a better athlete than he is a footballer.
He can play a number of positions but is most comfortable upfront. He's not the best finisher and in general his technical ability isn't that great. One poster mentioned it takes him about 6 touches to get the ball under control.
It doesn't say much for Kilmarnock but he is apparently (despite the above) one of the better players they have. They'll miss his work rate and pace more than anything and his long throw comes in handy as well.
Annoying, that's exactly what I feared and posted on the Transfer Rumour thread.

There will be a number of targets for different positions, Lincs ....... it just so happens this is one that has been leaked at the moment. I should imagine Slade recognises the need for midfielders with energy and creativity; he'll be trying to bring in at least one asap.
Don't forget also that the club tends to go for free agent players AFTER the deadline. On the basis that leopards don't change their spots, expect a signing or 2 in September.
Give the guy a chance and you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Disagree in the above in that he is good in the air and ideal for League one.
He is more than just a battering ram. I saw him a dozen or so times last season and as it got nearer to the Euros his fitness levels and accordingly performances improved vastly.
I would have him in the squad before Wagstaff or Green (just to start that debate off again!!) as he is a far more rounded player......
Sometimes helpful to start off with low expectations.....
(It certainly reduced the pain last season)
No one rated Kermogant after his penalty miss in the play offs for Leicester. The he became a charlton hero.

I assume you told her that on Saturday.
I certainly did .. and she came out with the 'we are learning from our mistakes line' and 'assured' me that four players will be in by 31/8 .. I thought she was quite a nice young lady albeit out of her depth and there is no time for her to learn on the job .. IF we want a big outhouse size striker who can do a job for a season or 2, Matt Rhead of Lincoln is worth a look

Gillingham did a wonderful job getting Jay Emmanuel-Thomas for the season. Looks like a world beater at this level. Cracking signing. We should have made it part of the Cousins deal that we got him on loan.

That would have involved intelligent negotiation skills

He's scored a couple at this level - but I would be surprised if he maintains that. He's always looked guff whenever we have played against him and I don't think it's any different now.

I remember when he broke onto the scene years back thinking he was gonna be a big name from the hype he was getting but has never seemed to live up to his potential yet. And he's older than Shelvey now at 25 so maybe he's at his level in the second and third tiers.

Scored and did well for Bristol City at this level. Far more proven player than Bokata
