Deadline Day from Pg.641 - Summer 2025 Charlton Athletic Transfer Rumours

The last two seasons in the Championship, Godden was a one in four/five striker for an established side. He is now two years older, and currently injured with little pre-season.
I take your point on wages of our marginals making them hard to shift.
Doc didn't impress me in L1.6 -
cabbles said:I hope we can move a few on now. Taylor, Ahadme and A Mitchell probably won’t get a look in. What a very strong squad we have. I think it’s been mentioned on here before, that we’re not building a first XI plus adequate back up/cover, we’re building a squad where by X is as good as X and it shouldn’t matter who starts. For example, Apter/TC or Godden/Kelman.Got a feeling Tanto will start first game, as will Carey and Apter. After that, not sure which of the newbies will feature - I’m working on the basis Kaminski is not fit. I thought I read somewhere he’s injured
Kaminski injured??! Thats a massive blow if true. Didn't he play against Ipswich?0 -

Heart always rules the head when it comes to your football club.
But when you boil it down, we have a lot of players unproven at the level. Even a couple that didn't cut it when last here.
This was just a bit of a sobering outside view.
One of the hosts,George Elek is an Oxford fan. He said they followed a similar path when they went up. Cherry picking some of the best league one had to offer. Fair few of them turned out no too great in the champ.6 -
Before the season started I said I thought we needed 10 players in, if we were going to have a chance of survival.
We’re up to 9 so far, can we squeeze another couple more in the dressing room, before the window slams shut?2 -
I think one more will come in for sure( not itk) and if a great loan becomes available then who knows.
Rwb cover needed though.
Outs need to be Ahadme, Taylor and one of Mannion or AMB. Maybe A.mitchell aswell if Zach stays.

I'm firmly in the camp that this transfer window has given us a solid chance of survival — and honestly, I think it's a bit mad for anyone to be looking much further than that right now.43

Really does doesn't it. Knibbs will be fuming if thats trueSam_777 said:This whole saga reeks of Reading playing silly buggers at the last minute & moving the goalposts.
If Knibbs makes it clear he wants to go and his agent puts pressure on Reading they might yet come to their senses and get the deal done.
Considering how many games he's played the last few years I never believed it was because of a failed medical8 -

100% agree. To suggest we'll do better than survival at this point is pure speculation, guess work and feeling a bit giddy from a good window.scabbyhorse said:I'm firmly in the camp that this transfer window has given us a solid chance of survival — and honestly, I think it's a bit mad for anyone to be looking much further than that right now.The club have given NJ a great base to build on. That’s it so far for me until proven otherwise. None of our ‘star’ signings have played at this level consistently before10 -
Goalscorers like Godden don't rely on pace, so unsure why people keep using age against him. Once he's up and running, he will be a big part of our squad.Gisappointed said:The last two seasons in the Championship, Godden was a one in four/five striker for an established side. Nah bollocks I’m getting giddy about it, mid table I reckon maybe just above. With the feel good factor round the club, the new signings, the momentum and Nathan Jones we’re in for a good season.6

Definitely a bit harsh on godden even at 34 he'd be a handy player to have around the team to start a few or come on last 30 mins etc ,a guy who literally a few months ago was a our top scorer.26

We couldn't ask for more then getting three top League 1 forwards in Tanto, Kelman and Knibbs. Intrigued by who Oxford signed because I genuinely don't know but I would be surprised if they matched those acquisitions.carly burn said:

Kelman's experience and profile means he probably has the biggest question mark for me. We also have Godden in that position and Leaburn obviously has potential. Between them I'm confident we'll find a way.
There's no guarantees in football but we're in a much better position than when we last got into this league.12 -
Just had a Quick Look at Oxford signings from last season and they’re nothing like what we’ve brought in, I usually really rate the nt20 podcast but thought they got a few things wrong on the latest podcast, although I’d take 19th for us I think we’ll do better.Charlton and on said:

I don’t think we’ll get relegated. I think we’ve had a really great window and NJ has strengthened nearly everywhere needed so far.
I think the best way to react to a team getting promoted is to strengthen in your weakest positions and keep your better players from last year and I think we’ve done that in Knibbs, Kelman, Kaminski. Etc.
I think people worrying about TC are barking up the wrong tree - it was Doherty, Berry, up front and GK that urgently needed improving and we have.6 -

The likes are Doc, Godden and Berry are model pros who would understand they might get more limited game time this season. Can't see them pushing to leave, they'd just knuckle down and do their bit for the team whenever asked.Gisappointed said:I think outs are going to be our next business. Tipped by many, AMB, A Mitchell, Ahadme, Kanu, Taylor. Either loan or perm, some are worth a fee to L1 but doubt we will get one. A few kids to go on loan, but I can see players like Doc, Berry and Godden being unhappy at being down the pecking order and wanting a move. Fullah will get more game time than them. Nominal fees but doubt we will be too bothered. Perhaps a further clear-out in January if others are not up to the mark. I can also see us getting another under the radar forward. Tovide?9 -
FYI - The delay wasn’t down to Reading playing silly buggers. The real reason doesn’t matter anymore, but nothing to do with Reading or medical.blackpool72 said:

Talk of Godden departing is fickle at best.
Do not expect him to have the same goal return as last season, double figures would be an achievement, but that's not all he brings to the table.
His nous, experience and dogged determination will be invaluable over 46 games, both on and off the pitch.

This window is such an improvement on our last 2 after we were promoted from lge 1. Yes over half of the new signings have not played at champ level before so we're relying on them making the step up. But we now have competition for places and a squad that can hopefully cope with injuries.
Contrast this with Bowyer's and SCP's windows - no transfer fees spent - none of the 5 players SCP had lined up were signed and he was left with 5th choice frees and on top of that a few of his best performing players in lge 1 failed to make the step up - most notably BWP. Bowyer's squad was awful - lat minute free transfer and loan signings of unfit players and a failure to replace the 4 players who decided to leave. An injury crisis then led to him being forced to use ill equipped youngsters and Bonne!

More important to clarify when something is incorrect. If it’s not a Charlton -Reading issue, or a medical issue it must purely be down to money. Some people are happy to make decisions immediately, other prefer to take a bit longer. It doesn’t matter because it got resolved.Leeds_Addick said:

Considering how many games he's played the last few years I never believed it was because of a failed medicalIt was only a delay because people said it was 100% done when it was probably 99% done etc.1
