I'm frustrated that as fans we all knew the recipie for success in this division was winning the battle and earning the right to play your football, two games in and we have been out muscled twice. We have too learn and learn quick.
pardew has a proven record in getting sides to compete for promotion so i would imagine that he knows what is required.and who wants to go back to that cesspit called the premiership anyway? let's just enjoy this level of football while we are here.
I don't really agree with this outmuscling theory. There were periods when we were passing the ball around and they were like statues. It doesn't matter how big your bloody muscles are - if you can't get near the man or the ball then you can't use them.
Another point is the referee. Once or twice we were in the middle of a good passing move and we got 'outmuscled.' They weren't really fouls but it looked so clumsy compared to what we were doing that the ref gave us a free-kick. We've got to play on this, especially at home. The home fans have got to shout for free-kicks aswell. I'm sure we've got a team that are going to completely outplay some teams once they've gelled. But we have to give them time and get behind them.
All this 'outmuscling' stuff and 'it's a physical league' talk is dangerous. Why should we play down to their level?
If we stick to our principles then we will win through in the end. But I do think that we have got to get the ball into the box quicker and run more with the ball once in there (as Golfie said).
After a nights sleep we did play really well in patches and not protected by the ref. Cant understand the attacks on Magic I think he has done well over the three games he was not a fault at any of the 3 goals conceded this season. Bent not marking the Scunthorope centre back, and Mccarthy yesterday was at fault for both goals.
Cannot understand why Sam was taken off as he was our main threat.
Big Chris did really well yesterday and does look a threat in this league. Hopefully Moutilkil will be fit but I doubt it.
Can anyone confirm whether McCarthy actually beeps when he turns around?
We need to do some work on the training ground about defending set pieces we're dire at it. And clubs in this division are going to love sticking it in the mixer against us.
I only saw the second half, complete with Thai commentary. How the commentators recognised the players from the studio here when I didn't I don't know.
Anyway, I thought that we looked the much more skilful side and I was also pssed off with McCarthy's efforts leading to the two Stoke goals. We were told he was a no nonsense defender, I recollect, but that's not what I saw yesterday.
I hope we can 'play' our way out of the division but it will take a few games for everything to gel. We don't have the right characters for the physical game so we have no option other than to give it a go. And I know there are exceptions such as Thatcher and Zheng Zhi but not many of the others as far as I know.
The problem with the 'give it time' theory:
- McCarthy won't ever become a better player
- Weaver will still flap at the ball instead of catching it
- Andy Reid is not going to become right-footed
- We'll keep conceding soft goals wihin minutes of scoring
- And finally, I don't see how 'time' is going to suddely change this over-hyped bunch into true chasers of a game when behind - our performance in the last 15 mins was ABYSMAL. A big hangover still from last season, and Pards seems to be suffering from it as much as the rest of them.

Promotion will not be decided before the end of August.
We've had two league games, one in the cup and our record standards at won one, drawn one, lost one.
Not brilliant, but not a disaster either. Pards is putting together a footballing team and recreating a club, these things take time. Maybe it's me but I'm getting the impression that because we've been a Premiership club that we are expected to walk away with this division. Maybe a bit of reality is good and we should realise that although the skill level is lower the commitment level is high and that nothing will be given to us.
Let's see how things are when Zheng Zhi comes into the team, and Thomas starts.

McCarthy might be out of his depth but we have other options at CB.
True Andy Reid won't become right footed, but we need someone alongside him to fight a bit and complement what he offers, we have Racon, ZZ, Holland (when fit) plus Sinclair to compete for midfield positions. A successful side is about balance as much as anything.
Conceding soft goals just after scoring is about concentration and not relaxing, not technique.
I'm not sensing you've answered those points with much confidence, BFR! Unfortunately we don't have many options at CB unless Gibbs makes a miraculous recovery. Any solutions to the last one?
(All suggestions welcome - I really don't enjoy being this negative!!)

Over-hyped? By who? Why has everyone got this idea that we're automatically brilliant? So the bookies made us favourites but did you really agree with them?
We've approximately sold £20 million and bought £5 million of players.
I predicted 6th at the start of the season and I still haven't seen much to change my mind.

I agree here. We do need 1 or 2 new CB's. Forget Gibbs - he doesn't exist.
It's funny, the huge expectation here. Most of us have supported Charlton for many years and, in a way, seen it all.
It's very early days - this year in the Prem, do people realistically expect Man City to be Champions, Wigan secure a Champions League place and Man Utd to struggle in a relegation fight?
Even in the CCC, more often than not, the team that starts at 100mph and has a blinding start to the season end up losing their way. And teams that start slowly, gradually make progress and climb from outside the play off positions.
In both of our 2 recent promotion seasons, we weren't exactly setting the Division on fire before Christmas, but later good runs eventually saw us do the business.
Even before the season started, many on here were saying that because it was a new team, supporters need to give it 10 games or so before passing realistic judgement. So why now the knee jerk reaction to a draw and a narrow defeat?
Every team in the Division, including the teams which will eventually gain promotion, will experience poor runs - whether now at the beginning of the season, mid-season or in the last tense stages.
So what? It's all part of the unpredictable game of football.

well i fancy derby, bolton and birmingham to struggle.
Good post Oggy, I really think that people are jumping the gun here. Ok we got done away from home and we haven't started the season smashing teams 5-0, but it's a marathon not a sprint.
I think the most worrying thing from yesterdays game by a mile was Moo2Kills injury.
Let's all just take one game at a time - watch it, take the glory or the pain, and talk about it after.
We can enjoy our football, and even with a few blips and disappointments - same as all the other teams - I firmly believe we are in for a cracking season and a bit of a goal fest, whether we win promotion or not.
Been away for the weekend and just logged on here to a tide of ridiculous negativity. I have just seen the game and while it was disappointing to lose the fact is that Stoke are a decent side with a lot of experienced players and they will be right up there at the end of the season. We have just turned over 70% of the playing staff so it is going to take time to settle down, maybe 10-12 games even but this is a very, very long season there are still FOURTY FOUR games to be played so you can recover from a poor start. We are also missing three players in Thomas, Holland and Varney who would all be in our strongest side. We should try and keep this stumble in decent perspective!!!

Thomas played the second half and we were still shyte...agree with NorthStandSteve and thinks Pards has bought a couple of donkeys...McCleod was awful....hope I am wrong
is macarthy a worse signing than djimi traore ... i blame curbs and dowie ..it's all his fault he was never real charlton like pardew is....look on the positive side, if we go down we'll have more new grounds to visit, we''ll probably win more games and we'll be further away from that dirty league the premiership and us 'REAL' charlton fans all 5k of us will be so proud we're playing at millwalls level...saturday was a pleasant change from the BORING years of curbs , it was soooo exciting and the team haven't had a chance to gel yet... 9 league games without a win is nothing to worry about cos we didn't really wanna win any of them premiership games cos that's not real football... it's all curbs fault he should've left 5 years ago and we could have established ourselves as a proper league one side with real supporters following the club ;-(
