I've read Jones's comments & they don't address the real issue. We just dont play with players who can create anything. Be that wingers or creative midfielders. It doesn't matter if the opposition score from 18 yards (not 20 or 25 as Jones mentions- the player was on the edge on the EIGHTEEN YARD LINE) if all we are going to do to try to score is pump aimless diagonal balls to a forward playing out wide.
I say it time & time again......coaching badges are worth shite.4 -
lancashire lad said:What's wrong with Leaburn, guess one of the following:
1: not match fit
2: carrying an injury
3: fed up with playing in a crap team
4: has lined up a move and doesn't want to get injured
I reckon 4 with a bit of 3
I'd be disappointed if that was the case after he was looked after with the injury. However, football is all about money and he needs to look after his bank balance.

I make it that in our 104 year history as a professional football club, there have been just five other occasions when we have failed to score three goals in any of our first 17 league matches. The first time that happened was during our second season in the football league in 1922-23 and on the other four occasions we finished 20/22 (2nd tier), 17/21 (1st tier), 19/20 (1st tier & relegated) and 18/24 (2nd tier). So, apart from that second season in Division 3 South we've never done that in the third tier of English football. We've also failed to win a game this season in which the opposition has scored, something that was only repeated in two of those five years after 17 matches.
I said recently on the Nathan Jones thread that he changed at Stoke from a style that caused Luton to score with regularity to one where not conceding was the most important thing. We aren't good enough to do that and the football, especially with our limited game changers, isn't going to take us on a run. If he is still with us come January then he has to change style and sign a couple of play makers in that window or, at best, we are going to be just above the relegation zone.6 -

This whole club is in serious need of some fresh ideas
Sadly mistaken, once a nice fat contract is waived in the face then people will come,

Those who run the club, fuck off.
I would bet my life somebody somewhere decided that is what we should do, and told poor old Brian Cole to do it. I could tell BC hated it as much as the rest of us, well those of us not half timing for a piss or a pie, and I would also bet that whoever made the decision wasn't even out of the boardroom to see it anyway.
I am sorry Kevin. As a long time fan I dearly wanted the chance to pay a decent tribute to you at the Valley, if not today then soon. I even expected black armbands on the players today.
I don't suppose a long time fan of Oxford United gives much of a damn about our club.
One thing that is worrying & I cant say too much as I'll get people in trouble but just check out the songs the players chose in the matchday programme.1 -
seth plum said:Will it cost a lot of money to sack Jones?
The club backed him in the summer & it's been a mitigated disaster. Sold the leagues top goalscorer & then brought in a load of duds. Then plays a wingback system with players who cant beat a man nor cross the ball. No width & no creativity. Enough enough. We tried it your way Nathan & its clearly not only not working but the actual football is unbearable to watch. Time for a different style & direction. Resign if you cant deal with it.7 -
I said this earlier…in the warm up they practice one-twos and passing. Once the ref blows his whistle to start the match we switch to hoof ball. Unbelievable!
It’s been an embarrassment this season. Somehow I don’t blame the players. The blame lies solely with NJ and his tactics.7 -

As you know there is a name for our ever growing stat of not winning once we concede first. Perhaps @Addick Addict you wouldn't mind finding the actual numbers on this. I think we managed once last season & once the season before. By my estimation it's around 3 times in 100 games that we can win a game of football if we concede first.
What is even more startling is the commentator tonight said that out of our 11 wins this season 9 have been by us keeping a clean sheet. No idea if that's true but if it is then the above two issues make things very clear.
If we dont concede we almost usually win.
If we concede first we hardly ever win.
And then there is the number of times we dont score in the first half of games. And tied to that the amount of times we go in at half time losing.
Forget XG.........just score the first goal ffs !4 - Sponsored links:

Fleetwood 2-1
Exeter 4-1
Cheltenham 2-1
Derby 2-1
Carlisle 3-2
In the league all our 6 wins this season have been without conceding and we have won 9 out of 11 in all comps without doing so. The two exceptions were the 2-1 in the Football League Trophy when we were 2-0 up at one point and the 4-3 Cup win (after AET) during which we were never behind at any point. So 11 wins have been when we've taken the lead although we have come from behind on 4 occasions to draw matches.2 -
It's just truly depressing being a Charlton supporter, so much so, that it is getting to a point where I cannot remember better times, or a least "average, all do your job, get the odd cracking result times".
As I lay here sleepless and heavy with cold, my thoughts turn again to the question, "what is the fucking point?"
Apart from the three Creepy Crawley sauntered off with, without breaking sweat yesterday evening.2 -
Not much to add, that was atrocious football.
The Jones way is fine for getting out of a relegation scrap or a tough away fixture but, to base your entire play style and squad build for that was only ever going to go one way, I could take it if winning and showing signs of progression but we dont even get that.
We have some players that we're definitely not getting the best out of, genuinely think it's time for a change, nothing drastic, would put Flemming in charge for the remainder of the season and monitor Elliott/ a few others and plan for the summer.
Back to the game, Crawley looked better than us, yes they may have not had much of the ball or chances but when they did, looked like a team.
Alan Campbell was busy and covered a lot of ground sadly he's usually 5 minutes behind the ball and chasing shadows.
Just finish the season already.4 -
We won’t go down because Crawley were utter crap , that says everything about how much of a shithouse team we were last night.
That shot from the bloke from Crawley just near the edge of the box when it had been blocked a couple of times that went towards the edge of the box looked like he’d never kicked a ball in his life, ridiculous.
We are so dull and crap .
Ive got a season ticket and have only been to one home game , I do everything to get out of it but I still am somehow drawn to watch the shit on a stream or tv probably only missed a couple of league games .
It’s so sad what a joke we have become .
was that one of the lowest home turn outs (that’s what I’m doing now, hit the chocolate hard) for a league fixture since we returned to The Valley .
Sad times and the current clown of a manager must be running out of support even from the rose tinted among us .4 -
That performance last night is what I long for in the football league trophy .7
-
Shameful. At least under Apples they tried to play football (OK, they were bad at it, but at least they tried). This is utterly devoid of any idea other than give it a thump upfield and hope someone gets their head to it.3

Last night after going 2-1 down we brought on.............2 defenders.19 -
Utterly dire. A year ago I'd have watched the post match with Curbs and Minto, but even that is gone. The team Jones has assembled look like some sort of bargain bucket where you get 10 anonymous footballers for the price of 1, but when you open the package, you find you've got 9 identical league 2 journeymen, plus Aneke.
I won't be renewing the club stream package next year. If the club don't care, I won't watch.
And what the fuck;happened to Leaburn? Anyone else turn in that performance and we'd be demanding he get moved on.
All in all, rotten night and my celebration whiskey when Kanu scored (great goal) turned into a hangover today.
Fuck off Jones.7 - Sponsored links:

I had a choice on TV between Charlton and Rees-Mogg.
I have to say, it was an excellent performance.2 -
What is the point of us ..we just make
up the numbers. Completely lost all interest

bromleyjohn said:It’s difficult to know what Jones could have done possibly play two extra strikers from beginning because there was no threat/attack from midfield at all. It’s all a bit of a mess as they recruited some crap players last summer and having to stick with them. They will have to spend on one decent attacking midfielder as we do not have one. Crawley played us off the park.well done Crawley.
You are having a laugh Nathan at our expense0 -
CAFCTrev said:I think Jones probably has some credit in the bank in the eyes of the SMT after the cup wins and Burton away, so I dont he will get sacked before our next couple of games. Fail to win any of the remaining games in December though and surely he will be gone by new year.4

I enjoyed a couple of things in that game.
Both performances were in the Crawley team
Joe Woollacott- how his passing out set the pattern of play for his team.
Also Camara- a fairly quiet but efficient midfield role.
Some posters have criticised the effort of the team- I think this is totally unfair. The effort was there but misdirected, it was tactics and talent that was missing.13 -
Jones has to go.
Those saying what will that achieve I ask one question.
What is Nathan Jones giving us that any manager in this league wouldn't? What sets him apart? Why settle for second best?
He sold our one and only goal threat from last season and seemingly bragged about it after beating a team a division below in the cup
He committed to a formation in the summer which he now doesn't play and only left us with one first team winger
The only game where I've thought yeah he got that spot on was the Birmingham game. Then he proceeded to use that formation come what may even when it wasn't working
17 league games in and I don't believe he knows his best midfield or even his best team
He must know that if he mucks this up he'll be on the managerial scrap heap for a while as that's two jobs in a row he's messed up.
We need to find someone that wants to play football. NJ is basing our whole game plan on percentages. Hit it long get a flick on and 1 out of 5 will land to a forward to score. That is ancient football. We instantly look better with people out wide but he never starts them. Clueless or stubborn? Either way I've had enough. I wouldn't mind loosing if we played well I think the majority of us are the same

Rock Spectacle said:Rob Elliot seems a young and hungry manager. It's now becoming like Groundhog Day, start OK, goes downhill, sack manager. I would hate to think how much we have spent on getting rid of Adkins, Garner, Holden and Appleton so God forbid what it would cost to get rid of the present incumbent with a 4 year deal. Said all along that if we get the Luton Jones, fine, if we get the Stoke/Soton version may be a wee bit different. There are so many people that could and should be held accountable for the current malaise, as the slippery slide descends again. Jones got us out of a mess last season, don't lose first, win a bonus but that has continued into this season. The table doesn't lie, reflects where we are now. No further forward. Jones will be the initial fall guy, but somehow there are people that remain in post despite the monumental porridge that was Dobson's contract and the stage managed exit of May. If only we knew who actually who makes decisions at the top level. This is now painful. 08:06 to Lincoln from Kings Cross on Saturday morning...
Fans of all ages deserve more respect from the SMT and owners.
Just have a beer or two mate, I be with you in thought.👍0 -
For me it all goes back to ownership. Until we get owners who are prepared to invest the funds required to purchase the Valley and SL from Roland, we are likely to attract half-hearted groups of investors who would otherwise be priced out of purchasing a club the size of Charlton. Don't get me wrong, they can scrape the funds together to keep us going, but they baulk at the prospect of the type of investment it would require to break this relentless cycle of decline. Time for the big-time Charlies to admit they are out of their depth.4

Croydon said:Their second goal just perfectly demonstrated how little our players are arsed. 17 odd passes and we didn't get near them. We let someone run 30 yards untouched, watch him play an underhit cross field pass, then stand off the man and allow him to shoot before finally not closing down the rebound.
Every single one of them can fuck off as far as I'm concerned. Jones is a big problem but these players are properly shit.
Spot on exactly what I said at the time,Godden pressed the ball on the edge of their box, where was the back up press, 30 fuckin yards behind him, what a absolute mess of a club, the players who do not have clue what system they are playing a Manager, who is living in Dave Bassett and Jackie Charlton's era. Never felt so uninterested in my life with this shower of shit.
