I'm sure someone far cleverer than me will be able to explain this , but wasn't this the last window clubs could seriously spend before the new SCMP rules come in next season that affects how much clubs can spend even more???? I know Charlie was very much a proponent of them but I can't remember what the exact changes were?
Under new rules sides will only be able to spend a proportion of any investment over £500,000.
Owners in League One putting £1m or more into a club will only be able to spend 60% on player-related expenditure while League Two sides will only be permitted to spend 50%.
It means that should an owner of a League One side invest £100m in their club they could only spend just over £60m on players.
Owners can still spend an unlimited amount of money in non-player related costs such as infrastructure improvements or community projects.

Before the change, if they put in £500k all of it could go on player wages.
Cheers! That explains it quite nicely. Will be interesting to see how it all pans out and if it might readjust the transfer market a bit in terms of fees.
Letting Zach and REG go is a big risk and I think we are midfielder and wide player short.Hope I am wrong. I wonder if there is an unfit, out of contract winger hanging around?
There might be a few players that had their contracts mutually terminated yesterday because their clubs couldn’t find them moves. Hopefully we can pick up a gem like we did Thierry Small this time last year
I'm looking forward to seeing what Gilbert can do, but McIntyre looks to be a poor signing to me. Overall a disappointing window that has left us short. Missed opportunity.

An unfit out of contract winger would surely be more ready than Kaheim Dixon. Lua-Lua, now he was the readiest I've seen
Can't help but feel like a bit of a missed opportunity. Yes we've addressed positions of need and not managed to shoot ourselves in the foot and sold a key player at 10:55pm but I can't help but feel a bit meh about it all.
Edge of the playoffs and not pushing the boat out for some real difference makers feels like a missed opportunity. The Sunderland lad that didn't get completed stats wise just looks like another Dixon so was clearly a last minute flyer on who could be available.
Would have liked cover for Coventry and a winger/forward because I'm worried that style wise if we lost Cov or TC for any amount of time the current style of play wouldn't work as well.
The funny thing is we had cover for Coventry, his name is Terry Taylor and he's played every minute for Northampton so far.
I could understand when we first shipped him as I was under the impression we would replace him. Now we haven't it leaves a massive question mark. We have no natural successor for Docherty or Coventry if they can't play.
Terry Taylor could play a role and showed he had something to offer with his minimal opportunities.
I look forward to reading their bullshit summary on how it all went down. I don't believe for one second Nathan Jones is happy with this transfer window. Comes across like a case of not biting the hand that feeds.
I was fine with TT going and playing regularly at Northampton because I wrongly assumed that , yeah TT goes and gets games and we'll bring someone else in that is maybe a better fit for what NJ wants. Instead we're left with a concern that when Coventry inevitably gets suspended or gets a knock that whole midfield shape just won't work.
Madness to assume that him and Doc are going to get through the rest of the season unscathed.
Why trim the squad when you’re going for promotion? Makes sense to keep Taylor and Reg at least, particularly if you’re not going to spend any money on new recruits.
Don't get the hang up about wingers? Rightly or wrongly, It's clear that Jones really doesn't use them. TC for me is a classic Newton type winger but Jones never plays him in that role. The only real width comes from his wing backs and when even they get out in the attacking 3rd is few and far between. So for me, in Small, Edwards,Ramsay and Watson we're pretty well stocked.

Berry has played the 8 and looks as though Gilbert can play all three, 6,8 and 10
I've seen Steve Brown play in goal, Phil Chappell up front & Chris Solly as a RB.....but you wouldn't want to do that more than once 😱.
Edit.
Ok.....Brownie was ok in goal & never let a goal in I believe but hey, he was no Dean Kiely.

So have I . But I think Gilbert is more than competent in the 6

No matter which way you cut it, we haven't added pace or attacking threat, something that's been missing since the first game of the season. We continue to be solely reliant on TC and Small.
I think we are 2 players short. A pacy attacker and another central midfielder that can play a deeper role. Just got to hope for some luck with injuries
Makes letting Taylor go when we did all the more baffling.
Regardless of whether we missed our primary target and went for the Sunderland kid, why did we leave it all so bloody late?
Why go for the Sunderland kid at all, surely we have kids in the under 23’s as good, if not better?
Because we managed to get REG out I guess, budget! I think this window gives us more of an insight into what is going on. Charlie has obviously sold to the owners a budget that will get us promoted and it doesn't look like it's going to change IMO. Fingers crossed it works...
Going to be an interesting window this summer if we don't get promoted.
Can they just let us know who they're trying to sign now please?
I dont care if it doesnt go ahead or not... I mean it doesnt matter if its not a secret, as no other club can sneak in and sign him
I honestly doubt we have much competition for the players we are in for.
Unless their recruitment team also have a fetish for crocked and bit part players.
Let's face it, we can't compete with championship clubs or top end league one clubs for money or status. With league one we are probably top 6 on choice. Let's face it, we cleared out some of our unwanted players, and we signed 2 unwanted players for a couple of months.
January window has been more about not selling our jewels. Is that showing ambition?
Mate, we have a top4 budget by their own admission. We have also been told of their wealth and their ambition to get this club promoted.
I don't believe hanging on to players is ambitious, as they're under contract. Signing Lloyd Jones was a massive positive, fair play. But respectfully, as a Charlton fan, I have much higher hopes than us competing with Wycombe for the signature of a player already on our books.
I don't care about any players that left, they're all pants (excluding Terry Taylor), fair play for managing to get rid. That still doesn't change the fact those are all signings sanctioned by the same board.
Let's see who this last player is anyway, could change the field.
They do have
Personally I'm glad the owners are not being stupid and throwing money at it because it's not necessarily guaranteed to get you promoted, if they go steady enough and we get top 10 this year that's an achievement on last year then we can aim for promotion next year when Birmingham and likely Wrexham or Huddersfield will be gone, if we happen to get play offs this season that's a massive added bonus.
Sorry but that's a load of tosh. This season is the first in the last 3 that we've actually got a change of the play offs. What's the point of wasting that chance because Birmingham & Wrexham are in the division. What happens next season when Luton & Stoke are in it instead ? Wait another season ? Strike while the iron is hot. But no, let’s just be happy that we'll finish 10th so an improvement on last season.
That’s all great but no-one’s actually explained why that means anything like what you’ve said it means. Still waiting for the club statement that says we’re packing up for the year.
Last time we got promoted out of this division we replaced Karlan Grant with Josh Parker - and our results actually improved.
”Strike while the iron is hot … don’t waste a chance of top six” = “satisfy my whiny desires for today and sod whether it makes sense tomorrow”
2+2=5 ? That improvement was nothing to do with Josh Parker. He played 10 games and made no impression in 9 of them and half decent in the final.(Winning that free kick )He scored Zero goals. Karlan Grant would've ripped up League 1 over the last 4 months as Cullen, Bielik, and Aribo all kept improving as the season progressed. Bielik was getting scores of 5 in the 1st part of that season when he struggled at 1st at CB before having some excellent games in midfield and was sublime in the two 4-0 wins towards the business end when he scored a cracker. Other than the Final, Sarr was much better in the 2nd part of that play off winning season and Purrington and Dijksteel were both steady and strong as the season progressed.
Grant and Taylor would've both scored over 20, plus assists and I will go to my grave believing we would have grabbed the automatic last spot. Our only striker was Lyle Taylor baby on his own before he became persona non grata. Both young Davison and Parker were far short of being League 1 strikers. Honest players but poor at that level.
That argument I have heard before and as some one who saw many games that Parker played including that bad miss in front of the Covered end he was an honest but 2nd rate footballer who was Steve Gallen's 6th choice on his list of 5 !
If anyone believes that Josh Parker was anywhere near the player that Grant was then Football analysis isn't for you.
Callum, I like your optimism when the grumpy old men are in full swing but that statement in bold hides so many things I saw at the time.
Don't get the hang up about wingers? Rightly or wrongly, It's clear that Jones really doesn't use them. TC for me is a classic Newton type winger but Jones never plays him in that role. The only real width comes from his wing backs and when even they get out in the attacking 3rd is few and far between. So for me, in Small, Edwards,Ramsay and Watson were pretty well stocked.
The hang up is about not having another player with pace and dribbling ability so we can sub and rotate TC or Small.
TC drifts to the left, Small pushes high and the formation moves from 5-3-2 in defence to 4-2-3-1 in attack.
We won’t be the same team if we lose the pace and skill Small and TC bring, as we saw vs Blackpool when TC was taken off.
The Sunderland winger would have given us that option, so the club know it was a gap we needed to fill. Now we’re reliant on u21s or free agents.
Keeping Small, Jones, TC, Leaburn and our other key players is a real positive.
I don't have a particular issue with moving on any of those players whom have left.
But I can't help thinking our squad is very small and even the smallest of injury crisis would have the ability to completely derail our season.
Hopefully the 2 new lads are real quality and improve the 11.
Something felt like it went wrong, given NJ is repeatedly on record saying we don't like loans, he even doubled down on it after the Boro lad was announced, yet our only 2 incomings are loans. We then seem to have been left floundering for a winger last second and missed out on another loan.
I don’t think the squads any worse than before the window, and I think Gilbert will be a good addition, I just don’t think we’ve utilised it to the best we could have. Seems an opportunity missed considering our position and form.
The saving grace could be that this league is absolute shite, so our best 11 might just be good enough.
Wouldn't rule out getting a free agent winger if one becomes available, hopefully more of a Small signing than Lua Lua. I think getting Jones to sign a new deal and not selling Leaburn, Small or TC either is a sign of intent.
People keep saying we haven't replaced REG, we have with McIntyre. He himself has said he can play in midfield and Docherty's natural position is as a 6 so there's your Coventry cover. Z Mitchell on loan is a big show of faith in Josh Laq. GIlbert is an unknown quantity but at the very least will keep Berry on his toes as competition and means we have a like for like replacement on the bench rather than throwing Anderson on.
Totally get why it seems a bit underwhelming but we haven't lost anyone key and we've got in new players in 2/3 (4 if you include GK) that all fans wanted and NJ gets the smaller squad he's said he wants.
I'll hold my hands up here - I have never heard of McIntyre or Gilbert. They could be world class for all I know.
But on the face of it moving out 4 players - Taylor, Zak Mitchell, Edun and E-G - who are perfectly competent at this level and replacing them with a young lad of limited experience and a defender who was injured for most of last season and hasn't played since November doesn't strike me on the face of it as great business.
Still at least we never sold Small, Campbell or Leaburn. Would be interesting to know if there were any serious bids for them.
Can they just let us know who they're trying to sign now please?

Just a few years ago, but memories fade so easily. Davison didn't sign until the Championship season. Meanwhile the analysis above completely overlooks Vetokele, who was showing signs of getting back to his best (he & Taylor combined brilliantly against Luton). Sadly, Igor just couldn't stay fit, and certainly having to rely on Parker as the back-up was a mistake we somehow got away with.
I'm not sure what I realistically hoped for this time round, other than clearing out the dead wood. Not sure I would have let both Zach and REG head out though. And hoping to see Dixon get a chance off the bench.

I wonder if he also tried to bring the Sunderland rookie in as our only possible wide attacking option and Jones told him to do one.
