Just watched the highlights, I thought the penalty decision was fine.

Taylor throws his arm up behind him, and in a very unnatural position as it blocks the ball.
Well I agree he’s got good vision,  but he’s literally got his back to the ball, how did he know to put that arm up?
Eyes in the back of his head, Prague.  B)
  • You can't blame Mannion for any of those
  • So who was taking a pen if we got there?

I’m guessing Godden, Ahadme, Hylton, Gillesphey and Docherty…

    Edwards strikes a nice ball
  • Hmm not in my location they're not. Where am I Papua New Guinea ? Timbuktu ? No exotic Greenwich & I can't watch  the BBC highlights  :/

I'm in Greenwich too, and can't watch.

  • Under the current laws of the game, it was more of a penalty than it wasn't. I don't think we can complain. For me, we seem to be a different team away from home. That is probably the biggest question Jones has to get into.

It was a classic banana skin game. We won. Our three fit strikers scored and, as a bonus, so did Zach. 9 goals in 8 days, so unlike Charlton in recent years, even with Alfie.. The unbeaten run in all competitions extended to 6 games and counting and hopefully one game closer to Jones coming back from injury. Onwards and upwards.
  • I’m more concerned that he drinks wine in bed
  • The defending by both teams is comical.

  • His hand couldn’t be in a more unnatural position.  How is it not a penalty , oh let’s just go in to a starfish position and make ourselves as big as possible and look the other way
From that still I agree it looks a penalty - But hadn't he stumbled and his arms were windmilling as he tried to keep his balance / get back up?

Difficult one for the referee regardless of the decision I think
  • I still think a flat 442 would work Powell style with TC on the left and maybe Terry Taylor on the right. Terry whipping in balls like becks to leaburn, Godden, Gas and Aneke.
  • Glad we got through but there are a few things that are positive and negative for me. The loss of Ramsay and Jones is having an impact right across the side, we have lost aggression, not only in the back four but in midfield as well, Steve Brown mentioned the loss of the art of defending yesterday, that first headed challenge anywhere on the pitch can dictate the next pattern of play and against Wrexham and Southend, too many players are not aggressive enough to win that battle. A lot of people are asking for a creative player to arrive in the transfer window, I'm not so sure that a 'Bakinson' type player would not be a bad thing either. Great goals from Leaburn and Ahadme and with three of the five strikers being fit it gives Jones a welcome problem, can he go with a front line of Ahadme, Leaburn and Godden ? I think Miles, in the past has played off the main striker and been very successful in that role. On to Exeter and hopefully an improvement because against Wrexham and Southend, I don't think the side defended well or dominated the middle at all.

Nailed on Pen IMO. The ref has to assume that he has made himself bigger, whether he is facing the ball or not.

I've watched that and then am commenting straight away without reading others' posts....

... listening to NJ, I  am heartened by the fact that - as in previous weeks - he really goes in strong on the fact that the team aren't performing to the standards he expects

I've read a fair few people on here saying that we arent good enough and that he is the wrong manager for us and/or he isn't doing a good job. Hopefully, those people see value in the fact that he isn't trying to make excuses or sugar coat. He knows it isn't good enough. Given time and support, I think he'll get us to the levels we aspire to.
Instead of continually talking about how the standards aren't up to what he expects why doesn't he do something about it?
  • Good luck for the rest of the season and the next round of the cup.

We gave you a proper game today and pushed you all the way.

Think leaburn was the difference. He looks a proper forward.

We can concentrate on getting out of the nightmare that is the national league.

    All the best

    You did well.  We didn't.

BTW what you are saying about the National League?  We've been saying that about L1 for a looong time.
It’s related to expectations. Southend would be happy in League One just as we would be satisfied to be in The Championship. Man Utd fans would consider The Championship to be a nightmare.

However, I am starting to think that League One really is the cesspit of cheating and timewasting. Kettering were winning by one goal against Northampton yesterday evening but the extra time was still entertaining at 2-1. Did anyone else think, like me, that, if that had been in League One, Kettering would have spent most of it going down holding their heads in agony or having a few goalkeeper injuries?
  • Just watched highlights and my conclusion is that our defence is fecking clueless.
Our midfield is non f*******g existent more like!

Bullied about again by a bunch of part timers this time.
And when you look to the bench it's much of the same.
How did Jones get this paramount part of the jigsaw so wrong??
    Part timers?
  • “We are in the lap of the Gods and praise the Lord, he was shining on us.”
  • As much as I like Godden he simply has to do better with that 1on 1 chance. No need to blast it. Just place it in the far corner.
Agree. It's the kind of chance that would have been taken by Alf.... ah forget it.
  • Didn't see any of it but the important thing is we won and our strikers scoring should give them confidence for a run of winnable games. A cliche but this was a real banana skin - this time last year we couldn't beat Cray Wanderers, a team way below Southend in the pyramid, at home!
